Cameron Clear dismissed from team three days following arrest.

Clear was caught with a stolen laptop and charged with felony theft on Tuesday. Coach Derek Dooley suspended Clear indefinitely before deciding the tight end could no longer be part of the team. Clear was expected to have a much more substantial role in the offense in 2012 as the No. 2 tight end behind Mychal Rivera. The 6-foot-6, 283-pounder caught one pass last season.

Getting fully back into game shape could go beyond the physical aspects for Knile Davis.

Knowing Davis was held out of contact drills this spring, coach John L. Smith acknowledged a major hurdle in the running back’s recovery process will be how he handles absorbing a couple of hits. Smith wasn’t referring entirely to the physical aspects of taking a pounding, but how Davis responds mentally. After all, coming off a lost season due to a fractured ankle, it would be natural for him to be tentative in hitting the line and looking for the holes.

Coach Todd Graham said Mike Bercovici has a slight edge at quarterback heading into preseason drills.

The edge is simply due to experience. As a freshman, Bercovici was the primary backup to Brock Osweiler last season and is the only one of the three competing quarterbacks (Michael Eubank and Taylor Lewis) to have thrown a pass in a college game. At that, Bercovici has just three attempts.

Michigan would like to utilize quarterback Devin Gardner in packages with him and Denard Robinson on the field together.

Gardner made significant strides during the spring, said OC Al Borges. Gardner is a very talented athlete that the coaching staff would like to see take the field alongside Robinson at times. Gardner, who will be a junior in the fall, threw for 176 yards with one TD and ran for 53 yards and a score last season.

Trey Holtz, son of USF coach Skip, will attend Texas starting next week where his is a preferred walk-on.

Trey Holtz won’t be battling David Ash and Case McCoy in preseason camp. Rather, he simply hopes to get on the field at some point and that would likely be in a special teams role. Skip played at Notre Dame and grandfather Lou played at Kent State.

Duplicating his 2011 totals for receptions and yardage will land Tracy Moore in the top 10 for both categories at Oklahoma State.

A season after catching 45 passes for 672 yards, Moore will take Justin Blackmon’s spot at outside receiver. While new faces have to mesh on offense, one would think a healthy season would result in increased productivity as the new No. 1 receiver. Merely matching those numbers would vault Moore into the program’s top 10. That says a lot about the offensive system and certainly QB Brandon Weeden, who has moved on. Moore has certainly done his job, too.

Cameron Clear was caught with a stolen laptop and charged with felony theft.

After catching only one pass last season, Clear was expected to have a much more substantial role in the offense in 2012 as the No. 2 tight end behind Mychal Rivera. The 6-foot-6, 283-pound Clear will be a sophomore.

With Rob Bolden talking transfer, Steven Bench is aiming to be part of the mix at QB.

Bolden talked transfer before under Joe Paterno, but the way things are going it is not likely he will be around for Bill O’Brien’s first season in Happy Valley. That could open the door for Steven Bench on the depth chart. Shane McGregor is listed as the No. 3 quarterback behind Matt McGloin and Paul Jones, but Bench, a freshman who arrives on campus this summer, is intent on getting some meaningful reps in preseason practice.

Work ethic has helped lead Mike James to the top of Miami’s depth chart at running back.

James has not lacked for work ethic in the weight room, that’s for sure. His physical conditioning combined with improving his footwork and familiarity with the offense has provided James with not only an opportunity to climb the ladder at RB, but also serve as a key figure on the team. James, who will be a senior, rushed for 275 yards and 7 touchdowns last season giving him 719/11 for his career.

Following Asher Clark's dismissal from the academy, his father spoke out about how he feels the academy has made an example of his son.

Clark thought he was smoking tobacco and not another substance that was in violation of the academy’s rules. His dismissal took place mere days prior to his scheduled graduation and his father feels Clark is being made an example in what is a zero-tolerance academy policy. Clark completed his playing eligibility last season as the program’s second-leading career rusher with 3,594 yards.

O.J. Ross is on his way to re-joining the Boilermakers.

Ross found it difficult to find his way to class, but he appears to be on the right path both academically and, as a result, to again contribute on the field. Ross, whose academic issues resulted in his being suspended for last year’s Little Caesars Bowl, caught 33 passes for 356 yards and 3 TDs in 2011. He will have junior eligibility in the fall.
