| C | 1 | Stephen Weiss ActiveThe Panthers are happy with Stephen Weiss, but they're not ready to talk about signing him to an extension yet. Weiss still has a season remaining on his six-year/$18.6 million deal. He had 20 goals and 57 points in 80 games this season. "I’m so proud of him," Panthers GM Dale Tallon said. "The first phone call I made the day I got the job was to him. I asked him what his thoughts were and he wanted to be involved and I think for him to get to the playoffs and have a bright future here in this organization, I’m really happy for Stephen. He showed a lot of character and class all year. Since I’ve been with him for two years, I can’t say enough about how he’s handled things. He’s been a world-class kid." He could be inline for a significant raise, so while inking him to an extension isn't an urgent issue, it is something they should probably explore over the summer. May 4 |
Shawn Matthias ActiveFlorida chose to sit Shawn Matthias, as a healthy scratch, for Wednesday's match-up versus the Carolina Hurricanes. He hasn't scored a goal in 16 straight games and has contributed just two assists over that span. Matthias logged a mere 9:09 of ice time against Philadelphia on Tuesday, so the writing appeared to be on the wall that he was heading for the press box. He has registered a personal best 10 goals and 24 points in 71 games this year, but that doesn't make him worthy of fantasy consideration at this time. Mar 22
John Madden ActiveJohn Madden will undergo nasal surgery after he collided with teammate Tomas Kopecky during the first period of Game 7 last Thursday. He sustained lacerations under and above his right eye, which was also bruised badly, and required stitches in his nose. Despite all that he remained in the game and hopes to play again next year in the NHL, even if it isn't with the Florida Panthers. The soon to be 39-year-old center will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Apr 30
Mike Santorelli ActiveMike Santorelli, who sat frequently as a healthy scratch during the regular season, will probably remain in the press box when the playoffs begin. He didn't play in Florida's final nine games and is still wearing the jersey of an extra player on the roster. Santorelli posted a career-high 20 goals and 41 points in 82 games in 2010-11, but he had only nine markers and 11 points in 60 appearances this past season. To his credit, he is staying ready to play should he get the call during the series. Apr 11
Marcel Goc ActiveMarcel Goc scored a power-play goal in Florida's double-overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils in Game 7 on Thursday. Goc ended up with two goals and five points in seven playoff games. That's pretty impressive for a man that got 27 points in 57 regular season contests. Goc was already great on the draw with a 60.2% faceoff success rate in the postseason. Apr 27
Jonathan Matsumoto ActiveJonathan Matsumoto has been summoned from the minors by Florida. He was traded to the Panthers in a four-player swap on Jan. 18 and has amassed 15 points in 14 games with AHL San Antonio since the deal. Matsumoto appeared in 13 NHL contests with Carolina last season and he posted two goals. Feb 23
| LW | 1 | Tomas Fleischmann ActiveTomas Fleischmann broke his left pinkie on slash he took in Game 1 of the first round against New Jersey. Fleischmann never missed a game due to the injury, although he was absent from some practices. He had a goal and three points in seven playoff contests. Apr 28 |
Sean Bergenheim ActiveSean Bergenheim fractured his left foot during Game 7 of Florida's first round series. The incident occurred in the first period, but Bergenheim stayed in the contest. He even registered an assist on the game-tying goal in the third period. He logged 20:52 minutes in the double-overtime contest, but the Panthers were ultimately eliminated, so he'll heal over the summer. Apr 28
Marco Sturm SidelinedMarco Sturm was a gamble that didn't pay off for the Florida Panthers. Sturm had just three goals and five points in 42 games after Florida acquired him from Vancouver on Oct. 22. "Obviously, it wasn’t the season I was hoping for," Sturm said. "That’s what I told Dale and Kevin [in my exit meeting]. I’m glad they traded for me here. I had a good time. We did a lot of good things here. I just had some tough injuries there but I’ve got to try to stay healthy, work hard again and see what happens." He was referring to GM Dale Tallon and head coach Kevin Dineen. Sturm is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and while Sturm appears to be open to re-signing with the Panthers, Florida will probably opt to move on. May 7
