Date:

Louisiana-Monroe sophomore QB Caleb Evans will remain the starter for the Warhawks on Saturday, coach Mike Viator announced on Monday.

Evans (6'2/210) struggled against Georgia State and was replaced in the third quarter by backup Garrett Smith. While Smith was able to play well, much of it came with the game no longer in doubt, and Evans has shown flashes of competence as his time as the starter for ULL. Expect the leash to be short, so Smith could get time again if Evans struggles.
Oct 16 - 7:44 PM

Louisiana-Monroe redshirt junior QB Garrett Smith completed 14-of-23 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 47-37 loss to Georgia State.

This was Smith's first extended action of the season -- he took over for an ineffective Caleb Evans in the contest -- and he played well enough with the opportunity. While he did show out nicely on Saturday, the 6-foot, 211-pounder will probably return to his backup role against South Alabama next weekend. Evans has played respectable (if mostly unspectacular) ball this year.
Oct 14 - 9:21 PM

UL-Monroe sophomore DT Tyler Johnson (ankle) is expected to play against Georgia State this weekend.

Johnson was limited to six plays total at Texas State last week due to the injury. He's listed as the starter at nose tackle for this weekend's game. After playing a season at Coffeyville Community College, Johnson was two-star JUCO recruit in this past cycle by Rivals.

UL-Monroe junior WR Markis McCray was listed as the backup to Marcus Green at Z receiver on this week's depth chart.

McCray didn't make the trip to Texas State due to an unlisted injury. He's expected to play against Georgia State on Saturday.

Louisiana-Monroe redshirt junior RB Derrick Gore (foot) is probable this week for Georgia State.

Gore hurt his foot during practice last week. He was limited in last week's win against Texas State. Gore is listed as the starter on this week's depth chart, so we expect him to be able to give it a go.

Oct 13 - 11:17 AM

Louisiana-Monroe sophomore QB Caleb Evans went for 24-for-37 for 433 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-27 victory over Texas State on Saturday.

He also ran for 12 yards and another score. Evans had an off-week last Saturday against Coastal Carolina, but he threw for 343 yards, ran for 129 yards and had six total scores the week before against Louisiana-Lafayette. He could be in line for another big day next week against Georgia State.
Oct 7 - 6:30 PM

Louisiana-Monroe redshirt-junior Derrick Gore scored two touchdowns and ran for 74 yards on 22 carries in a 51-43 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday.

Gore (5'11/210) didn't have a huge day in terms of yards-per-carry, but that YPC was hurt by the fact that converted several short-yardage plays. One of those plays was a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the WarHawks a 45-30 lead, with the other score coming in the second quarter from 10 yards out. The former Alabama Crimson Tide transfer and LMU will go up against Texas State next.
Sep 30 - 10:59 PM

Louisiana-Monroe sophomore QB Caleb Evans threw for 343 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 129 yards and five scores in a 56-50 double-overtime victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday.

Evans (6'2/210) took advantage of a woeful Lafayette defense, to be certain, but this is still a very impressive game for the sophomore quarterback. He was efficient between the 20s with no turnovers, and then inside the red zone he uses his legs to burn the Ragin' Cajuns for the scores. After struggling in his first two starts, it's nice to see Evans so effective, even if it was against one of the worst defenses in college football.
Sep 23 - 9:26 PM

Louisiana-Monroe redshirt junior WR Marcus Green caught two passes for 72 yards in the team's spring game.

The bulk of Green's receiving yardage came on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Evans. The 5-foot-8, 190-pound redshirt junior logged a 36-344-4 receiving line last season, a noticeable step down from the 62-687-6 line he posted in 2015. At least some of that drop can probably be attributed to the fact that the Warhawks dealt with a level of quarterback uncertainty last season, having to shift over to true freshman Evans after Garrett Smith went down injured midway through the campaign.
Jul 10 - 6:46 PM

Louisiana-Monroe redshirt junior QB Garrett Smith (lower-body injury) remained sidelined this spring.

He's expected to be healthy for the start of fall camp. Across eight 2016 games, Smith threw for 1,237 yards and nine touchdowns while running for 308 yards and three more scores. He's hoping to improve his completion percentage (57 percent) and cut down on his interceptions (seven) this fall, but first Smith will have to win back his starting job. "I think the job is definitely up for grabs," Smith said. "We all want to be the starter no doubt, but it’s a friendly competition and we’re all trying to make each other better."
May 19 - 12:23 PM

Alabama redshirt junior RB Derrick Gore transferred to Louisiana-Monroe.

Gore has enrolled in classes at ULM and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2017 season. The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder was never able to truly climb into Alabama's ever-constant churn of a running back rotation. He saw just 24 carries in his two active years with the Tide. He spun those totes of the rock into 108 yards (4.5 YPC) and a touchdown. Gore will compete for carries with incumbent starting RB Ben Luckett now that he has joined ULM.
Jan 20 - 5:47 PM

Alabama redshirt junior RB Derrick Gore will transfer.

Buried deep down the most stacked running back depth chart you'll ever see at the collegiate level, Gore had 18 rushes for 93 yards and a touchdown this season to average 5.2 yards per carry. None of the five rushers who had more yards than him are graduating or expected to leave, and the Tide recently landed No. 1 overall recruit RB Najee Harris.

Louisiana-Monroe junior RB Kaylon Watson will transfer.

Watson announced his decision via Twitter, writing, "Appreciate everything ULM has done for me. But I'ma continue my journey somewhere else. I'ma miss my brothers though." The 6-foot, 218-pound junior rushed for 336 yards (3.6 YPC) in 2015. While he didn't score a touchdown on the ground, he did notch three receiving and showed nice hands out of the backfield on his way to catching 20 passes for 183 yards.

Browns selected Louisiana-Monroe CB Trey Caldwell with the No. 173 overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Caldwell is a sub-5-foot-9 corner and likely projects to the slot because of it. His 10 yard split of 1.50 seconds is ridiculous, and resulted in a 4.51 forty. His short shuttle of 4.19 seconds and 3-cone of 6.6 seconds are both very good, too. He played on 81.3 percent of the school's snaps last year. We don't know much about his game outside of that.

Louisiana-Monroe senior WR Rashon Ceaser accepted an invite to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

A All-Sun Belt First Team selection last year (Second Team in 2013), Ceaser unfortunately battled ankle problems all season and caught only 31 balls. Fully healthy in 2014, the 6-foot, 196-pounder had 77 receptions for 872 yards and three touchdowns. He's no doubt excited to get in front of scouts. NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter compared the Louisiana-Monroe product to Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers over the summer.
