According to "two NFL front office men," new Patriots DT Armond Armstead likely would have been a third-round pick in April's draft.
A third front-office man believes the 22-year-old CFL product would have been a third- or fourth-round pick. "He flashed a lot," a personnel executive said. "His hand use was good. I’m not sure he’s Cameron Wake, but he can be a solid NFL player." Armstead will likely be a situational player as he adjusts to the NFL game in 2013, but it's clear the Pats made the top reserve/future signing of the offseason.

Toronto Argonauts GM Jim Barker believes Patriots futures signee Armond Armstead has legit NFL first-round talent.
Armstead was an emerging player at USC before suffering a heart attack in 2011. "We don’t often in our league get NFL first round (draft picks)," Barker said. "He would have been a low first, early second." Barker also confirmed Armstead's heart has "checked out." The Pats may have gotten a reserve/future steal in Armstead, who's only 22 years old and dominated in the CFL.

Updating an earlier item, DT Armond Armstead's deal with the Patriots is for three years and $1.49 million, with $655,000 guaranteed.
It's a strong sign the Patriots expect the former USC Trojan to crack their 53-man roster in 2013. Just 22 years old, Armstead spent 2012 in the CFL after suffering a heart attack and missing USC's 2011 season. At 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, Armstead was a two-year starter for the Trojans before his health scare. He has experience at both tackle and end.

Patriots signed former USC and Toronto Argonauts DT Armond Armstead to a reserve/future contract.
Armstead worked out for several teams over the last week or so, including the Colts and Eagles. Armstead was forced to the CFL in 2012 after missing the 2011 season at USC after suffering a heart attack. Armstead, listed at 6-foot-5 and 298 pounds, recorded six sacks last season as the Argonauts won the Grey Cup. ESPN's Adam Schefter called him "the equivalent of a high draft pick."

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft confirmed Rob Gronkowski's fourth arm surgery went "as good as he could have hoped."
Per Kraft, Gronk will be back "as soon as possible." Right now, "as soon as possible" appears to be mid-August. That's because Gronk is tentatively slated for "minor" back surgery sometime in the next 3-4 weeks. Like Robert Griffin III, Gronk's Week 1 status will be hard to accurately gauge before training camp.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.