Tomas Kopecky ActiveTomas Kopecky scored a goal in a 4-1 loss Friday. It was Kopecky's ninth goal of the season. Kris Versteeg and Dmitry Kulikov assisted on his goal. Mar 30
Wojtek Wolski ActiveWojtek Wolski, Krys Barch and Mike Santorelli were healthy scratches for Saturday's Game 5 win over the Devils. Wolski has sat in the press box for three consecutive games now and is not likely to draw back in unless there is an injury. Apr 22
Krys Barch ActiveKrys Barch is slated for unrestricted free agency this July. He joined the Panthers from Dallas in a trade back in December, in order to protect his more talented teammates, but became a spectator down the stretch. Barch was scratched for seven of the last eight regular season games and all seven of Florida's playoff contests. In 41 games with the Panthers, he had five points and 91 penalty minutes. May 9
| RW | 1 | Kris Versteeg ActiveThe Florida Panthers want to re-sign restricted free agent Kris Versteeg. Given that Versteeg's a restricted free agent, it's almost certain that the two sides will reach an agreement. Versteeg had 23 goals and 54 points in 71 games last season. He came with a $3,083,333 cap hit in 2011-12 and while it's entirely possible that he'll get a raise, we don't think it will be a major one. May 4 |
Scottie Upshall ActiveCoach Kevin Dineen didn't provide a glowing review of Scottie Upshall's 2011-12 campaign after the Panthers were eliminated from the playoffs. "It wasn't a very good year for Scottie," Dineen said. "It was an up and down season. When he was healthy we didn't get the production we would like out of him to exploit the skill-set that he has, the shot and speed, so the expectations will be a lot higher next year." Upshall appeared in just 26 games during the regular season, while contributing two goals and three assists. He added three points in seven postseason contests. Apr 30
Mikael Samuelsson ActiveMikael Samuelsson will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, but Florida coach Kevin Dineen would like management to re-sign him. "He will play a number of years because of that intelligence, the way he can manage a game within his skill set," Dineen said. Samuelsson appeared in 48 games with the Panthers after joining the team in a trade with Vancouver. He recorded 13 goals and 15 helpers during that time. Samuelsson also had five assists in seven playoff matches. Apr 30
Jack Skille SidelinedJack Skille underwent shoulder surgery on Monday. Skille isn't likely to return before the end of the 2011-12 campaign. He suffered the injury on March 9. Mar 19
Jerred Smithson ActiveAccording to coach Kevin Dineen, Jered Smithson is likely to take the place of scratched Wojtek Wolski in Game 4. Smithson has played just once since March 29 and did not dress in either of the first two games of the series. He joined the Panthers at the trade deadline and recorded one assist in 16 games and totaled 1-5-6 in 69 matches between Florida and Nashville. Smithson is 2-1-3 in 31 career games. Apr 17
Matt Bradley SidelinedMatt Bradley was back skating with his teammates for the first time on Tuesday morning since being sidelined with a concussion back on Feb. 23. "It's been a tough year period. I'm not used to this kind of injury. It's quite frustrating," Bradley said. "It's tough to explain until you go through it. I hate watching games. I want to be a part of it. Guys are playing great, you just want to be out there and helping." Despite his anxiousness to return, he likely won't play during the Panthers' first-round series versus New Jersey. Apr 18
Michal Repik ActiveThe Florida Panthers have recalled Michal Repik from AHL San Antonio. He has contributed two goals and five points in 16 NHL games this season, in addition to picking up 24 points in 35 contests at the minor-league level. Feb 23
| D | 1 | Brian Campbell ActiveBrian Campbell had a goal and five points in seven postseason contests. Acquiring Campbell over the summer from the Chicago Blackhawks proved to be a great move for Florida. Campbell excelled in the regular season with 53 points and he didn't slow down in the playoffs. He should continue to play a huge role for the Panthers in 2012-13. Apr 27 |
Dmitry Kulikov ActiveDmitry Kulikov is slated for restricted free agency this summer. He'll likely receive a qualifying offer from the Florida Panthers. Kulikov showcased some upside in 2011-12, but he was limited to 58 games and missed 23 of those contests because of knee surgery. He concluded the year with four goals and a career-high 28 points. May 15
