Brandon Manning's first goal of the season ended up being the game winner for Philadelphia as the visiting Flyers took care of the New York Islanders 4-1 Monday night.
Manning, a defensive defenseman, scored his first goal in 66 games. It gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead at 13:01 of the second period. He found himself in the unsual position of speeding into the offensive zone off a pass from fellow defenseman Andrew MacDonald before beating Isles goalie Thomas Greiss over the shoulder with a wrist shot. The Flyers are 35-24-12 on the season and 11-3-2 in their past 16 games. They're one point behind the Detroit Red Wings for the second Wild Card in the Eastern Conference with one game in hand. They are also three points behind the Isles for the first Wild Card with the same number of games played. After a goalless opening period, Nick Cousins gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead with his sixth goal of the season at 2:14 of the second period. Sam Gagner popped in his eighth goal of the season at 4:22 of the third period and Claude Giroux added his 19th at 19:33. Mar 21 - 10:40 PM
