Micah Richards wore the armband for Aston Villa once ahead tonight and seems set to be their captain for the upcoming season.

Richards is a quality center-back who's had trouble staying fit the past couple of seasons but Aston Villa are giving him a chance at revitalizing his career. Richards getting the armband in pre-season is a huge vote of confidence from Tim Sherwood and we like his chances of starting this season as long as he remains fit. Villa's defense should be decent enough to see Richards perform as an average fantasy defenders, and he can provide good value in late fantasy drafts.

Libor Kozak scored twice in Aston Villa's 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton.

Kozak started the match and played very well, leading the line for Aston Villa alongside Gabby Agbonlahor in a 4-4-2. Scott Sinclair and Leandro Bacuna were on the wings, supporting the attack. Kozak had a number of chances to score and netted on two of them before being substituted for newcomer Jordan Ayew. With Villa set to sign Emmanuel Adebayor, that seems to leave them with four strikers in what will presumably be a 4-4-2 formation this season. The unknown leaves all of them with a decreased fantasy value at the moment.

Aston Villa have signed Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo.

Crespo is a 28-year-old who has experience at both La Liga and Serie A. He is generally deployed as a full-back who can play on both sides of the pitch. He joins Villa for an undisclosed fee but is expected to feature on the right, across from Jordan Amavi. He isn't known to go forward very well and he lacks the attacking statistics required to make him a useful fantasy player, so we recommend that you avoid him in your fantasy drafts.

Villa boss Tim Sherwood is hoping teenage sensation Jack Grealish will be ready for the start of the season after struggling to recover from a thigh problem.

Grealish was rested for Villa’s first pre-season game in Portugal as a precaution - due to hamstring tightness - and is yet to feature this summer. However the 19 year-old will look to step up his rehab this week in attempt to make the opener at Premier League newcomers AFC Bournemouth. Villa are already without Jores Okore – knee surgery – and Gary Gardner – ankle ligaments – although the pair are targeting a comeback in September. Tim Sherwood will need all hands to the decks following the big money departures of Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph but the former Tottenham manager has recruited well with Jordan Ayew – from Lorient – being the latest addition.

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Jordan Ayew for an undisclosed fee that's rumored to be in the region of £8.5m.

Ayew has signed a five-year deal with Villa after coming over from French side Lorient. The 23-year-old striker is expected to lead Aston Villa's line this season as the replacement for Christian Benteke and considering Benteke scored or assisted on 49% of Aston Villa's goals last season, Ayew has huge shoes to fill. Ayew is a fantasy option immediately, but considering he scored 12 goals in 31 matches last season, he shouldn't be one to command a very high price.

Both on and off the pitch, this summer's Gold Cup was mired in criticism and it ended in forgettable fashion as the United States lost the 3rd place consolation match to Panama, 1-1 (2-3 penalties).

After failing to reach the finals of this tournament for the first time in six attempts, the United States added another unwanted stat to this summer's nightmare by losing consecutive Gold Cup matches for the first time. They once again dominated the stat sheet as they did against Jamaica, and Brad Guzan bounced back in a big way, playing error-free and coming up with a couple of quality stops, but it wasn't meant to be. Now, after players speaking out about how poorly CONCACAF have managed the tournament, questions are being raised about the future of Jurgen Klinsmann. About the only memorable sight from today, outside of Clint Dempsey's goal, set up by DeAndre Yedlin, was the final appearance by DaMarcus Beasley with the Stars and Stripes.

Callum Robinson scored Aston Villa's lone goal in a 1-1 friendly draw against Walsall.

Aston Villa dominated the first half but a draw was likely fair at the final whistle. We have a few takeaways from this match, the most important one that Aston Villa still don't have capable strikers. Robinson scored the opener but also missed a few chances and Aston Villa were close to goal several times without being able to capitalize. It's great to see Libor Kozak out there and he should have earned a penalty, but he likely won't be able to carry Villa to enough wins this season. Jordan Ayew needs to arrive as soon as possible or Villa need to look elsewhere for goals.

Libor Kozak is determined to come back stronger than ever after recovering from a broken leg.

Kozak suffered the broken leg from a training ground tackle on January 1st, 2014 and was forced to miss seven months after undergoing surgery. He then had a number of set-backs and had to undergo a follow-up procedure, but is now returning to full speed. He is set to participate in pre-season and wants to be full speed by week one, but it's unlikely that he'll be able to go 90 minutes by that time. Kozak will have the chance to lead Aston Villa in attack with only Jordan Ayew there to give him any sort of competition for the starting striker position, but the two may end up splitting time. A player without a guaranteed role that is coming off a serious injury should not be on your fantasy radar.
Jul 24 - 8:09 PM

Aston Villa have already found the replacement for Christian Benteke in Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew.

