Player News - Aston Villa

Joleon Lescott and Gabby Agbonlahor helped Aston Villa earn their third win of the season.

This was a huge win for Villa, who needed the points in an already uphill battle to avoid relegation. Norwich were especially bad in this one, and Declan Rudd looked completely lost on the second goal. Norwich are now in the relegation zone, and they will have to fight off Sunderland and Aston Villa. The relegation race has a number of contenders, but this win was huge to give Aston Villa at least a small chance of survival.

While wallowing at the bottom of the table all season, Aston Villa may have a viable fantasy option when they host Norwich City this weekend in Leandro Bacuna.

The Villans were behind the eight ball in their midweek loss to West Ham United due to an early sending off of Jordan Ayew. Otherwise, they had kept two clean sheets in their previous three, conceding just once to table-leading Leicester in the other match. A home date against Norwich, who themselves have gone goalless in two of their last three, seems like a rare opportunity to jump on Aston Villa for fantasy purposes in weekly salary leagues. Bacuna is the best option, as he is playing further up in midfield an offers an attacking threat. Aston Villa will need a bit of help from their midfield as they have only Gabby Agbonlahor to turn for the striker position. The situation is ideal enough for Bacuna to make this week's Player Rankings.

Jordan Ayew was sent off in Aston Villa's 2-0 loss to West Ham United.

Ayew was sent off early on and cost fantasy managers who trusted him today. West Ham controlled the match from then on and were able to capitalize with two goals from Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyate. The match wasn't even close, as West Ham outshot Aston Villa 25 to 6, and controlled possession 68 percent of the time. Without Ayew in the next three matches, Villa's troubles deepen further.

Philippe Senderos has joined Grasshoppers on a six-month deal.

Senderos hasn't played much for Aston Villa this season and his contract was mutually terminated earlier this week. Senderos joins Grasshoppers on a trial six-month deal, but he won't be a factor in any fantasy league at this stage of his career. Even if he returns to the Premier League, he isn't worth owning.

Aston Villa's Brad Guzan was embarrassed in the team's 4-0 FA cup loss against Manchester City.

Guzan has been dropped from Villa's first team and hasn't played in the Premier League for a while now. Coming in relief for Mark Bunn in the FA Cup, Guzan didn't do anything to show fans he deserves a starting spot. His form has really fallen, and he isn't worth holding onto in any format.

Aston Villa will surely rue the away leg of the Midlands derby after failing to secure three points despite outshooting and outplaying West Brom at The Hawthorns.

Villa could not manage a goal despite holding nearly two-thirds of the match's possession and outshooting the Baggies by 10 shots. Mark Bunn had the easiest night on the pitch as Aston Villa held West Brom to zero shots on goal, but the away side could not do anything on the other end. The club's best chance came in the first half when Jordan Ayew was taken down in the box by Jonas Olsson, who did not make much of an attempt on the ball. But the referee ruled against a penalty kick despite rampant protests from the Villa players. With the draw, Villa sit bottom, nine points from leaving the relegation zone.

Aston Villa have strung together two positive results in a row after earning a point against league leaders Leicester City.

Leicester had the opportunity to put the match away but Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty and allowed Aston Villa to stay in the match. Rudy Gestede scored in the second half to tie the match at 1-1 and earn Villa a point. Villa are still in last place, but after two positive performances in a row, there is hope for this team that they might get back in the relegation battle instead of sitting alone in last place.

Joleon Lescott's second-half goal served as a monumental moment in the Aston Villa season as the club secured only its second win of the season in a 1-0 victory against Crystal Palace.

It had been nearly five months since Aston Villa last won a Premier League match, which came on the opening day of the season against Bournemouth. But it was Lescott's 58th-minute header that was fumbled by Crystal Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey off a corner kick from Jordan Veretout that proved the difference for the bottom-of-the-table hosts, who now move five points back of 19th-place Sunderland. Lescott also heralded the defense to its first clean sheet since the stunning 0-0 draw with Manchester City in Week 12. With Micah Richards on the bench recovering from an injury and Jack Grealish out, Remi Garde went with the recently-recovered Jores Okore in defense while Libor Kozak received his first Premier League start in more than two years.

Remi Garde is sweating on the fitness of captain Micah Richards after the Villa defender was forced off at Wycombe Wanderers due to a foot / ankle related problem.

