Eagles LB Casey Matthews sustained a concussion during Sunday's Week 17 game against the Giants.
Matthews was seeing snaps with the first-team defense thanks to Mychal Kendricks' Week 16 concussion. But in every other game this year, Clay's brother been a mere special teamer en route to 11 tackles and no sacks. Casey will be fighting for a roster spot under a new coaching regime in 2013.

Eagles LB Casey Matthews has missed the last two preseason games with a high-ankle sprain.
"I'm almost there, there's just a little stiffness in it, they're just trying to get that out," said Matthews. "I should be ready by Week 1." Lining up behind DeMeco Ryans as the second-team middle linebacker, Matthews was having a strong camp before the injury.

Eagles LB Casey Matthews indicated that he now weighs in at 250 pounds, up 18 pounds from last year's listed weight.
Beat writers noted that Matthews looked "huge" at workouts a few weeks ago. The added bulk should help Matthews in the run game, where he was too often washed out as a rookie. As the team's primary nickel backer down the stretch, though, the extra bulk could slow him in coverage. Matthews still projects as a situational player for 2012.

Matthews was overmatched in the middle, which came as no surprise to anyone who watched the Eagles in preseason action. They are the NFL's 30th-ranked run defense through two weeks. Jamar Chaney and Brian Rolle are expected to continue to hold down nickel-backer duties.

Eagles TE/H-back James Casey underwent arthroscopic surgery to clean out loose cartilage in his right knee.
Casey, who signed a three-year, $12M contract in March, will miss the rest of spring workouts. He is expected to be ready for training camp. It's a setback for a player trying to learn Chip Kelly's offense and competing for snaps with both Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz. Casey was barely on the TE2 radar anyway.
