UAB freshman RB Spencer Brown ran for 167 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries in a 25-23 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Saturday.

Brown (6'0/235) has gone over 160 yards in two straight games for the Blazers, and is both the future and present for the UAB offense. His touchdown from eight yards out gave the Blazers a 16-10 lead, and he had another 52 yarder to set up another score. The surprising 4-2 Blazers get a date with Charlotte next.

UAB freshman RB Spencer brown ran for 165 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries in a 23-22 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

Brown (6'0/235) was the UAB offense on Saturday, and was the chief reason why the Blazers were able to pull off the upset against the Bulldogs. His touchdown was an 11-yard scamper to give UAB a 13-0 lead late in the first quarter. Brown will look to go over 100 again next week against Middle Tennessee State.
Oct 7 - 7:20 PM

UAB freshman RB Spencer Brown ran for 51 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 16 carries in Saturday's 30-23 win over Coastal Carolina.

Meet the face of the new-look Blazers, who have returned to the field following a two-year hiatus to start 2-1. Brown (6'0/235) is a pure bruiser who loves contact. He's rushed for 244 yards and three scores through three games. Don't look now, but UAB is within four wins of going bowling with only one Power 5 opponent (at Florida) remaining on the schedule.
Sep 16 - 6:08 PM

UAB HC Bill Clark called freshman RB Spencer Brown "a tough guy to take down."

"He's still got to work on the blocking and protection and they've all got to work on ball security," Clark said. "It's exciting. That's a physical running back. We have seen him run over our own guys in practice." Brown (6'0/235) had his coming out party against Ball State on Saturday, when he blew up for 151 yards while averaging 8.9 YPC. He'll have a chance to build on that performance when the Blazers host Coastal Carolina this weekend.

UAB freshman Carlos Stephens ran for 76 yards on 15 carries in Saturday's 38-7 win over Alabama A&M.

Welcome back, Blazers. UAB ran a run-first offense in its return to the field. That worked against A&M -- to the tune of 259 yards and a pair of touchdowns -- but will be a bit tougher against next week's opponent Ball State. James Noble III had 13 carries for 74 yards in this one. We'd expect him to have more carries than Stephens in the coming weeks.
Sep 2 - 7:07 PM

UAB senior quarterback A.J. Erdely will start UAB's first game on Saturday against Alabama A&M.

Erdely was reportedly pushed by redshirt freshman Tyler Johnston, but the fifth-year senior's leadership since he came to UAB made it an easy decision for Blazers' coach Bill Clark. A 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior, Erdley last played for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he threw for 1881 yards and 14 touchdowns. It's going to be a long year for the Blazers, but it's nice to have a little stability at the position, at least for 2017.

Former Tennessee redshirt freshman DE Mykelle McDaniel has joined UAB.

McDaniel will be sidelined in 2017 due to transfer rules, meaning he will have missed two seasons of football since high school after redshirting his only season at Tennessee.

UAB redshirt junior WR Collin Lisa had five receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown in UAB's spring game last month.

Lisa appears to be headed into summer camp as the Blazers' No. 1 receiver. A slot receiver by trade, Lisa began his career at UAB but transferred to Buffalo for a year when the Blazers' football program dissolved after the 2014 season. The 5-foot-10, 173-pounder caught 31 passes for 325 yards for Buffalo in 2015 and then transferred back to UAB upon the re-booting of the program last May. "He's gotten so much better since (2014), but he's a great route-runner," HC Bill Clark said. "He catches everything. ... We're a little limited at receiver right now. We had a couple of guys who were out and some guys are coming this summer, but I was pleased and especially pleased with him."

UAB signee RB D.J. Law is no longer with the program.

A star on last summer's hit Netflix documentary 'Last Chance U,' Law signed with UAB over Louisville, Ole Miss and West Virginia upon leaving JUCO powerhouse East Mississippi Community College. Law's academic eligibility remains an issue, as does a knee injury he's currently nursing. UAB head coach Bill Clark said Law will likely keep playing football, either at the NAIA level or professionally in Canada.

UAB received a verbal commitment from three-star 2017 LB Thomas Johnston.

Scout.com's Chad Simmons called this perhaps the biggest 2017 recruiting surprise in the South to date. Johnston opted for the Blazers over fellow finalists Arkansas, Iowa and Ole Miss. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder already has a family connection with UAB, as his brother, Tyler Johnston, is a quarterback at the school. Simmons refers to the linebacker as a "tackling machine."

UAB signee RB D.J. Law has not yet academically qualified.

"He's one of those that I would say it's a wait and see," UAB head coach Bill Clark said. "He's finishing up a class or two." Law's academic issues at East Mississippi Community College were featured prominently on the outstanding Netflix Series "Last Chance U." Netflix recently renewed the series for a second season. Hopefully Law gives us more good news by squaring away his course work in time to take part in UAB's triumphant return next fall.

Uncommitted three-star 2016 DE Mykelle McDaniel signed with Tennessee.

McDaniel just recently received the academic all-clear from the NCAA, hence why his signing came so close to August camp. South Carolina and Texas A&M were among those pursuing his eventual signature. Scout.com's team notes that the 6-foot-4, 255-pounder is "[n]ot elite in one phase on the defensive line, but [offers] solid play against the run and the pass." The outlet graded him as the No. 9 overall prospect in the state of Georgia for the 2016 cycle.

UAB promoted DL coach David Reeves to defensive coordinator.

Reeves steps in for Duwan Walker, who is resigning from the position to enter the private business sector. HC Bill Clark said, "David Reeves has been with me for a while and my defensive staff has been with me for a while. We have one spot to replace. I wish Duwan the best and he's going to be terrific in what he's doing next." The Blazers have faced a bit of coaching turnover in recent weeks, with OL coach Mike Bennefield also stepping aside back in May. Strength and conditioning coach Trey Clark (no relation to HC Bill Clark) took over Bennefield's old post.

AL.com's Drew Champlin reports that UAB will promote head football strength and conditioning coach Trey Clark to offensive line coach.

Clark -- no relation to UAB HC Bill Clark -- had been coaching up Jacksonville State's offensive line for the past two seasons before he joined up with the Blazers for strength and conditioning duties earlier this offseason. His stint at that post turned out to be a short one, as the squad needed a new OL coach after Mike Bennefield (citing family and personal reasons) stepped down from the position in May.

USF redshirt sophomore LB Nick Holman transferred to UAB.

"It's close to home and it's a family atmosphere. It was a good fit," Holman said. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder appeared in 11 games last season, playing mostly on special teams while recording five tackles in limited action on defense. He will have to sit out the 2016 season, but will have two years of eligibility left to his good name come the start of the 2017 campaign.
