Falcons signed Cornell QB Jeff Mathews.

Mathews (6-foot-3 3/8, 223) graduated from Cornell as the most prolific passer in Ivy League history, completing 62.3% of his throws with a 72:42 TD-to-INT ratio and nine rushing scores. Mathews' size, big hands (10 1/8"), and powerful arm are plus attributes, but he has little to no mobility (5.26 forty) and too frequently lacks comfort in the pocket, particularly with bodies around him. Mathews is a worthwhile developmental project, but a long shot to develop into more than a quality backup.

Jaguars QB coach Frank Scelfo attended Cornell's pro day to observe Jeff Mathews.

Mathews is nothing more than a sixth- or seventh-round option, but offers plenty of perceived "upside" thanks to a large frame a big arm. He regressed in 2013 behind a bad offensive line, but Mathews could be attributed with a number of sacks and poor decisions. He's a developmental pick.

Cornell's Jeff Mathews, UNC's Bryn Renner and West Texas A&M's Dustin Vaughan will be the three throwing QBs at the NFL Combine.

Including these three, 19 quarterbacks will be in Indianapolis for the Combine. Mathews attended the East-West Shrine game and had a good showing, but his play regressed in 2013 thanks to poor pocket movement combined with bad offensive line. Renner injured his shoulder and was forced to undergo surgery, ending his season early. He must be back to full health.

After speaking with NFL executives, ESPN's Adam Caplan believes Cornell senior QB Jeff Mathews will go between Rounds 5-7.

Sounds about right to us, though Mathews' stock could inhale helium if he blows away evaluators during the draft process. Mathews measured 6-foot-3 and 3 eighths of an inch and weighed in at 225 pounds at the East-West Shrine game. Mathews will continue to look spectacular in shorts -- as he displays accuracy, velocity, and anticipation, as well as Ivy League intelligence -- but his game deteriorates against pressure.

Cornell senior QB Jeff Mathews measured in at 6 feet 3 and 3 eighths of an inch at the East-West Shrine game.

Mathews also weighed in at 225 pounds and had a hand size of 10.38 inches, well above the 9 inch threshold. The Ivy League passer had a great first day, throwing with accuracy, velocity, and anticipation, but his game breaks down against the pass rush, at least in the last two seasons. That type of live action is difficult to simulate in practice, but Mathews is off to a good start.

Cornell senior QB Jeff Mathews will attend the East-West Shrine Game.

Mathews is a big armed, large framed passer who has taken too many sacks this season. He struggles with inconsistent footwork but does flash a few extraordinary passes downfield. Teams will certainly be looking at his lower half during practices.

At least 15 NFL scouts will be on hand to watch Cornell versus Princeton on Saturday.

There are two noteworthy names in this contest, the first being Cornell senior passer Jeff Mathews. The big bodied quarterback has a favorable arm but has spotty footwork and has taken too many sacks this season. On the opposite side, defensive tackle Caraun Reid will likely be a riser during the draft process.

Cornell senior QB Jeff Mathews completed 30 of 46 attempts for 419 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in the school's loss to Brown.

He added another touchdown on the ground. Cornell is on a five game losing streak since winning the season opener against Bucknell. Mathews has had an up and down final season, and one of his biggest weaknesses has been taking sacks, including 15 combined in the last four games. His big arm will be on display throughout the draft process.

12 NFL scouts are in attendance for Cornell's game against Harvard.

We expect many are on hand to check out Cornell senior quarterback Jeff Mathews, a big bodied passer who will draw a draft selection. The only question is how high Mathews can go, and the pre-draft process will likely go a long way in determining that.

Cornell senior QB Jeff Mathews completed 25 of 43 attempts for 336 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 38-23 loss to Yale.

Mathews added a fumble on a sack. There's a lot to like about the Cornell passer, namely his size, big arm, and ability to work downfield, but he has some timing and balance issues in the pocket. This was only Cornell's second game of the season.

Cornell senior QB Jeff Mathews completed 15 of 23 attempts for 285 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-13 win over Bucknell.

This was Mathews' first action of the season, as the Big Red were late to starting on-field action. The senior has a huge arm and flashes pocket movement, but he needs work on his touch, placement, and footwork, with the latter likely being the culprit of most issues. The school's game against Dartmouth on November 9 will be televised on NBC Sports Network.

After speaking with Cornell coaches, SI's Chris Burke called senior QB Jeff Mathews a "student of the game."

"He’s really knowledgeable of the offense, and this is not an easy offense," quarterbacks coach Shane Hurd said. "He can tell exactly where the ball’s gonna go, based on one movement from a defensive player.... He studies more film... he’s here during the summer, up in the offices all the time watching film on his own. He gets it." After studying Mathews' game, our own Josh Norris felt like Mathews' biggest issue was working through progressions while managing the pocket, but the senior has reportedly shown improvement in that area this summer. Don't be surprised to hear his name listed among the top three senior quarterbacks.
Tue, Jun 25, 2013 02:12:00 PM's Gil Brandt believes Cornell's Jeff Mathews is the best non-FBS senior QB.

ESPN's Mel Kiper talked up Mathews last September, so it will be fun to watch his evaluation play out compared to top FBS quarterback prospects. There's a chance Mathews ultimately ends up with a higher grade than former Harvard quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was drafted in the seventh-round.

Packers selected Cornell OL J.C. Tretter with the No. 122 overall pick.

Tretter (6-foot-3 5/8, 307) lettered at tight end his first two seasons before taking over as the Big Red's left tackle and earning unanimous All-Ivy League first-team honors as a senior. Heady and athletic but somewhat short armed (33 3/8"), Tretter is likely destined for the interior line. Despite breaking his nose just prior to the Senior Bowl, Tretter participated in the event. The Packers do have a history of success with mid to late round offensive linemen.

National Football Post's Dan Pompei reports Cornell T J.C. Tretter is being looked at as a G by NFL teams.

"He has the quick feet for a guard and upside to improve," Pompei was told by an executive. Tretter is a former quarterback and tight end that played tackle in college, which makes the move very intriguing.
