Howard hasn't done much recently while recovering from an infection near his surgically-repaired left Achilles tendon, so it's good to see him making some progress. The Phillies haven't put a timetable on his return, but reports have indicated that he could be back sometime in June. He'll require a rehab assignment first. May 25

	3	Jim Thome D.L. Jim Thome (back) played in an extended spring training intrasquad game Thursday. Thome has been sidelined for nearly a month now with a lower back strain. It's not clear when he'll be ready for an official minor league rehab assignment. May 24
2B	1	Chase Utley D.L. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was "encouraged" with what he saw from Chase Utley (knee) Thursday, when the second baseman took batting and infield practice. "I was encouraged with the way the ball was jumping off his bat and how nice he was swinging," Manuel said. "And any time he goes out and takes ground balls, I get encouraged by that." While it's good that Utley looks like himself in the cage, the fielding is what's still giving his knee trouble, and Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Utley's work in the field Thursday was "limited," as he took "fewer than 10 ground balls." It's still unclear when he'll be ready to start a rehab assignment. May 25

	2	Michael Martinez D.L. Phillies transferred INF Michael Martinez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Mike Fontenot. Martinez has been on the disabled list all season after breaking a bone in his right foot during spring training. May 11

	3	Laynce Nix D.L. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the recovery timetable for Laynce Nix (calf) is a matter of weeks, not days. Nix was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left calf strain on May 10, and was just recently cleared to begin exercises. "It's going to be longer than the 15 days," Nix said. "It's a pretty good tear. It's unfortunate." Nix is out indefinitely and remains without a timetable. May 19

	4	Vance Worley D.L. Vance Worley (elbow) said he was pain-free playing catch Thursday. Worley visited Dr. James Andrews earlier this week, who confirmed the Phillies' diagnosis of a bone chip and inflammation in his elbow. The 24-year-old right-hander may require offseason surgery, but he'll try to pitch through the condition for now. He's slated to play catch again Friday and will slowly ramp up his throwing program from there. May 24

	7	David Herndon D.L. Phillies placed RHP David Herndon on the 15-day disabled list with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow. He'll be shut down for three weeks but is not a candidate for surgery right now. Herndon gave up two runs in two innings during his most recent appearance Sunday and owns a 4.70 ERA and 8/1 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings this season. The Phillies will make a corresponding roster move Tuesday. Apr 30
