Jean Ratelle's No. 19 will become the ninth player, and eighth number, to be retired by the New York Rangers next season. Joining Eddie Giacomin (1), Brian Leetch (2), Harry Howell (3), Rod Gilbert (7), Andy Bathgate (9), Adam Graves (9), Mark Messier (11) and Mike Richter (35).
"To have your sweater retired is the greatest honor a player can receive," Ratelle said. "You can’t ask for more than that." Ratelle, who was included in the NHL's Top-100 players, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985 after 20 sterling years with New York and Boston from 1960-61 to 1980-81. He scored 491 goals and 1,267 points in 1,281 games in his career, including 336 goals and 817 points in 862 games over 16 seasons with the Rangers. Though he never lifted Lord Stanley's cup, he did score 32 goals and 98 points in 123 career playoff games. He also received the Bill Masterton and Ted Lindsay along with a pair of Lady Byng trophies, along with five all-star selections.
