James Brewer is expected to compete for the Giants' starting right tackle job next season.
With David Diehl likely to be released and Will Beatty set to become a free agent, Brewer will be in the mix for a starting role. He appeared in just eight games over his first two seasons, but is a bit of an athletic freak as a former high school basketball star who goes 6-foot-6, 320 with nearly 36-inch arms.

Brewer ''redshirted'' his rookie season, but has the size to develop into a starting right tackle. Moving veteran David Diehl from his natural guard position is also an option. Former Colts' castoff Tony Ugoh could be brought back to provide insurance.

The Giants have no plans to use No. 117 overall pick James Brewer as a rookie, according to scouting director Marc Ross.
Brewer was a fourth-round value, but the G-Men view him as a project. "He will come in and learn and develop and won’t get thrown into the fire," Ross said. "It’s a perfect situation for him." Brewer is a size-athleticism freak, but didn't begin playing football until his senior year in high school. In five years at Indiana -- including a redshirt -- he only started 21 games.

Rodger Saffold's bookend in Bloomington, Brewer is a former basketball player at 6-foot-6, 323 with ridiculous 35 3/8-inch arms. A favorite of ex-scout Dave Razzano and NFL Network's Mike Mayock, Brewer is a high-upside developmental project for OL coach Pat Flaherty. We like the value here.

Hakeem Nicks isn't commenting on contract talks.
"I don't really negotiate my contract in the media," said Nicks. "Let my agent do that. I just play football." The 2009 first-round pick is entering a contract year. The Giants are highly unlikely to let Nicks walk, but his history of leg injuries could compel them to adopt a deliberate pace in talks. Nicks would be a strong candidate for the franchise tag if no long-term deal is reached.