Richards – playing at right back in place of the injured Alan Hutton (hamstring) – opened the scoring at Adams Park yesterday as Villa left with a share of the spoils to force a replay against their League One counterparts. But, the 27-year-old was withdrawn with less than 10 minutes remaining and his involvement in the upcoming Premier League matches against Crystal Palace and Leicester City is questionable. However, initial reports do suggest the injury is not serious. "I don't know exactly," Remi Garde said on the extent of Richards’ injury. "He had to come off. I haven't spoken with the doctor yet. I don't think it's very important - but it was important enough for him to ask to come off." Joleon Lescott could be called upon as an emergency full-back to help fill the void.

Jack Grealish is a doubt for the upcoming Premier League matches versus Crystal Palace and Leicester City after missing Saturdays’ FA Cup clash with Wycombe Wanderers because of illness.

Grealish was a notable absentee from the Villa squad who travelled to Adams Park for a tricky third round cup tie against League One opposition. "He was ill with tonsillitis, he had fever and he couldn't train for the last three or four days," said Remi Garde. Despite his recent disciplinary problems, Grealish could still have a major part to play in the clubs’ fight against relegation. With Adama Traore sidelined for up-to three months, the Villa faithful will be hoping that Grealish can recapture some of the form that thrust him into the Premier League limelight when he first burst onto scene more than a year ago.
Jan 9 - 6:35 PM

Remi Garde confirmed during his sides’ pre-match FA Cup press-conference that Adama Traore will be missing for around ten weeks after further tests revealed the summer signing had broken a bone in his foot.

Garde was confident earlier this week that the injury which forced Traore off at the Stadium of Light was only minor hinting that the forward could feature against Wycombe Wanderers. However, an X-ray showed that the teenager had suffered a fractured metatarsal which will mean up-to three months on the sidelines. Alan Hutton, Carlos Sanchez and Gabby Agbonlahor are also likely to miss out this weekend although the trio will be given every chance to prove themselves over the next 24 hours.

Carles Gil was Aston Villa's lone bright spot in their 3-1 loss to Sunderland.

Gil started in relief of a number of Aston Villa injuries and scored an incredible goal to tie the score in the second half. A cross from Adama Traore found him in the box, and he acrobatically finished for a spectacular goal. Gil could earn another start next week, and it's worth noting he took two of Aston Villa's three corner kicks, meaning he could be on corner-kick duty going forward, which would be huge for his fantasy value in leagues that reward points for corners.

Aly Cissokho was recalled from his loan to Porto to join a struggling Aston Villa defense but his return didn't help in Villa's 3-1 loss to Sunderland.

Sunderland have a pretty bad attack but that didn't matter much against Aston Villa. Patrick van Aanholt opened up the scoring and Jermain Defoe added two more late to finish Villa off. The starting back four of Hutton, Richards, Lescott, and Cissokho shouldn't get another start, and I would imagine Remi Garde will be making changes for the next match. If Cissokho starts again, he will be a DFS option as he put in four crosses last week and has the potential to contribute in attack.

Problems deepen at Villa Park after Remi Garde confirmed Adama Traore and Alan Hutton were both forced off at the Stadium of Light because of injury.

Traore looked bright following his introduction from the bench and it was his excellent run and superb cross which was exquisitely volleyed home by Carles Gil to draw Villa level on Wearside. However, Garde revealed post-match that the summer signing from Barcelona took a knock and was unable to continue. "I think (Traore) got a kick on his foot. He tried to carry on but I had to get him off," the Frenchman said. "Yes, he came off because he was injured." Alan Hutton will be assessed due to a muscular problem: "I didn't speak to the doctor but it looks like a hamstring."
Jan 3 - 8:14 AM

A back problem is likely to keep Gabby Agbonlahor out until the New Year.

Remi Garde confirmed: "Gabby is still struggling," ahead of his sides trip to the Stadium of Light. The French boss also revealed that Carlos Sanchez (hamstring) has been ruled out although his injury is not serious which could see a return in the FA Cup. However, there better news as Jores Okore (knee inflammation) re-joined the group on Wednesday and the defender could be in line for a recall. Ashley Westwood and Jordan Ayew are both suspended.
