The Associated Press' Mark Long called Wednesday's OTAs session the "worst day of quarterback play I've witnessed at Jaguars practice in years."
Long's assessment comes one day after he observed Blaine Gabbert "(continuing) to struggle with short passes." In Gabbert's defense, the Jags are installing a new system, but the fact that he still can't even light up practice more than two years after being the No. 10 overall pick is a troubling sign. We'd suspect the Jags pull the plug on the Gabbert experiment early this season, with an eye toward finding his "successor" in the 2014 draft.

According to the Associated Press' Mark Long, Blaine Gabbert is struggling with short passes in OTAs.
Stop us if you've heard that one before. Jacksonville's starting quarterback job is still Gabbert's to lose, but only because the Jags came up empty in their search for competition beyond Chad Henne. If Gabbert plays anything like he did the past two seasons, Henne should lead the Jags in pass attempts for the second consecutive year.

According to Yahoo Sports, Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell plans to spend "much of the year" evaluating quarterbacks in the 2014 class, including Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater and Clemson's Tajh Boyd.
Per Yahoo's Jason Cole, the Jaguars were "privately" thrilled the Bills and Jets drafted quarterbacks in the first two rounds because that likely takes them out of the market for next year's top signal callers. Jacksonville and Cleveland are left as the likeliest quarterback-needy teams for 2014. The Jags will give Blaine Gabbert one more year to prove he's not a viable solution. (He will.)

GM David Caldwell reiterated Tuesday that the Jaguars are going to give Blaine Gabbert a "fair chance" to prove whether he's the "long-term solution" at quarterback.
The 24 games Gabbert has already started could constitute a "fair chance" in the modern NFL, but the Jags didn't come away with any better options this offseason. According to Yahoo's Jason Cole, Caldwell will spend "much of the season" evaluating the NCAA's top quarterbacks. Per Cole, the Jags were "only too happy" when the Bills and Jets used early-round picks on signal callers, presumably taking them out of the QB-running in 2014. Few players will be more on the spot than Gabbert this season.

Aaron's younger brother, Rodgers is competing with fellow undrafted QB Matt Scott for No. 3 duties. This gives the more-talented Scott another leg up in a competition the Jaguars would likely prefer him to win.

Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) said his goal is to resume full-scale workouts in the month ahead of training camp.
Jones-Drew didn't practice with the Jags during Monday's OTAs. Instead, he ran 30-yard dashes at three-quarters speed. "Lately, it's been one day on, a day off, two days on, a day off — it's part of the process," he said. "I'm closer than I think. I just want to take my time and make sure we do it the right way." Rehab from Lisfranc surgery is nothing to be brushed off lightly. We'll be watching MJD's progress closely as he enters a contract year.

Coach Gus Bradley said he's giving suspended WR Justin Blackmon a clean slate.
Blackmon has two DUI arrests and a four-game substance-abuse violation on his resume since 2010. But none of that occurred while Bradley was in contact with the 2012 No. 5 overall pick. The pair is having regular conversations as Blackmon tries to stabilize his life and career. "He's never done anything wrong with me. It'd be different if I was talking to him and I didn't feel like we were connecting at all. I do feel a connection," Bradley said.

During his first official practice with the Jaguars, Brackett sustained a serious knee injury. The pass-catching tight end will need to regain full speed and burst before he can hope for a 2013 roster spot. The Jags re-signed Colin Cloherty to take Brackett's roster spot.
