Date:

Louisiana-Lafayette junior RB Jalen Nixon (foot) will miss the start of spring drills.

Nixon's currently recovering from a recent foot surgery. He'll miss the start of spring practice at the very least and it's possible he'll be held out of spring work altogether depending on how his recovery progresses. The 6-foot-2, 226-pounder's in a tough spot here, as the sometime-quarterback has been working to transition to running back full-time for the 2016 campaign. Work this spring would probably have helped to smooth that transition. Last season, he rushed for 406 yards (6.7 YPC on 61 carries) while scoring five touchdowns.

The NCAA has ruled that UL-Lafayette will be forced to forfeit 22 games (including two bowl wins) from 2011-2014 due to coaches falsifying ACT scores for five recruits.

It should be said upfront, while this is obviously a stinging blow to the program, current HC Mark Hudspeth is free of blame. No, the man who's brought all this about is former assistant coach David Saunders, whom the NCAA determined "violated NCAA rules by arranging fraudulent college entrance exam scores for five prospects." In addition to vacating 22 contests (including New Orleans Bowl wins in 2011 and 2013), the NCAA has levied additional penalties, including a two-year probation period as well as tightened recruiting restrictions.
Mar 3 - 1:04 PM

Louisiana-Lafayette junior RB Elijah McGuire will join the Ragin' Cajun basketball team for the remainder of the season.

McGuire announced last week that he would return to school after briefly considering NFL declaration. Following that, it's a bit odd that the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year now wants to dabble in a different sport, but to each their own. McGuire was a standout prep guard at Vandebilt Catholic High School. He has football coach Mark Hudspeth's blessing. "Eli ... feels like he can be an asset to the men’s basketball program ... Eli and our basketball program has our full support," Hudspeth said. McGuire has 3,174 career rushing yards, posting 1,047 yards in 2015, 1,264 in 2014 and 863 as a true freshman in 2013. Had he declared for the NFL, McGuire may have been a fifth- or sixth-round pick.

Louisiana-Lafayette junior RB/QB Jalen Nixon will transition to running back full-time in 2016.

Said HC Mark Hudspeth, "[Nixon] loves playing for the Ragin’ Cajuns. I really hope he’s going to be an asset to us back there [running the ball], because he’s a very talented young man. I’m sure it will take a little while to get comfortable there, but he’s an athlete." Nixon started four games at quarterback in 2015, ultimately finishing with 828 passing yards and a 7/5 TD/INT ratio. The 6-foot-2, 226-pound junior also rushed for 406 yards (6.7 YPC average) and five touchdowns on 61 carries. Expect those rushing numbers to increase in 2016, as he'll be toting the rock full time and leaving the quarterbacking to redshirt sophomore Jordan Davis and freshman Chris Weaver. Those two will be duking it out in the spring for starting rights.

Louisiana-Lafayette junior RB Elijah McGuire announced he is returning to school for the 2016 season.

McGuire "tested the waters" and requested an evaluation from the advisory board before announcing his return. McGuire is a very intriguing, yet overlooked, prospect and should receive plenty of attention heading into next year. He produced over 1,000 yards rushing in two straight seasons.

Louisiana-Lafayette senior G Donovan Williams accepted an invitation to the NFLPA Bowl.

Williams started each of the past two seasons for the Ragin' Cajuns after transferring over from Blinn College. Star ULL RB Elijah McGuire appreciated his service.

Louisiana-Lafayette junior RB Elijah McGuire is "testing the waters" over a potential declaration into the 2016 NFL Draft, says Ragin’ Cajuns coach Mark Hudspeth.

McGuire requested an evaluation from the NFL Draft Advisory Board. "He is submitting his name," Hudspeth said. "He is gonna do that, and evaluate that, and sort of see where he falls." McGuire has rushed for over 1,000 yards in two straight seasons and won last year’s Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year award. CBS ranks McGuire as the No. 15 RB prospect for 2017.

Louisiana-Lafayette junior S T.J. Worthy will miss Saturday's game against Northwestern State due to a shoulder injury.

