Teammate Ray Rice expects Torrey Smith to step up in the absence of Anquan Boldin this season.
"I’ve seen Torrey Smith get scouted as a guy that just goes deep," Rice said. "That’s what the scouting report was: ‘Let’s defend the deep ball.’ But, then I’ve seen Torrey Smith run intermediate routes. I’ve seen Torrey Smith line up in the slot. That’s what you call a complete No. 1 receiver." Smith will be
counted on
to be a more complete player, but it remains to be seen if he has the chops to morph from a pure deep threat. Smith has high-end WR2 upside.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome says the team is counting on Torrey Smith to step up as a leader following the trade of Anquan Boldin.
The Ravens will also count on Smith to become a more complete player, running a wider arrange of routes and beating coverage more than taking it away. "Torrey Smith knows exactly what needs to be done now," Newsome said. "He had two years with Anquan. He’s been mentored by him." Smith was held under 50 receptions in 16 starts last year. The Ravens will need 60-plus out of him in 2013.

Torrey Smith caught two passes for 35 yards in Sunday night's Super Bowl XLVII win over the 49ers.
The Ravens did well to win the world title without Smith or Dennis Pitta (4-26-1) making a major impact in the passing game. Smith was targeted six times, but Joe Flacco missed him deep on most of them and Baltimore was forced to turn to Anquan Boldin and Jacoby Jones for big plays downfield. Smith, who just turned 23, finished each of his first two NFL seasons as the No. 23 fantasy receiver in standard scoring. Expect him to hover around the top 20 entering 2013 fantasy drafts.

Torrey Smith caught four passes for 69 yards in the Ravens' AFC title game win over the Patriots.
Smith didn't have quite the night he did against Denver, but still did a good job of stretching the seams and keeping New England's undermanned secondary occupied. Smith is going to be an X factor in Super Bowl XLVII. As Julio Jones and Roddy White showed Sunday afternoon, San Francisco's secondary is burnable.

Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta said the team is "very excited" about Jacoby Jones as a receiver this season.
"We're very excited about Jacoby and the progress he made throughout last season," DeCosta said. "We think we've got some very good young players that can step up and contribute. Deonte Thompson isn't a heralded name, but a guy we think is going to be a good player. We're excited about Tandon Doss. David Reed has had a lot of injuries. He's flashed in practice and made plays." Add Tommy Streeter to the list of young receivers who could see a bigger role in 2013. DeCosta also wouldn't rule out the Ravens signing a veteran receiver.

Ravens placed WR LaQuan Williams on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, ending his season.
A deep reserve, Williams appeared in just 11 games on special teams this season, and failed to play a snap on offense. The second-year undrafted free agent will have to claw for a roster spot in 2013.
