Growing defensive concerns for Aston Villa as central defender Philippe Senderos adds to Pauls Lamberts’ mounting injury list with teammates Ron Vlaar [calf] and Nathan Baker [knee] both struggling to be available for the visit of Southampton this weekend.

Villa ended a disastrous run of six league defeats with a creditable draw at the Boleyn Ground before the international break – a game which marked the comeback of Philippe Senderos replacing the injured Nathan Baker. Senderos had just recovered from a thigh problem but despite only playing four minutes since limping out of the Euro qualifying defeat to Slovenia back in October he was called up to the Swiss national squad again. However the defender failed to make the game against Lithuania having returned to Bodymoor Heath after a training ground calf injury. Jores Okore is on standby to make his first competitive appearance for Villa since recovering from his ruptured ACL.

Ron Vlaar's agent has started rumors about the defender possibly moving to Manchester United or Arsenal in the near future.

Both clubs would present a very interesting option for the Netherlands defender. Both are big clubs with big aspirations and both are in need of a solid center-back at the moment. Vlaar's contract expires in the summer but Aston Villa could try to move him in January in an attempt to get something in return. Vlaar is a proven defender at the top level and would be a great signing for any club.

Aston Villa took the initial lead but a straight red card given to Christian Benteke turned the tide as Tottenham would score twice late on to hand the Lions a bitter 1-2 loss.

It was a tale of two matches with a confrontation between Benteke and Spurs' Ryan Mason acting as the turning point. For the first hour, it was all Villa, with a nicely executed counterattack resulting in the opening goal a quarter hour in. Charles N'Zogbia sent a low cross into the path of Andreas Weimann and the Austrian slid his body to meet it and beat Hugo Lloris. Benteke, who had been quiet since returning from injury, looked as strong and sharp as ever, but a moment of mental weakness ended his day when raised his hand to the face of Mason. Villa had not scored a league goal since September 13th and there was reason to think they were close to turning things around but the loss and subsequent loss of Benteke for the next three matches has them in serious trouble.

Aston Villa dominated possession for large stretches of the match but couldn't score while giving up two goals to league bottom QPR.

Aston Villa have been struggling mightily to put shots on target all season. Their early season run of luck (four goals on six shots on target) combined with strong defending saw them paper over the obvious deficiencies for a while. The wheels have started to come off as the defense has been less tight and the attack has remained anemic. Carlos Sanchez was one of few bright spots with a shot on target combined with two interceptions and four tackles won and it surely seemed like more than that. Villa will have to start worrying about a relegation struggle if Christian Benteke doesn't ignite the attack soon.

Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton continues to impress fantasy managers and provided his owners with ten points this weekend.

Hutton didn't get a clean sheet but provided stats in five different categories to get to the double digit points mark this weekend. He has 69% more points than the second highest fantasy scorer on his team - Andreas Weimann. For a defender to pull of something like this is incredible. On top of that, Hutton is the fourth best fantasy defender this year, ahead of the likes of Nathaniel Clyne, Branislav Ivanovic, and Patrick van Aanholt. Being owned by only 5.05% of Yahoo! managers, Hutton is a fantastic differential play going forward.

Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar was active in his return to action this weekend and finished with eight fantasy points.

The Villa defender registered two blocked shots, two passes intercepted, and two tackles won. That was decent for someone just returning from injury and Vlaar showed why he is a valid fantasy option even without a clean sheet. He is cheap enough in most formats to where he makes for an excellent choice in plus matchups. Villa just came out of a very rough stretch of matches and their schedule gets easier with QPR, Tottenham, West Ham, Southampton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, and West Brom up next.

Aston Villa were defeated thoroughly by Everton, 3-0, marking their fourth consecutive loss in the league.

On the bright side, the losses were all against the best clubs in the league and it would be difficult for any side to rack up many points over that stretch. Still, one can't help but feel the culture of losing may take some time to repair as Villa look ahead to a much friendlier schedule. They need Christian Benteke to step up if he is to be the central figure in their attack. He has been either injured or in poor form for a very long time now. Charles N'Zogbia, another potential attacking weapon, did absolutely nothing again and is only hurting the cause. The lack of Fabian Delph did not do them any favors either. To add one more insult, there was an injury. Nathan Baker had to leave in the first half with a knock and may be a doubt for next weekend.

Aston Villa were dealt a major injury blow as their worst fears were realized when they learned Fabian Delph would require surgery to repair the shoulder he damaged in training this week, with initial reports suggesting he won't return until the new year.

