Cowboys FS Matt Johnson blames his weightlifting regimen for his recurring hamstring woes as a rookie.
Johnson said he was squatting too much in the gym, and he has since focused on doing more hamstring workouts. "When you get to the pros, and playing at safety, I don’t need to squat 500 pounds," Johnson said. "We did more position specific and more dynamic work." Johnson says he's lost a couple pounds since last season and feels more comfortable. He's competing for a starting job.

Second-year S Matt Johnson is penciled in as the Cowboys' starting free safety.
Johnson missed his entire rookie season with a hamstring injury, but the Cowboys remain very high on him. "I don’t know when I’ve ever seen a player impress our staff without having played in a ballgame any more than Matt Johnson," owner/GM Jerry Jones said. Barry Church, who tore his Achilles' in Week 3, would be the other starting safety if the season started today.

ESPN Dallas still believes the Cowboys want Matt Johnson to win the starting free safety job.
Although Johnson missed his entire rookie year with recurring hamstring woes, the Cowboys remain high on him. They are bringing Will Allen in to compete, but he'll ideally be the third safety and play on special teams.

Executive VP Stephen Jones says the Cowboys remain high on 2012 fourth-round safety Matt Johnson.
"We like him a lot," Jones said. "But does Matt finally get rid of some of the hamstring issues? He never had them in college." Johnson missed his entire rookie season with recurring hamstring woes. Jones says he's in the mix for the starting strong safety job at the moment.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Tony Romo (back surgery) "probably" won't be ready for minicamp.
Romo said earlier Tuesday he was optimistic he'd be ready for June's minicamp, but Rapoport reports the Cowboys are "fine bringing Romo back slowly." They have no reason to rush their franchise signal caller, who should be ready well before training camp.

Cowboys signed fifth-round RB Joseph Randle to a four-year contract.
The Cowboys have very high hopes for Randle, despite the fact that he'll miss all pre-training camp activities due to offseason thumb surgery. An adept pass catcher, Randle does little else well. On tape, it was evident his production was spiked by Oklahoma State's wide-open offense in the defense-deficient Big 12.

"It won't keep him out of training camp, but will limit him during (offseason) training," owner/GM Jerry Jones said. With a $1.2 million base salary, Vickers is squarely on the roster bubble.

Dez Bryant says he's "found (himself)," and is "comfortable" with his life.
"I wish it could've been a couple years back, but I had to go through a couple of things to figure it out," Bryant said of his past troubles. "I think I got it and I'm just more focused on my job and doing what I love to do and that's playing football." The light bulb went off for Bryant on the field last season, and is now doing so off of it. A rare talent, we don't doubt that Bryant can top his 92/1,382/12 2012.

Miles Austin said he is focusing on strengthening his hamstrings this offseason.
Austin played in all 16 games last season, but was consistently bothered by hip and hamstring issues. In 2011, he missed six games with a severe pull. "I'm definitely strengthening my hamstrings a lot more than I have been," said Austin. "Doing a different routine, a couple of extra exercises each day on our leg days."

Coale tore his ACL in November, and it's unlikely that he's going through practice full-speed. It's still good news for the 2012 fifth-round pick because just 11 days ago he had yet to be medically cleared. After spending last season on the practice squad, Coale faces an uphill battle for a roster spot.

Cowboys WR Tim Benford underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
Benford will miss the rest of rookie minicamp and OTAs before returning for training camp. The former Tennessee Tech receiver spent the entire 2012 season on the practice squad, and he'll face an uphill battle for a roster spot.