Worthy suffered the bum wing in last week's loss to Kentucky. Said HC Mark Hudspeth, "When you get your shoulder hurting, you don’t want to hit nobody." The injury isn't considered serious, though, as Hudspeth predicted that the 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior would be able to play in a September 26 date with Akron. Last season, Worthy worked as both a linebacker and a defensive back while playing in 12 games (seven starts) and recording 41 tackles and an interception.

ULL redshirt senior DE/LB Dominique Tovell recorded five tackles for loss in the school's 40-33 loss to Kentucky.

Tovell does not have age on his side in terms of earning an "upside" tag, but he certainly started his final campaign on a high note. ULL was very close to upsetting Kentucky. We are always on the lookout for rising edge rushers and will check on Tovell's production as the season goes on. He recorded 21 TFLs over the last two seasons.

Despite last year's injury-riddled campaign, NFL Media draft analyst Chad Reuter promises that "scouts won't forget about [Louisiana-Lafayette redshirt senior WR Jamal Robinson's] skills heading into this year."

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior only played in three games (15 catches for 260 yards and four touchdowns) last year, injuring his meniscus versus Louisiana Tech on Sept. 6 and then hurting his foot against Texas State. Those injuries prompted the NCAA to grant a fifth year of eligibility through a medical hardship waiver. "Robinson uses his strength and strider's speed to win down the sideline, but has enough foot quickness to stutter-step and run the quick out to complement the deep ball," Reuter wrote. "A healthy and consistent 2015 should shoot him up draft boards." Robinson averaged 16 yards per catch and scored eight times in 2013.

Mississippi State redshirt sophomore WR Shelby Christy will transfer to ULL.

Christy redshirted his first season at Miss State and did not see game action during his second. The former three-star recruit is from Louisiana.

Packers selected Lousiana-Lafayette DE Christian Ringo with the No. 210 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Ringo (6'1/293) was the 2014 Louisiana Sportswriters Association Defensive Player of the Year, piling up 20 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks. Snubbed for invites to major pre-draft events, Ringo showed NFL-quality movement skills at his Pro Day by running 4.97 with a 29-inch vertical and 9-foot-5 broad jump. Ringo's combination of athleticism and production suggests he has a good chance to become a contributor as a three-technique pass rusher.

UL-Lafayette DT Christian Ringo "might only ever be a sub-package player in the NFL, but he has the potential to be a very good one," wrote Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus.

"He can be overpowered, which isn't surprising given his size (6-1, 277), but his first step is often too good for opposing offensive linemen to handle," McGuinness wrote. "That led to him having a pass-rushing productivity rating of 15.8 from the 238 pass-rushing snaps he played at 3-4 defensive end last season, the highest in the nation." We're happy to see Ringo get some love, as we enjoyed his work in the admittedly limited Ragin' Cajun action we took in this season. Ringo set ULL's single-season sack record in 2014 with 11.5 and also tied a school record with his 21st career sack. "He's particularly impressive rushing the passer from the nose tackle spot, where his first step beat plenty of centers in 2014, but he likely won't hear his name called early in the draft," McGuinness wrote. "However, in the right system, he has the potential to be productive early in his career." Ringo will either be a Day 3 pick or a priority UDFA.

Louisiana-Lafayette senior QB Terrance Broadway will play in Saturday's Medal of Honor Bowl.

Broadway won't get drafted, but it'll be fun to see him man the quarterback position one more time. The three-year starter told reporters that he is working exclusively as a quarterback at the Medal of Honor Bowl. Broadway passed Jake Delhomme to become the Cajuns’ all-time leader in total yards this season. He will have to switch positions to have any chance of making the NFL.

UL-Lafayette senior DT Christian Ringo wrote himself into the school's record book by recording a sack in a 16-3 win over Nevada in the New Orleans Bowl on Saturday morning.

With his sack on the second-to-last play of the game, Ringo set ULL's single-season sack record with 11.5, and also tied a school record with his 21st career sack. He's been highly productive throughout his career, but NFL scouts have thus far turned up noses at his 6-foot-1, 275-pound frame. At the very least, Ringo will have a chance to earn his way onto an NFL roster via a UDFA post-draft contract.