There are many intangibles to Delph's game that Villa, and the England national team for that matter, will sorely miss while he is sidelined, so the next couple of months could be a real test for the Lions. On the bright side, they have already cleared the hardest part of their schedule for the first half of the season and have shown enough defensively to make one think they can find points until the new year. Carlos Sanchez projects to slot into Delph's central midfield spot but his fantasy potential is not likely to compare.
Oct 17 - 1:38 PM

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is sweating on the fitness of England midfielder Fabian Delph after a freak training injury caused extensive shoulder damage which may require surgery.

Delph returned from international duty unscathed but during his first session back fell awkwardly landing on his shoulder and Lambert is waiting to discover if the player will need an operation to repair the problem. The club are yet to formally confirm the player will miss the trip to Goodison Park on Saturday but any involvement is highly unlikely with a period of rest recommended in the first instance. Summer signing Carlos Sanchez remains on standby for only his second Premier League start. However there was better news with the timely return of Dutch stopper Ron Vlaar who could replace the doubtful Senderos [thigh] with Christian Benteke also pushing for a place in the eleven after impressing over the past two weeks.

Aston Villa youngster Jack Grealish has signed a new four-year deal with the club.

The 19-year-old has established a spot in the Villa rotation and has made some appearances off the bench in the Premier League. He looks like a promising lad and Villa have done a great move to sign him to a long-term deal. We don't think Grealish is worth owning in fantasy this season, but if any Villa players gets injured, he could quickly become a fantasy asset.

Aston Villa defender Edna Stevens has completed a loan move to Northampton that will last a month.

Stevens only has six starts for Aston Villa since joining in 2012 and spent last year on loan at Notts County and Doncaster. He is obviously not Premier League material and at age 24, Aston Villa might want to sell him for whatever they can get. Don't expect fantasy production from Stevens.

Paul Lambert will be hoping captain Ron Vlaar can step up his recovery from a calf injury this week ahead of the trip to Goodison Park after Switzerland confirmed defensive teammate Philippe Senderos suffered a thigh injury during the loss to Slovenia on Thursday.

Vlaar has missed the last four Premier League games and with a set of tricky fixtures coming up the Claret & Blues need their talismanic Dutch defender to hit the ground running following the loss of Senderos who has returned to Bodymoor for further assessment. Although the severity of the problem has not yet been confirmed a grade one tear is likely to keep Senderos out for around three weeks with Nathan Baker and Ciaran Clark battling it out for the remaining place while Jores Okore [ACL] is closing in on a return after a year out.

Oct 11 - 1:53 PM

Dutch defender Ron Vlaar is closing in on a return to first team action as the Aston Villa skipper looks to step up his recovery from a calf injury during the international break.

Vlaar will miss the upcoming Euro qualifying games against Kazakhstan and Iceland to focus on a return in game week eight when Villa travel to Goodison Park. After a win at Anfield – their third in the opening four games – Villa were sitting pretty in the Premier but a loss to Arsenal at home with a decimated squad [illness] was followed up by tricky set of fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester City which have left the Claret & Blues on the slide. The return of Ron Vlaar will be a major boost with an important set of matches coming up but Paul Lambert will be very aware that he doesn’t rush his captain back too quickly after a history of muscular problems. Nathan Baker could continue to deputise in his absence.
Oct 7 - 6:35 AM

Aston Villa nearly pulled off another surprising clean sheet, keeping Manchester City out as the match entered the final ten minutes, but the visitors would finally break through twice, and the Lions suffered a 0-2 loss.

Villa are amid a horrific schedule that has seen them play last year's top four over four straight weeks. Yet they came oh, so close to fetching their 2nd cleanie in that stretch and 4th of the season, but the pressure from City finally boiled over in the end. Still, Villa should be feeling confident going forward with their defense, and fantasy managers should be as well in plus matches, with Hutton being the best play among their defenders to date. On a side note, Christian Benteke made his first appearance of the season as a substitute. Villa would be a complete threat if their star forward can stay fit and find some form.

Oct 4 - 2:39 PM

Ron Vlaar continues to struggle with a calf injury and will miss the weekend match against Manchester City.

Vlaar has now missed a number of games with this injury and Paul Lambert doesn't think he can make it back in time for this weekend. Lambert also mentioned that Vlaar is doing really well and all signs point towards him making a return for Aston Villa's next Premier League game, which is against Everton on October 18th.
