San Jose State redshirt sophomore WR Bailey Gaither caught eight passes for 125 yards and a touchdown in a 54-16 loss to Utah.

If there's been one constant in the San Jose State offense, it's been Gaither (6'1/183). He was the one Spartan who looked like he belonged on the field with Utah on Saturday, especially on his 47-yard touchdown from Josh Love to bring SJSU to within 17 at 30-13 with 46 seconds left in the first half. The Spartans have played a brutal schedule but Gaither has still produced. He should put up even bigger numbers once conference play begins.

San Jose State redshirt freshman QB Montel Aaron will start against Texas on Saturday.

Josh Love started for the Spartans against South Florida in their season-opener, but it was Aaron who saw almost all of the work in their win over Cal Poly this past weekend. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder completed 11-of-17 passes for 183 yards and a trio of touchdowns in the victory.

San Jose State redshirt freshman QB Montel Aaron completed 11-of-17 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 34-13 win over Cal Poly.

The Spartans trotted out redshirt sophomore QB Josh Love to start the season-opener against South Florida last week, but opted to turn to Aaron for Saturday's contest. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder took a little while to settle in -- San Jose State did not score in the first quarter -- before he connected on an 18-yard touchdown pass to JaQuan Blackwell with 9:18 remaining before halftime. After the teams emerged from their respective locker rooms for the third quarter, he would go on to toss two more touchdown passes to slowly salt the game away. San Jose State will tango with Texas next weekend. Our money would be on Aaron to start that contest over Love.

ESPN's Mel Kiper ranks San Jose State junior Josh Oliver as the class' No. 5 underclassmen tight end.

Oliver caught five passes for 51 yards in last week's opener against USF. He didn't see much action in the passing game the past few seasons, but that'll change in San Jose State's new pass-happy scheme. Expect a breakout campaign.

San Jose State redshirt sophomore WR Bailey Gaither caught six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 42-22 loss to USF.

Gaither (6'1/183) was an immediate statistical beneficiary from San Jose State's shift to the Air Raid. He hauled in a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter and averaged a smooth 16.7 yards per reception for the game as a whole. A year ago, Bailey caught just four passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. He'll try to build on Saturday's strong performance when the Spartans take on Cal Poly next weekend.
Aug 26 - 11:42 PM

San Jose State redshirt sophomore QB Josh Love completed 18-of-36 passes for 192 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in Saturday's 42-22 loss to USF.

Love and the Spartans put a scare into USF in the first quarter, taking an early 16-0 lead after a pair of touchdown passes by Love. The Bulls would go on to outscore San Jose State 42-6 the rest of the way. Once the game started to get away from Love and company, Montel Aaron took over at quarterback and finished out completing 7-of-18 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. Both quarterbacks figure to continue to see work to varying degrees early in the season. San Jose State will take on Cal Poly next Saturday as they look for their first victory of the campaign.
Aug 26 - 11:41 PM

San Jose State redshirt sophomore QB Josh Love drew the start in Saturday's game against USF.

Love (6'2/205) drew the start over Montel Aaron. In five games last season, he threw for 392 yards (51.7% completions) with a 2/5 TD/INT ratio.

San Jose State junior Malik Roberson sat out the spring game with an ankle sprain.

Roberson was the team's leading rusher with 508 yards last year. He and Zamore Zigler, both diminutive scat running backs, rushed for 931 yards combined last season. They'll divvy carries again in 2017, capping Roberson's fantasy upside.

San Jose State redshirt junior S Chad Miller is recovering from surgery after being stabbed.

Miller was not initially involved in the altercation but wound up being stabbed and was declared to be in critical condition at the hospital. No arrests have been made at this time.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline believes San Jose State DE/OLB Isaiah Irving could vie for a roster spot this summer.

"Irving is an intense and explosive pass rusher who can bend off the edge with speed and is relentless chasing down the quarterback or ball handlers," he wrote. "He was effective out of a three-point stance as well as standing over tackle." Irvin was an honorable mention All-Mountain West pick last season after ranking third in the Mountain West in sacks per game (0.58). "Irving has size deficiencies and must impress on special teams this summer, yet I could see someone taking a liking to him as a designated pass rusher," Pauline wrote.

Earlier this week, San Jose State WR Tim Crawley was interviewed by the Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons.

The diminutive 5-foot-7, 169-pounder had 55 receptions for 648 yards last season. He can also play out of the backfield and return kicks.

San Jose State hired Arizona State DL coach Joe Seumalo to serve in the same capacity.

Seumalo was initially hired by the Sun Devils last February. Prior to that gig, he worked at UNLV during the 2015 campaign. The bulk of his coaching experience came at Oregon State, where he served on staff for nine seasons. At San Jose State, he replaces Jamar Cain, who has moved on to coach up the defensive line at Fresno State.

San Jose State signed three-star JUCO LB/S Jamal Scott.

Scott began his career at Arizona State as a lauded prospect. When things didn't work out there, he transferred to Fullerton College, where he had 49 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 quarterback sacks last season. Scott now has two years of eligibility remaining.

Sports Illustrated gave San Jose State an "A" grade for hiring Oregon State wide receivers coach Brent Brennan as HC.

Only two other "A" grades were handed out by SI; Purdue for hiring Jeff Brohm and USF for hiring Charlie Strong. The 43-year old Brennan was an assistant at SJSU from 2005-2010. With the Beavers, he coached All-American wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Markus Wheaton. Scout ranked Brennan's first class as head boss No. 5 in the Mountain West behind Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State and Fresno State.

FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman reports that San Jose State will hire Texas WR coach Andrew Sowder to serve as offensive coordinator.

Texas initially brought Sowder in as WR coach this past August. Having previously spent time at Baylor and under Dino Babers at Bowling Green, he figures to attempt to implement a similar high-flying offensive attack with the Spartans. San Jose State averaged a modest 24.42 points during the 2016 campaign.
