The CIAA is running a continuous investigation into the fight at a luncheon that rendered Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson beaten before a league championship game.

Saturday's championship tilt between Winston-Salem State and Virginia State was canceled when Johnson was reportedly punched, stomped and kicked by as many as six Virginia State players. One player -- Virginia State running back Lamont Daniel Britt -- has been charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury, while four others have been questioned.

The CIAA championship (Division 2) on Saturday has been canceled because Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson was beaten up at a football banquet on Friday afternoon.

The Winston-Salem Journal is reporting that five members of Virginia State's football team administered the beating of the 2013 All-CIAA First Team quarterback in a restroom at the banquet hall. "We understand that some Virginia State University and Winston-Salem State University student-athletes were involved in an incident during the time of today's luncheon event," a statement from the CIAA stated. "The police are currently investigating the incident and are speaking with the individuals involved. Leadership from the CIAA and the participating institutions are fully cooperating." Johnson, who had visible swelling in his right eye, has already been treated at a hospital and released.

Former Virginia and Alabama junior QB Phillip Sims will transfer to Winston-Salem State.

WSSU is a Division II program, so Sims will be eligible to play immediately. This is Sims' third home since starting his college career, and he has struggled to sustain his play at each previous destination. Sims will likely have two more seasons of eligibility.

Former Virginia and Alabama junior QB Phillip Sims hopes to make his transfer decision by the end of the week.

Sims is apparently considering three or four schools, but would not go into more details on the decision other than saying it is a mix of FBS and Division II programs. The former Cavalier has been excepted into each school, but the dilemma would be redshirting if he enrolls in a FBS program, leaving Sims with only one year of eligibility remaining.

Liberty is the "top contender" to land former Virginia junior QB Phillip Sims, according to Michael Phillips of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Phillips notes that Old Dominion is not a possibility to Sims. Obviously Liberty is an FCS program, so he would be eligible to play immediately. Sims' time at Virginia did not end smoothly, but he has enough natural talent to warrant another opportunity.

Junior QB Phillip Sims, a former Alabama transfer, has been ruled ineligible and is no longer attending Virginia.

"Phillip Sims did not make the commitment he needed to succeed here," head coach Mike London noted. Beat writers had been expecting similar news after Sims had dropped on the depth chart for no apparent reason. Since Sims was ruled ineligible, that could hurt his chances of landing at another program.

Virginia beat writer Doug Doughty believes the likelihood of junior QB Phillip Sims returning next season "is going down by the day."

"While it is my understanding that Virginia quarterback Phillip Sims has been in school this month for "May term," I just feel that some sort of announcement on Sims’ future is imminent," Doughty added. Many believed Sims would start this season after Michael Rocco's transfer to Richmond, but he opened spring ball listed behind redshirts David Watford and Greyson Lambert.

Virginia will move forward utilizing a quarterback by committee approach, featuring junior Michael Rocco and sophomore Pillip Sims.

"We just feel like we have two guys that can help us win and we want to give them both opportunities to perform," offensive coordinator Bill Lazor said. The approach paid off against NC State on Saturday, and Rocco and Sims both excelled in their roles.

Virginia head coach Mike London stated that the Cavaliers will stick with sophomore Phillip Sims as their starting QB over junior Michael Rocco.

Sims struggled again on Saturday, completing only 13-of-28 attempts for 139 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Alabama transfer did gain 19 yards on the ground, but he also took a handful of sacks that resulted in a negative rushing total. Rocco then subbed in for Sims and looked much better than the sophomore.

Despite a fairly poor debut, Virginia will stick with sophomore Phillip Sims as their starting QB.

In fact, the coaching staff has erased the "or" label that joined Sims and junior Michael Rocco as co-starters at the position. Sims completed 21-of-42 passes for 268 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in Saturday's massive loss to Duke. The Cavaliers will give Sims, a transfer from Alabama, at least one more shot this weekend against Maryland.

Virginia sophomore Phillip Sims will start at QB on Saturday against Duke, as long as his leg injury permits it.

Sims started the season in a backup role to junior Michael Rocco after transferring from Alabama, but he has played more and more in the past two games. The sophomore played very well last week in a relief role against a solid Louisiana Tech team, throwing for 166 yards on 10 completions, including two touchdowns.

Virginia sophomore QB Phillip Sims took over for starter Michael Rocco during the Cavaliers' final drive of the third quarter against Penn State.

There has been no word on if Rocco left the game due to injury or if the coaches just wanted to give Sims some time in the game after losing out on the starting quarterback competition in camp. Rocco was 15-of-26 for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception prior to Sims' entrance.

Alabama sophomore QB transfer Phillip Sims' waiver was granted and he will be eligible to play for Virginia during the 2012 season.

This is obviously big news for the 6'2/217 pound quarterback and the Cavaliers. Sims spent two seasons with Alabama but redshirted his first year in Tuscaloosa, therefore he has three years of eligibility remaining. A "personal reason" was mentioned in Sims' departure, so it likely had something to do with him avoiding an extra redshirt year. Junior Michael Rocco started at quarterback last season for the Cavaliers, but put up pedestrian numbers including 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Sims has a chance to start with a solid summer camp.

The decision on Phillip Sims’ eligibility for 2012 likely will not come until the end of July.

Sims transferred from Alabama to Virginia in late April and petitioned the NCAA to play right away instead of sitting out a season, which is the norm when transferring from one FBS school to another. Sims' petition was filed on the grounds that his transfer was based on wanting to be closer to a family member that has a medical issue.

Coach Mike London welcomes transfer Phillips Sims to the UV football program.

London and the school released a statement regarding the transfer of Sims, who would have been the backup to A.J. McCarron at Alabama for a second straight season. Instead, Sims opted to leave Tuscaloosa in the hopes of more playing time. When he will be eligible to play for the Cavaliers is in question. Ordinarily, a player transferring from one FBS program to another would have to sit out a season. Sims will petition the NCAA to play immediately. Should he receive clearance, then Michael Rocco goes from starting QB to having to fight for his job in preseason practice.
