Ron Vlaar is a major doubt for Aston Villa's match against Arsenal this weekend.

Vlaar is struggling with a calf injury and likely won't be available when his team faces Arsenal. That's a big blow for Villa as they are a significantly better side with Vlaar involved. When healthy, he provides a level of experience and skill that's among the most consistent in the Premier League. We recommend him for fantasy in plus matchups, but of course he is not to be considered this week due to the injury.

Joe Cole is back at training but is behind on fitness and will almost certainly not start this weekend.

Cole is back to his old self - injured or not fit. He hasn't been able to string more than a few games together for a few years now and should not be considered for any fantasy squads anymore. Aston Villa face a strong Arsenal squad this weekend in what should be an entertaining match, but we'd recommend against using too many of their players in fantasy.

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has returned to training after a long absence due to an ACL tear last season.

This is a huge boost for Villa and they can certainly use a striker at the moment. Paul Lambert confirmed that Benteke has practiced and if there are no complications, he will continue practicing. The Belgian striker will not be an immediate option as he returns from injury but should be picked up in most year-long fantasy leagues. He is unusable in daily leagues until he plays at least 60 minutes in a match.

Following his manager's footsteps, Alan Hutton has signed a new three-year deal with Aston Villa.

The 29 year old defender has completed a complete turnaround under Paul Lambert. He is a regular starter this year after being frozen out for the previous two years under Lambert. The deal is reportedly worth around £40,000 a week. Aston Villa are bound to regress after their hot start, and Hutton will likely lose some of his value as the season goes on. He remains an option in deep leagues and in plus matchups.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has signed an extension with the club that will take him through June of 2018.

That was quick. Three games and seven points into the season and Paul Lambert has landed a new contract. There's a lot to consider here. First, Paul Lambert kept his team in the Premier League last year even though his two top strikers were injured for long periods of time. He has also kept them very competitive this season and has generally exceeded experts' projections. The bad part is that Lambert hasn't made any good moves during the transfer windows but a big part of that has been his lack of funds. Overall, Lambert is on the same level as Villa, mediocre.

Aston Villa have stunned Liverpool in the middle of Anfield by winning 1-0.

Villa have started the season in spectacular fashion, coming out with ten points out of their first four matches for the first time since 1998. Villa took the lead through a scrappy Gabby Agbonlahor goal and dominated the rest of the match, looking like the better team. They will finish the gameweek in second place after Chelsea, just two points behind. The talk about Aston Villa fighting the relegation battle has to stop now.

Gabby Agbonlahor has signed a new deal with Aston Villa that will keep him at the club until 2018.

The forward is an important part of Aston Villa's squad, despite being a poor fantasy choice. Agbonlahor is a good midfielder who can create chances and attract defensive attention from the opposition. The problem for him is that he doesn't score nor shoot enough to gain good fantasy value and was actually averaging negative points through the first two weeks. He scored a goal in week 3, but trying to guess when Gabby scores is a terrible way to play fantasy soccer. He has 68 goals in 276 matches in an Aston Villa shirt.

Fabian Delph made his England debut in a 2-0 win over Switzerland.

England started their Euro 2016 Qualification run with a 2-0 win and Delph was a big part of it as he played the entire 90 minutes. The midfielder showed some great passing ability, completing all 26 of his first half passes and finishing the match with a 97% passing accuracy. He did however receive a yellow card, which is quite customary for him (he has 43 yellow cards in 154 career appearances). Delph is a solid midfielder who plays a huge role for Villa but he doesn't provide enough stats to be fantasy relevant. Avoid for now.

Ron Vlaar is a late-fitness check ahead of Aston Villa's weekend clash against Liverpool.

Ron Vlaar suffered a calf injury last weekend in Villa's clash against Hull City and will have to face a late fitness check ahead of this weekend's match against Liverpool. Vlaar didn't participate in Holland's Euro 2016 Qualifier as he is still recovering from the calf injury. The Netherlands defender only had a short break between the World Cup and the start of the Premier League season and small injuries like this one might be a regular occurrence this season. Keep and eye out for his status if you use him in any fantasy leagues.
Sep 9 - 12:06 AM

Aston Villa defender Jores Okore is hoping to be fit when his team faces Liverpool this weekend.

The Aston Villa defender has missed the beginning of the season due to his recovery from long-term injury not being complete. The youngster tore his ACL last season and is just now returning to match-level fitness. Villa will likely take their time with Okore since he is one of their prized assets that is expected to be a big part of their future. Don't utilize Okore this week but keep him in mind as we go forward since he and Ron Vlaar could make a great defensive duo.

Tom Cleverley completed a loan move to Aston Villa on Tuesday.

25-year-old Cleverley has signed a season-long deal at Villa with the option of a permanent £7.5 million move in January, following a remarkable 24 hours of frantic negotiations. Paul Lambert’s late bid on Monday night was agreed by the Premier League more than 16 hours after the transfer deadline once the "deal sheet" sent through had been fully reviewed and verified. Cleverley is hoping the move can revitalise his flagging career, both at club level and in an international sense, as the midfielder looks to break back in to Roy Hodgson's England squad.

Karim El Ahmadi has agreed a three-year deal to return to Feyenoord for an undisclosed fee.

El Ahmadi played 26 Premier League games for Aston Villa last season but was deemed surplus to requirements for the season ahead, so manager Paul Lambert has allowed the midfielder to rejoin his old club Feyenoord.

Aston Villa continued their strong start of the season with a win over Hull City.

Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor both netted for Villa on way to a 2-1 win over Hull City. They now have seven points from their first three matches and considering only 34 were needed to stay up in the Premier League last season, they are very well on course to stay up even their strong form goes away when they meet tougher opposition. They are also expecting a boost from Christian Benteke and Libor Kozak later in the season, and could potentially fight for a top 10 spot if they can remain competitive until their strikers' return.

Alan Hutton should be high on the list of defenders you're considering for Week 3 of the Yahoo Fantasy Premier League game.

Many people had forgotten Hutton was still at Villa before his name showed up in the line-ups on opening day, but the Scotland defender has already started making up for lost time after rebuilding his relationship with Paul Lambert. He was excellent in the win at Stoke and followed that up with a man-of-the-match performance - and 16 fantasy points - against Newcastle, so should be considered for the home game against Hull.

Manchester United have reportedly accepted an £8million bid from Aston Villa for oft-criticized midfielder Tom Cleverley.

It wasn't long ago that Tom Cleverley was in contention for the honor of "next big thing" for Manchester United and England. After a couple seasons where he failed to show significant progress he has gone from hot prospect to maligned suspect. Perhaps a move away from the spotlight and to a club where he might have a chance to play more is exactly what the player needs to revitalize a flagging career. The price is a little steep for Villa but there is certainly upside if Cleverley realizes all or even some of his potential.
