Dolphins signed fifth-round RB Mike Gillislee to a four-year, $2.322 million contract.
Although Gillislee lacks special traits, he couldn't possibly be any worse than Dolphins incumbent backup and second-round flop Daniel Thomas. Gillislee fights hard for yards, has some necessary shake to him, and flashed violence in blitz pickup at Florida. With Lamar Miller having only carried the football 51 career times, Gillislee is a sleeper for rookie-year fantasy value.

A "longtime NFC scout" considers No. 164 pick RB Mike Gillislee a career backup.
Gillislee was not a special runner at Florida, but is considered NFL-ready in pass protection. That alone could make him Lamar Miller's primary backup this season. Even if Gillislee doesn't have starter's upside, "Fumbling" Daniel Thomas is on notice in Miami.

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland cited No. 164 pick Mike Gillislee's pass protection skills as a primary strength.
It's particularly notable because pass protection is often the best avenue for rookie running backs to see the field. The Fins badly need an upgrade on Daniel Thomas behind Lamar Miller. "He can pass protect," Ireland insisted. "Kind of paid his dues there at Florida. He was a one-year starter. He catches the ball well and he pass protects. He runs it very well as well. He’s tough."

Dolphins selected Florida RB Mike Gillislee with the No. 164 overall pick.
Gillislee (5-11, 208) carried the Gators' passing-inept offense on his back in 2012, rushing 244 times for 1,152 yards (4.72 YPC) and 10 touchdowns. He only made 23 career receptions, but flashed a mean streak in blitz pickup. Gillislee ran 4.55 at the Combine with a 1.59 ten-yard split. He is a decisive, fluid, athletic runner with some power and shake. Gillislee's vision and decision making behind blocks are works in progress, but he has starting potential down the line. He could eventually make Daniel Thomas expendable.

Daniel Thomas believes he's a legitimate contender for the Dolphins' starting running back job.
Thomas must not be watching much of his own film. "I don’t know why (Lamar Miller) would have the inside track," Thomas said incredulously Tuesday. "It’s an open competition. Everybody has a fair shot. The best player is going to get the job. Nobody has a leg up." Thomas does admit he's been "inconsistent" since being the No. 62 overall pick of the 2011 draft. All signs suggest the Dolphins want and expect Miller to be their No. 1 back.
