Chile took an early 2-0 lead over underdog Australia but needed a late goal from Jean Beausejour to seal the deal in a 3-1 win over the Socceroos.

It looked to be a route early with Alexiz Sanchez bossing the pitch, scoring the opener and assisting Jorge Valdivia on their second goal within fifteen minutes but they looked to have lost their menace after the two goal cushion. Gary Medel was marking Tim Cahill when the former Everton man scored to make it a contest but was otherwise solid, including a completing 43/43 passes in the first half. But it was the Wigan substitute Beausejor that gave the Chileans the late spark they needed to put the game away, threatening consistently from the left in the last twenty minutes, and his efforts were rewarded with a goal in stoppage time. Chile got the result they needed but will have to likely get at least a draw against Spain to advance.

Manchester City's potential quadruple went from unlikely to impossible on Sunday with Wigan getting the better of them in the FA Cup for the second year in a row.

Last year's Wigan upset of Manchester City was on neutral ground with European football beckoning for the soon-to-be-relegated club. This season, Wigan upped the ante with a win at the Etihad to knock Manchester City out of the FA Cup at the quarter final stage. James Perch beat Gael Clichy to a ball Clichy should have cleared and scored it early in the second half to give Wigan a 2-0 lead. The underdogs then clung on through a Samir Nasri goal and furious late pressure from City. The big win earns Wigan a semi-final date with Arsenal at Wembley. If only Wigan could play like this against everyone else maybe someone would show up at their matches.

Paul Scharner, apparently not interested in a relegation battle, has reportedly turned down a move back to the Premier League with Hull.

Scharner spent last season at Wigan on loan from Hamburg and apparently didn't enjoy playing first team football for a club bound for relegation. The player has turned down a move to join other Premier League journeymen at Hull in favor of keeping his family settled and likely not seeing any action with Hamburg's first team. Not a ringing endorsement of the Hull "project".

Norwich defender Leon Barnett has joined Owen Coyle's Wigan Athletic.

Norwich are looking to bolster their defensive options, but clearly Chris Hughton doesn't rate Barnett who was loaned to Cardiff City last season.

Swansea, having made their big splash with Wilfried Bony, are looking to bolster their defense with Wigan right back Ronnie Stam.

The Swans are in good shape at right back with Angel Rangel as the starter but they may be looking for a reserve that would allow Jazz Richards - who can deputize at right back - to go out on loan to gain more experience. Stam would be a solid addition as a reserve but shouldn't be counted on to start too much. It has to say something that he didn't start regularly on a team that was relegated.

Former Wigan man Franco Di Santo is in talks with West Bromwich Albion over a potential switch to the Hawthorns.

Current free agent Di Santo would be part of a solution to solidify the Baggies' attacking options beyond Shane Long. With Romelu Lukaku back at Chelsea, Peter Odemwingie fading and wanting out, and Markus Rosenberg ineffective Steve Clarke is desperate for attacking options. Di Santo would be a solid, but definitely not spectacular, move to provide some depth for the West Brom squad. The Baggies would still need to find a leading man to replace Lukaku's goals if the expect to maintain their top half position next season.

Late season star Callum McManaman has been linked with a move to Everton following his former boss Roberto Martinez being installed as the Toffees' new manager.

McManaman had a great run to close the season at Wigan and captured the attention of a lot of clubs looking for a winger/forward. With Nikica Jelavic having failed to replicate his form from the second half of the 2011-12 season, Everton could use another attacking option. This need will increase further if Kevin Mirallas or Marouane Fellaini follow David Moyes out of Goodison.
