Lions agreed to terms with K David Akers, formerly of the 49ers.
Whereas old Lions kicker Jason Hanson converted 89 percent of his 2012 field-goal tries, replacement Akers managed a 69-percent conversion rate. The Lions will hope Akers' woeful season was due wholly to a pelvis injury that plagued him all year. Akers, 38, underwent surgery on the pelvis in early March.

Free agent K David Akers left his Lions visit without a contract.
It's a sign the Lions are still hoping to re-sign Jason Hanson. Coming off a rough season in San Francisco, Akers has yet to line up any other visits.

The Lions will host K David Akers for a free-agent visit next week.
Perhaps Detroit is using the Akers visit to put pressure on fellow free agent Jason Hanson, whom the Lions would prefer to re-sign. Hanson went 32-of-36 (89 percent) on field goals last year. Akers went 29 for 42 (69 percent).

Free agent K David Akers has "no intention" of retiring, and recently underwent a "minor surgical procedure" to correct an issue that bothered him in 2012.
Akers dealt with a vague "pelvis" injury last season, but didn't miss any games. He'll surely blame his rough year on the ailment in free agency. Akers underwent a double sports hernia operation in February 2012.

Mikel Leshoure is being held out of team drills at Lions OTAs with an undisclosed injury.
"He's battling some stuff," coach Jim Schwartz said. "He can do some individual stuff but he's not ready to do any team work." There are no indications that the injury is serious, but it's worrisome news for a player who's had trouble staying healthy since being drafted. Leshoure can ill-afford more leg ailments after plodding through 2012. For now, Leshoure remains penciled in as the Lions' short-yardage "specialist" despite last season's anemic 3.71 yards per carry.

MLive.com considers Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate this season.
Broyles is recovering from a torn right ACL, and the Lions' only notable offseason receiver addition was sixth-round pick Corey Fuller. They must feel comfortable with Broyles' progress. In a six-game stretch last season, Broyles caught 21 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Broyles is questionable for Week 1, but once he's back he'll have a ton of potential in the Lions' high-powered attack while working opposite Megatron.