Ayew's brother is already at Swansea and it seems like both of them will play in the Premier League next season. Jordan is a 23-year old striker that comes for a fee in the region of $14-$19 million. He had 13 goals in League 1 last season while playing for Lorient, which was his highest goal tally in six seasons in the top flight. Ayew will likely be a nailed on striker at Aston Villa but it'll be hard to use him in fantasy as he's not a proven goal-scorer at this stage.

The United States failed to defend their Gold Cup title and were left out of the final for the first time in six tournaments as Jamaica shocked them with a 1-2 win in Atlanta.

Perhaps things were too easy for the US a couple of nights ago when they simply cruised past Cuba, but they were a gear behind Jamaica from the jump and Brad Guzan looks to be the culprit of both of the goals conceded in the first half. The second of which was inexcusable as Guzan left the area with the ball in hand, setting up the free kick which the Reggae Boyz converted with aplomb. Down two at the break, Jurgen Klinsmann must have had quite the locker room speech as it was a different looking US side in the second half. Michael Bradley cut the deficit to one in the 48th minute and the onslaught continued the rest of the way, but the US simply couldnt covert any of their many chances. Its a tough pill for the US to swallow and it draws more criticism of Guzan's play in recent months, as Aston Villa set to open their season with him as their only experienced keeper option.

Scott Sinclair led Aston Villa to their first pre-season win of the season against Swindon.

Villa won comfortably at County Ground with goals from Scott Sinclair and Jerell Sellars. Tim Sherwood gave Jordan Amavi his first minutes in an Aston Villa shirt and the defender impressed by putting in some dangerous crosses early on. Despite Sinclair's goal, it's very hard to trust him in fantasy considering he couldn't crack Tim Sherwood's rotation at the end of the last season. It's also hard to trust anyone on Aston Villa, as their attack looks to be severely damaged with the departure of Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph. Looks elsewhere for fantasy forwards.

The United States punched their ticket to a Gold Cup semi-final appearance by mauling Cuba 6-0, with a Clint Dempsey hat trick leading the way.

After a solid but perhaps not spectacular trip through the group stage, the United States kicked it up another gear against a Cuban side that was well overmatched, most noticeable their keeper, whose play can be argued to be responsible for at least a couple of the goals. Dempsey started things with a header from a Timothy Chandler cross. Goals would follow from Gyasi Zardes and Aaron Johansson before Omar Gonzalez made it 4-0 just before half. Dempsey would grab his second goal by converting a penalty then score his tourney leading sixth goal in the 78th minute. Brad Guzan kept a relatively easy clean sheet. They await the winner of Haiti v Jamaica to learn of their semi-final opponent.

Aston Villa played to a 0-0 final against Sporting Braga, with Christian Benteke noticeably left out of action.

With a move to Liverpool apparently imminent, the Belgian striker spent the evening in the stands, as Tim Sherwood's side came up without a goal on the heels of a loss against Fulham earlier in the week. It is of note that Sherwood deployed a 4-4-1-1 with Carles Gil occupying the role behind the striker. Charles N'Zogbia came up with the best chance of the day though as the midfield situation is one to monitor in the coming weeks. There could be a value pick among the bunch though the loss of Benteke would limit the potential.

After losing his starting spot to Shay Given at the end of last season, Brad Guzan appears to head the queue to start for Villa again this season.

The Birmingham Mail are reporting that Aston Villa, who lost Shay Given to Stoke City last week, have abandoned their search for a new starting goalkeeper and will restore Guzan to that role for the 2015-16 season. Villa were bad all over the park last season so it's hard to know how much to pin on Guzan vs. how much to pin on issues in defense and in management for their poor form. Whether through lack of viable alternatives or reconsideration of fault, Villa appear to be keeping faith with US international Guzan. Guzan and his US teammates will face Panama in their final group stage match at the CONCACAF Goal Cup tonight having already secured top spot in the group.

Antonio Luna has left Aston Villa for La Liga side Eibar.

Luna played a fair amount in his first season at Aston Villa but lost his spot in the rotation halfway through the season and never found his form again. He was later loaned out to Italian side Verona but never even featured. He will now try to resurrect his career in his homeland but the chances aren't in his favor.
