Cardinals RB Ryan Williams said he was "scared all last year to get the ball in my hands."
Williams was coming off a torn patella tendon. "I was trying to protect my leg instead of trying to protect the football," he admitted. "It's a scary sight being a running back and being scared to run the ball. That's something that no running back should feel." Williams averaged a pathetic 2.82 YPC before a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 5. He says the fear is now gone, but he'll have to prove in pads to earn carries. Rashard Mendenhall, Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington are all in the mix.

Coach Bruce Arians reiterated that the running back spot is open to competition.
Rashard Mendenhall may be the slight favorite as he had his best years under Arians in Pittsburgh and will be roughly 20 months removed from his ACL tear when Week 1 rolls around. But Ryan Williams, Stepfan Taylor and Andre Ellington will all be in the mix as well. "You really can't tell until the lights come on," Arians said. "Some were different from this morning's walkthrough to the afternoon practice. Until you turn the lights on, you really don't know about them."

New coach Bruce Arians said he prefers not to use a running back by committee approach.
"Backs by committee, one of them gets hurt you've lost half your committee or a third of your committee," Arians said. "I like guys who can play every down." Ryan Williams is the logical in-house candidate, but he'll have to prove his ever-questionable health. The Cardinals are also a good bet to add talent via free agency or the draft. They've been linked to Rashard Mendenhall and Reggie Bush, among others.

Cardinals GM Steve Keim says the club is "expecting big things" from third-year RB Ryan Williams.
Williams has been injured since his redshirt freshman season at Virginia Tech, but the Cards aren't giving up. "We watched him against Philadelphia ... (and) New England," Keim said of Williams' 2012 tape. "His lateral quickness, his natural run skills, his avoidability is something he brings to the table. Plus he’s a three-down back. We’re expecting big things out of Ryan moving forward."

Cardinals sixth-round WR Ryan Swope (concussion symptoms) has still been unable to practice.
Swope might have been a Day 2 draft pick if he hadn't sustained "at least" four concussions while at Texas A&M. His inability to even suit up for these non-padded, non-contact practices is disconcerting. The Cardinals may have to stash Swope on injured reserve this season, giving him time to get full clearance from the medical staff. The college football season ended six months ago.

Cardinals TE Jeff King is recovering from knee surgery, but could be ready to resume practicing by early June.
The blocking tight end is sitting out OTAs, but sounds like he'll be ready for training camp. He's likely recovering from a scope. A seven-year veteran, King graded out as the third-worst tight end in the league in Pro Football Focus' ratings last season.
