Cincinnati redshirt sophomore QB Gunner Kiel completed 29-of-44 passes for 436 yards and four touchdowns on Thursday.

The four touchdowns are great, though his three interceptions off-set those a bit. Kiel had been dealing on-and-off with a rib injury of late, but he looked healthy against East Carolina. His 436 yards passing were a season-high. He showed a nice touch on several deep balls. If he can cut down on the mental mistakes, he has all the physical tools to play the position. The redshirt sophomore has thrown for 2,485 yards this season and has a 24/10 TD/INT ratio.

Cincinnati HC Tommy Tuberville said the team will go with senior QB Munchie Legaux as the school's starter "for a while."

Tuberville said the team needs consistency at the QB position, referring to the same passer working the No. 1s during practice. The head coach added Gunner Kiel will not receive those reps until he is 100 percent healthy. Legaux has a good amount of starting experience, and entered Friday's game in relief to throw three touchdowns.
Nov 1 - 1:03 PM

Cincinnati redshirt sophomore QB Gunner Kiel started Friday's game against Tulane, but promptly left the game following a first play interception after re-injuring his ribs.

Kiel has really struggled to return from the rib issue. He attempted to come back last week against USF, but was forced out at halftime. It did not even take a full series in this one, as Kiel was intercepted on a deep pass and could not continue. Munchie Legaux, who has starting experience, stepped in and played very well. Cincinnati ultimately won the game 38-14.

NFL scouts have been talking about Cincinnati DE/OLB Terrell Hartsfield "for awhile now," reports TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline.

"Hartsfield could well be listed as a sleeper but scouts have been talking about him for a while now," Pauline wrote. "The junior college transfer made few scouting lists entering the season after 23 tackles and 1.5 sacks a year ago. Seven games into the 2014 campaign he’s already registered 6 sacks with 7 tackles for loss. An athletic prospect with natural pass rushing skills, Hartsfield could well sneak into the late rounds if he performs well in pre-draft workouts." The 6-foot-3, 246-pounder is a former four-star recruit who runs a forty in the 4.8-second range.

Cincinnati redshirt sophomore QB Gunner Kiel is considered day-to-day with a rib injury.

There is currently no word on whether Kiel will play this week against Tulane. The injury occurred late in the first half against USF and Kiel was replaced by backup Munchi Legaux for the remainder of the contest. It could be a re-aggravation of an October 4 injury.
Oct 27 - 12:17 PM

Cincinnati redshirt sophomore QB Gunner Kiel completed 13 of 22 attempts for 196 yards and a touchdown versus USF before exiting at halftime with a rib injury.

Kiel has been dealing with a rib injury since the first week of October, and it flared up again in this contest. Kiel added another touchdown on the ground, but his most impressive moments were keeping his eyes up and climbing the pocket. He is just in his first season as a starter, so we do not expect Kiel to contemplate jumping to the NFL. He has made more puzzling decisions before, however.

Cincinnati has placed senior QB Jarred Evans (assault charge) on indefinite suspension.

Evans was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge early Sunday morning for allegedly punching a man, causing a concussion and requiring stitches. "It’s just hard to get through their heads that you are different than everybody else," HC Tommy Tuberville said. "You can’t even think about making a mistake or even being close to a mistake. Even if it’s not your fault, you’re still implicated. So, that’s how we handle it and I hope our players on the team see that and understand that and we’ll go from there." Evans, a backup, may have played his last snap as a Bearcat, though Tuberville stressed that there’s a "[g]ood chance he’s not guilty."

Cincinnati senior QB Jarred Evans was charged with assault.

Evans was booked late Saturday night/early Sunday morning for allegedly punching a man, causing a concussion and requiring stitches. "Coach (Tommy) Tuberville is aware of the incident involving Jarred Evans and is in the process of gathering information," Cincinnati athletics statement said. The incident came only hours after Evans had his best collegiate game, scoring his first touchdown and gaining 67 yards on 10 carries against SMU. Buried on the depth chart, Evans' potential absence wouldn't affect the Bearcats much.

Cincinnati HC Tommy Tuberville essentially ruled out redshirt sophomore QB Gunner Kiel (rib) for Saturday’s game against Miami.

