ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested on
NFL Live
that Christian Ponder will be in danger of losing his job this season if the Vikings begin to struggle.
"There are enough people around the league that believe Matt Cassel is good enough to challenge Ponder," stated Schefter, adding that Cassel "could unseat Ponder at some point this season." Although Schefter confirmed Ponder won't lose his job before Week 1, he called it a "situation that bears watching." Ponder endured a brutal nine-game stretch last season (Weeks 7-16) where he completed 140-of-245 passes (57.1 percent) for just 1,267 yards (5.17 YPA), and a 7:8 TD-to-INT ratio with two lost fumbles. Ponder was serviceable to solid (67.2 percent, 7.01 YPA, 11:4) in his other seven starts.

Christian Ponder says he's experienced no "aftereffects" from his late-season triceps injury, and is 100 percent.
Ponder underwent an MRI several weeks after the season after the injury "flared up," but is reportedly "throwing well" with "plenty of velocity" in OTAs. The injury won't be an excuse for a player who needs to prove he can threaten beyond the first level of the defense this season. Ponder has averaged pathetic 6.1 yards over his first 774 career attempts.

GM Rick Spielman gives Christian Ponder "just as much credit for getting us in the playoffs" as Adrian Peterson.
Spielman was referring specifically to Ponder's play when the Vikings won their final four games of the regular season. During that time, he completed 60.6 percent of his passes and threw just one interception, but averaged a mere 157.5 yards per game and totaled four passing scores. These comments are another case of Spielman trying to pump up Ponder's confidence. He's ready to ride or die with his 2011 No. 12 overall pick.

Vikings RE Jared Allen says Christian Ponder has to be "THE guy" this season.
"Adrian (Peterson) can carry this team so far; our defense can carry this team so far," Allen said. "You know, you look at teams that historically win championships, and they have consistent play from the quarterback position. I thought the last four games of the year (Ponder) did a great job. You should kind of have things down in your third year." Ponder is entering his third season out of Florida State, and he's averaged a pitiful 6.2 YPA on 774 passes.

Vikings WR Greg Childs (torn patellar tendons) is up to 225 pounds.
Childs is listed at 217 on the team's official website, but what makes it so much more impressive is that he had dipped all the way to 180 last winter. Childs was recovering from double patellar tendon tears, and the pain medicine made him sick to his stomach. He's now lifting "crazy weight, like lineman weight" as his recovery is ongoing. Childs could be medically cleared for the start of training camp, but any contributions in 2013 would be a surprise.
