The Toronto Maple Leafs probably won't end up receiving anything for trading Jonathan Bernier beyond saved cap space, but at the same time there's a chance they'll end up with something substantial.
The Maple Leafs dealt Bernier to Anaheim for a conditional pick, but the problem is that the conditions requirements state that Bernier's team has to at least make it to the Stanley Cup Final AND he needs to start in half of the games. Given that Bernier is being brought in to serve as the backup, it would likely take an injury or disappointing season from John Gibson for Bernier to end up playing a central role in the playoffs. Earlier we said "Bernier's team" rather than Anaheim because if the Ducks trade him and Bernier plays in at least half of the playoffs games while his new team reaches the Stanley Cup Final, then the Ducks still owe Toronto compensation. However, if Bernier meets the game requirements and his team does win the Stanley Cup, then Toronto will receive a second-round pick. If they lose in the Stanley Cup Final, then Toronto receives a third-round pick. So under the right circumstances, Toronto could end up with something noteworthy from this trade. Jul 19 - 2:11 PM