Kiel suffered a rib injury over the weekend against Memphis. "I don’t see him playing," Tuberville said. "He’s not much better than he was. I’m not going to put him out there if he’s not close to 100 percent. If Gunner plays it would be a limited role anyway." Kiel ranks No. 13 in the country in passing yards per game (314.3) and yards per completion (15.33). Munchie Legaux is likely to start, though the staff seems high on junior Jarred Evans.
Oct 8 - 6:29 PM

Cincinnati redshirt sophomore QB Gunner Kiel will be out "a while" after sustaining a rib injury against Memphis, according to HC Tommy Tuberville.

Kiel suffered a chest injury on the final play of the first half and did not return. Tuberville later said Kiel will likely miss the school's upcoming game against Miami, meaning Munchie Legaux will almost certainly start.
Oct 6 - 10:09 AM

Cincinnati redshirt sophomore Gunner Kiel completed 21-of-32 passes for 352 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in a loss to Ohio State over the weekend.

The Bearcats may have gotten stomped, but it was a very good afternoon for Kiel, who officially announced his legitimacy as an NFL prospect. NFL Media Analyst Bucky Brooks wrote last week that Kiel "has shown surprising poise, confidence and awareness in the pocket despite his inexperience at the position," but "has lived up to the hype since stepping onto the field for the Bearcats." CBS Sports' Dane Brugler wrote earlier this month that Kiel is "big and athletic with an above average arm to make all the throws." The 6-foot-4, 208-pound signal-caller has thrown for 1,041 yards and a 14/2 TD/INT ratio in only three games.
Sep 28 - 7:56 PM

NFL Media Analyst Bucky Brooks believes Cincinnati redshirt sophomore Gunner Kiel "will be challenged to fit pinpoint throws into tight windows "against a Buckeyes defense loaded with NFL-caliber athletes" this weekend.

"Kiel will be challenged to fit pinpoint throws into tight windows. If the Bearcats' star can make enough big-time throws to keep his offense on schedule, Cincinnati could pull off a surprising win on the road," Brooks wrote. Brooks adds that, Kiel "has shown surprising poise, confidence and awareness in the pocket despite his inexperience at the position," but "has lived up to the hype since stepping onto the field for the Bearcats." Last week Kiel completed 25-of-39 passes for 271 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in a 31-24 victory over Miami (OH).

Cincinnati freshman walk-on RB Chamoda Kennedy-Palmore passed away Thursday after being involved in a motorcycle accident.

"Kennedy-Palmore was riding his motorcycle and wearing a protective helmet and equipment when he hit the side of a car attempting to turn across two lanes of traffic, according to reports," Fox Sports Ohio Kevin Goheen writes. Kennedy-Palmore recently joined the team following a try out after the season opener against Toledo.

Cincinnati redshirt sophomore Gunner Kiel completed 25-of-39 passes for 271 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in a 31-24 victory over Miami (OH) on Saturday.

Over his first two collegiate games, Kiel is 50-of-76 for 689 yards and a 10/2 TD/INT ratio. Kiel, a brief LSU commitment who began his career at Notre Dame and then transferred, is a controversial prospect due to decisions he made prior to arriving in Ohio. To overcome that chatter, he'll merely have to do things the old fashioned way and perform on the field. "Kiel is big and athletic with an above average arm to make all the throws," CBS Sports' Dane Brugler wrote earlier this month.
Sep 21 - 9:25 PM

NFL.com quoted "a prominent quarterback guru" as wondering if Cincinnati redshirt sophomore Gunner Kiel is most comfortable as a "big fish in a little pond."

The comment refers to Kiel's brief LSU commitment (he reneged) and his eventual transfer out of Notre Dame. We hope the "quarterback guru" knows Kiel personally, because otherwise he's casting an unwarranted aspersion on a player's character prematurely. Kiel was a high schooler when he decided he'd prefer to play at Notre Dame. We don't have an issue with teenagers changing their minds. And he transferred out of Notre Dame not because he demanded more attention by seeking out less talented teammates (a brazenly reckless assertion that doesn't hold up under scrutiny), but because of Everett Golson's emergence. Understanding the reality of a situation speaks to self awareness, and putting yourself in the best possible position to develop (finding playing time elsewhere) speaks to a commitment to craft. Conjecture of this kind is only being made because evaluators don't have enough game film to speak intelligently about his on-field next-level potential yet.
