Lions CB Chris Greenwood expects to compete for a starting job this season.
Lions GM Martin Mayhew has identified Greenwood as a player with "starting potential." A fifth-round pick last spring, Greenwood missed his entire rookie year due to abdominal surgery. DetroitLions.com reported in January there were "some lofty expectations being floated around" for Greenwood. It would be far from ideal for the Lions to enter Week 1 with Greenwood opposite Chris Houston.

DetroitLions.com says there are "some lofty expectations being floated around" the organization for CB Chris Greenwood next season.
Abdominal surgery cost Greenwood his entire rookie season. The fifth-round pick out of D-III Albion has an intriguing blend of size (6-foot-2) and speed (4.42) that had DC Gunther Cunningham comparing him to Brandon Carr after the 2012 draft. The Lions have four corners set to be free agents this offseason, so Greenwood could be in for a big role in 2013.

Greenwood has been practicing for three weeks, but the Lions deemed him not ready to help in 2012 after missing out on offseason and training camp workouts. The rookie fifth-rounder is an athletic size-speed corner out of small-school Albion.

Detroit now has three weeks to activate Greenwood from the PUP list. With the Lions' secondary among the thinnest in the league, it's likely a matter of when, not if, they activate their fifth-round draft pick.

Mikel Leshoure is being held out of team drills at Lions OTAs with an undisclosed injury.
"He's battling some stuff," coach Jim Schwartz said. "He can do some individual stuff but he's not ready to do any team work." There are no indications that the injury is serious, but it's worrisome news for a player who's had trouble staying healthy since being drafted. Leshoure can ill-afford more leg ailments after plodding through 2012. For now, Leshoure remains penciled in as the Lions' short-yardage "specialist" despite last season's anemic 3.71 yards per carry.

MLive.com considers Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate this season.
Broyles is recovering from a torn right ACL, and the Lions' only notable offseason receiver addition was sixth-round pick Corey Fuller. They must feel comfortable with Broyles' progress. In a six-game stretch last season, Broyles caught 21 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Broyles is questionable for Week 1, but once he's back he'll have a ton of potential in the Lions' high-powered attack while working opposite Megatron.