Ed Jovanovski ActiveIn the history of the Florida Panthers' franchise, Ed Jovanovski has participated in 27 of their 31 postseason contests. Jovanovski started his career in Florida, but he only spent three and a half NHL seasons with the club before he was traded in 1998-99. However, Florida went on a long playoff drought during Jovanovski's absence and are only now poised to end it in his first season back with the club. Jovanovski doesn't do a lot offensively at this stage of his career, but Panthers coach Kevin Dineen has been pleased with his performance. Jovanovski has also played a leadership role this season. Mar 23
Jason Garrison ActiveJason Garrison's first priority may be re-signing with the Florida Panthers, but that doesn't mean that he wouldn't consider other offers with unrestricted free agency on the table this summer. "I have such a good thing here in Florida," said Garrison on Wednesday. "I love the organization and my teammates. I have so many good friends and I'd hate to see myself playing somewhere else. But, I mean, ultimately it's not all up to me. So it's just kind of a waiting game now to see whether I'm going to re-sign with the Panthers. As it gets closer to that end of June-July 1 date, I'll obviously start weighing my options and seeing what's out there." The White Rock, BC native said he would listen if the Vancouver Canucks touched base with him, but it's unclear what their interest level is regarding the 27-year-old rearguard. Garrison enjoyed a career-year in 2011-12 with 16 goals and 33 points in 77 games. May 17
Mike Weaver ActiveMike Weaver's first goal of the year came in Game 3 of Florida's first-round series against New Jersey in the Stanley Cup playoffs. He has one marker in three games versus the Devils after failing to score in all 82 regular season contests, while contributing 16 assists. Weaver's goal tied the game at 3-3 after the Panthers had fallen behind 3-0 before the first period hit the halfway mark. Apr 19
Erik Gudbranson ActiveOne Panther player who saw his stock rise during the playoffs was rookie defenseman Erik Gudbranson. Often scratched during the regular season, Gudbranson was a rock during the post-season and displayed both physical and offensive elements to his game. "We saw this young guy develop into a man right before our eyes,'' said Florida GM Dale Tallon. "He got better and better, and am so glad we kept him through World Juniors [in December]. He had a great finish to the year. I thought in the playoffs he didn't take a back seat to anyone.''' Keep an eye on Gudbranson in September during training camp to see if he gets an expanded role including time on the Florida power play. May 13
Tyson Strachan ActiveTyson Strachan is expected to make his playoffs debut in Game 5 on Saturday. Strachan will fill in for the injured Jason Garrison (lower body). Strachan had a goal and three points in 15 games with the Panthers this season. Apr 21
Keaton Ellerby SidelinedKeaton Ellerby (undisclosed) skated with the team Monday and will accompany his mates to New Jersey for Game 6 on Tuesday night. There's a chance that he could play if he's deemed ready to return from an unknown injury that forced him to sit out Saturday's 3-0 victory. However, even if he is healthy his spot in the lineup could go to Tyson Strachan, who played well in Game 5, or to Jason Garrison if he is able to return from a lower-body injury. Apr 24
| G | 1 | Jose Theodore ActiveJose Theodore wanted to prove his doubters wrong and it's fair to say that he accomplished that feat during the 2011-12 campaign. He was a pivotal contributor in helping the Florida Panthers capture the Southeast Division title and qualify for the postseason when they were predicted by many to end up near the bottom of the NHL standings. Theodore's numbers weren't spectacular from a fantasy perspective, but his 22-16-11, record, 2.46 goals-against-average and .917 save percentage were serviceable statistics for depth purposes on most teams. He'll likely occupy the crease for the Panthers next year as well unless prospect Jacob Markstrom is ready to take the reigns. May 7 |
Scott Clemmensen ActiveWith Scott Clemmensen a free agent, the Panthers will have an interesting choice to make concerning their backup goaltender for the 2012-13 season. They could re-sign Clemmensen to back up Jose Theodore, who will be in the final year of his contract. Or they could promote goalie of the future Jacob Markstrom to serve as Theodore's understudy with a view of him taking over in 2013-14. For his part, Florida GM Dale Tallon may opt to re-sign Clemmensen to give Markstrom one more year of seasoning. "I’ve got nothing but admiration for [Clemmensen],’’ Tallon said. "You never have enough depth in goal, so we’ll continue conversations with him". Stay tuned. May 6
