Player News - Aston Villa

Joleon Lescott didn't survive the Tony Pulis purge and will now join fellow former Citizens Micah Richards and Scott Sinclair at Aston Villa.

There are worse transfer strategies than making bets on high quality fringe England internationals who make moves to big clubs only to see their careers stall. With Richards and Sinclair already present at Villa Park, Lescott makes it three that follow that same storyline. Lescott should be a regular starter for Tim Sherwood as he looks to keep Villa out of the relegation zone.

Jack Grealish missed Aston Villa's week four match with an ankle injury.

Our own Galin Dragiev had recommended Grealish last week but the midfielder picked up an ankle injury in training on Friday and was forced to miss out. Scott Sinclair got the start in his place and ended up scoring a brace to go along with his hat-trick in midweek last week. It's uncertain who will start for Aston Villa in week five, but we are assuming Sinclair gets the nod after his two impressive performances last week.

Tim Sherwood has remained hopeful that Adama Traore and Jack Grealish will be available for week five.

Traore missed week four with an ankle injury that doesn't sound to be too serious and he has a good chance at recovering for week five, especially with the extended rest he'll be awarded due to the international break. Jack Grealish also suffered an ankle injury and he is also questionable for week five. There is a lot of time left until then, so check back in the days before the match to confirm their status.

Aston Villa youngster Riccardo Calder will leave the club on loan in the next 24 hours.

Clader will join the Dundee in the Scotting Premier League in a move that's the supposed to earn him more playing time. The 19-year-old is a highly regarded left-back/left-mid and will have a chance at first-team football next season. He obviously shouldn't be owned in any fantasy leagues this year.

Scott Sinclair scored twice to help Aston Villa to a 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

Aston Villa got ahead early from the penalty spot but Sunderland were able to rebound Jeremain Lens and Yann M'Vila. Sunderland will be happy with the result as they earn a point on the road in a great comeback. Jeremain Lens has been their best player so far this season and he's looking to be a great fantasy option for the season ahead.

Rudy Gestede gets his easiest matchup of the season in week four, at home against Sunderland.

Sunderland have allowed teams to shoot 19 times per game against them, highest in the league by a margin. They've also allowed nine goals in their first three matches, which were against Leicester, Norwich, and Swansea. There hasn't been much to be optimistic about at Sunderland, and Aston Villa can take advantage this week when they face them. Gestede should be licking his lips at the opportunities he'll have on Saturday.

Aston Villa midfielder Aleksander Tonev has completed a permanent move to Seria A newcomers Frosinone.

Tonev never established a rotation spot at Aston Villa and was a huge disappointment for fans. Everyone expected him to replace Bulgarian legend Stilian Petrov at the club, but Tonev never became half the player Petrov was. He has made 17 appearances for Villa but his only note-worthy contribution was a seven-match ban for racial abuse. Villa should be happy they've able to recoup some of the money they spent on him.

Jack Grealish started in place of Scott Sinclair in Aston Villa's week three match.

Grealish played the full 90 in Aston Villa's loss to Crystal Palace and despite looking a bit rusty, he seems to be the preferred choice for Tim Sherwood. It's important to note that both Sinclair and Jordan Ayew were on the bench for that match and both should be considered as very risky to own in fantasy leagues this season. The reasons are that they aren't guaranteed playing time and Aston Villa's attack lacks goals to bring them relevant fantasy value. Avoid Ayew and Sinclair for now.

Adama Traore is doubtful for Aston Villa's week four clash against Sunderland.

Traore has looked great for Aston Villa so far but he suffered an ankle injury that will likely keep him out against Sunderland this weekend. The injury doesn't seem too serious and he should be able to return after the international break. Traore is a high upside player who can be had for almost free in all leagues right now, and he's worth the investment in draft leagues where owners have an injury slot.

Scott Sinclair scored a hat-trick for Aston Villa in their 5-3 win against Notts County in the Capital One Cup.

Sinclair scored twice from open play and then from the penalty spot and looked overall pretty impressive against much lesser competition. Notts County is not a very good club and Villa should be embarrassed to have allowed three goals to them. The good news is that they were decent in attack and new signing Adama Traore scored once again in just his second Villa match. Look for them to try to improve in attack as the season goes on.

Leandro Bacuna has signed a new five-year deal with Aston Villa.

The defender/midfielder has played 180 minutes in two matches this season and is clearly the first-choice right-back for Tim Sherwood. He gives Aston Villa a good attacking option from the back and defends competently. The biggest knock on his fantasy value is that he is considered a midfielder by most fantasy games and that disqualifies him from getting a clean sheet bonus. Due to that, he has fairly low fantasy value.

Jack Grealish is expected to be back into contention this weekend after coming through a development match unscathed on Monday night.

Grealish grabbed the winner against Derby County and his 90-minutes is likely to mean the 19 year-old will be included in the squad which travels to Selhurst Park in game week three. The young midfielder could be joined by Carles Gil who was also playing for the first time since injuring his ankle during pre-season although the Spanish playmaker did depart early due to groin tightness. Tim Sherwood confirms Jose Angel Crespo "is progressing well" following a groin issue and "won't be too far away" while Jores Okore is back in "very light training" following knee surgery. New signing Adama Traore - who was making his first Villa appearance - also completed 90-minutes.

Sunderland target old faces Kieran Richardson and Fabio Borini in an attempt to turn around their desperate start to the season…

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Dick Advocaat has turned to two old faces to tackle some familiar problems. No points from two matches – both of which could be considered ‘six pointers’ – with seven conceded is not what fans expected. The pre-season optimism surrounding new signings has quickly disappeared and the prospect of veteran Richardson and unproven Borini will do little to restore it. 21-year-old debutant Duncan Watmore has looked the Black Cats most effective striker so far this season, scoring with just their second shot on target at Norwich. Nothing too surprising there, but the newly assembled back four has even fallen below last season’s standards. This week’s team meeting needs to provide a solution, or at least a reaction otherwise Dick Advocaat will be re-thinking his retirement. Perhaps he need to convince his players it is April…

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Adama Traore from Barcelona.

The 19-year-old midfielder comes on a five-year deal and will wear number 20. Traore is really excited about joining Villa and spoke about it in depth in the interview linked below. He spoke in detail about learning from Lionel Messi and how important it is to be humble and a "real professional footballer". It certainly seems that Traore has a good head on his shoulders and fans will be hoping to see that pay off on the pitch. Traore could become a fantasy option if he secures a starting spot in Tim Sherwood's rotation.
