UAB received a verbal commitment from three-star 2017 LB Thomas Johnston.

Scout.com's Chad Simmons called this perhaps the biggest 2017 recruiting surprise in the South to date. Johnston opted for the Blazers over fellow finalists Arkansas, Iowa and Ole Miss. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder already has a family connection with UAB, as his brother, Tyler Johnston, is a quarterback at the school. Simmons refers to the linebacker as a "tackling machine."

UAB signee RB D.J. Law has not yet academically qualified.

"He's one of those that I would say it's a wait and see," UAB head coach Bill Clark said. "He's finishing up a class or two." Law's academic issues at East Mississippi Community College were featured prominently on the outstanding Netflix Series "Last Chance U." Netflix recently renewed the series for a second season. Hopefully Law gives us more good news by squaring away his course work in time to take part in UAB's triumphant return next fall.

UAB promoted DL coach David Reeves to defensive coordinator.

Reeves steps in for Duwan Walker, who is resigning from the position to enter the private business sector. HC Bill Clark said, "David Reeves has been with me for a while and my defensive staff has been with me for a while. We have one spot to replace. I wish Duwan the best and he's going to be terrific in what he's doing next." The Blazers have faced a bit of coaching turnover in recent weeks, with OL coach Mike Bennefield also stepping aside back in May. Strength and conditioning coach Trey Clark (no relation to HC Bill Clark) took over Bennefield's old post.

AL.com's Drew Champlin reports that UAB will promote head football strength and conditioning coach Trey Clark to offensive line coach.

Clark -- no relation to UAB HC Bill Clark -- had been coaching up Jacksonville State's offensive line for the past two seasons before he joined up with the Blazers for strength and conditioning duties earlier this offseason. His stint at that post turned out to be a short one, as the squad needed a new OL coach after Mike Bennefield (citing family and personal reasons) stepped down from the position in May.

USF redshirt sophomore LB Nick Holman transferred to UAB.

"It's close to home and it's a family atmosphere. It was a good fit," Holman said. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder appeared in 11 games last season, playing mostly on special teams while recording five tackles in limited action on defense. He will have to sit out the 2016 season, but will have two years of eligibility left to his good name come the start of the 2017 campaign.

UAB signed JUCO G Natrell Curtis.

Curtis was a three-star recruit for the 2014 cycle. He was initially slated to join Oklahoma before instead opting to head down the junior college route by linking up with Pima Community College. The 6-foot-3, 335-pounder was named an Army All-American coming out of high school.

Chattanooga redshirt junior TE Steve Pickren transferred to UAB.

Pickren is the most recent of several former Blazers who have transferred back to UAB following the program's decision to re-institute its disbanded football program. "Just look forward to helping the team any way I can," Pickren said. "I love and respect everyone at UTC, but I’ve never had a better coach than Coach [Bill] Clark. So excited to play for him and the Blazers again." Pickren was deployed primarily as a blocking tight end in his 13 games for the Mocs last year. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Pickren also has experience at fullback, offensive line and defensive line. He'll battle Chett Levay and Tariq Ballard for playing time next summer. Pickren's last season of eligibility will take place in 2017, the year UAB returns to the field.

Buffalo junior WR Collin Lisa transferred to UAB.

The slot receiver began his career at UAB but transferred to Buffalo in early 2015 after UAB dropped its football program. Now that the Blazers have gotten the band back together -- they will re-take the field in 2017 -- Lisa is returning. "It really wasn’t anything to do with Buffalo, just more of me wanting to be where I originally wanted to play my college career," Lisa said. "I wish my bros and the coaches up there the best. . . . I appreciate all the people from Buffalo welcoming me and taking me in like I was one of their own." Lisa, who had 31 receptions for 325 yards and two touchdowns last year, has two years of eligibility left.

UAB OL coach Mike Bennefield resigned on Wednesday.

Bennefield is resigning, in part, because he would like to spend more time with his family. "Coach has got the foundation going the right way," he said. "As for me personally, I needed more time with the family. I missed it." For his part, HC Bill Clark positively gushed with positive vibes over Bennefield's contribution, saying, "Our kids love him. That's been a hallmark of him, he can get so much out of those kids. It's a thankless job, but he's got such a great temperament with those guys."

UAB redshirt junior RB Greg Bryant passed away after being shot in his car on Saturday.

Bryant and another man were found shot in his car on the side of the interstate on Saturday morning. The 5-foot-11, 197-pounder was taken to the hospital and remained in critical condition through the day. An early report claimed that he passed away on Saturday afternoon, but Bryant was a fighter and held on for several hours after that initial report. Formerly of Notre Dame, the running back committed to UAB in November after academic issues prevented him from remaining with the Irish. Our condolences to the Bryant family in this trying time.

Updating a developing story, the West Palm Beach Police confirmed that UAB redshirt junior RB Greg Bryant is still in critical condition following a Saturday morning shooting.

This runs contrary to an earlier report that Bryant had passed away. He and a passenger were found shot in a vehicle on the side of the interstate early Saturday morning. This is a developing story and more information should become available in the coming hours. We sincerely hope our next update on Bryant is a positive one.

UAB redshirt junior RB Greg Bryant is in critical condition after being shot in his car on Saturday morning.

Bryant and another man were found shot in the vehicle around 4:45 Saturday morning. At this juncture, there is no lead as to the perpetrator of the crime, nor any motive. While Bryant's passenger only suffered minor injury, the 5-foot-11, 197-pound redshirt junior is currently in critical condition. Academic issues caused him to leave the Fighting Irish for JUCO ball in 2015 and he subsequently committed to UAB in November.

UAB began practicing for the 2017 football season.

HC Bill Clark and the Blazers don't officially return until 2017, but they'll be preparing up until then. The program disbanded in December 2014 and didn't play last year. After sitting out this coming campaign as well, UAB will return from the two-year hiatus with a home game against FCS foe Alabama A&M on Sept. 2, 2017. Later that month, they begin Conference USA in-league play. UAB had a shockingly productive National Signing Day earlier this month.

The UA System Board of Trustees approved a proposal for a $15 million turf field and football facility at UAB.

Measuring at 46,000 square feet, the proposed facility would include locker rooms, weight rooms and administrative offices (among other amenities). On a possibly optimistic timeline, construction would be completed by the summer of 2017. Said AD Mark Ingram, "Do the stars need to align a little bit? Yes, but so far they are. We feel great about the design efforts." UAB's looking to raise the money for the facility via pledges.

UAB announced its non-conference schedule for the 2017 season.

After what will have been a two-year football hiatus, UAB returns to the field Sept. 2 of that year against Alabama A&M of the FCS. After that, UAB will play Ball State and Coastal Carolina in back-to-back road games. Lastly, UAB travels to The Swamp to play Florida on Nov. 18. "We are unbelievably excited about UAB Football’s return to the field in 2017 and look forward to great competition with this slate of non-conference games," head coach Bill Clark. "This type of schedule, in addition to eight highly-competitive Conference USA contests, will provide Blazer fans with great entertainment. We look forward to playing in front of record crowds as UAB Football represents Birmingham and the Blazer Nation!" We were baffled while following the bizarre disbanding of the UAB program in December of 2014 and are happy that the folks in Birmingham are getting their team back.
