Multi-car wrecks, red flags and six cautions could not keep ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship contender Austin Theriault from finding his way to victory lane at Daytona Int'l Speedway.

Theriault, in Ken Schrader's No. 52 Orlando Longwood Auto Auction Chevrolet, kept himself up front most of the way and, as a result, out of harm's way to win the action-packed Lucas Oil Complete Engine Treatment 200 Driven by General Tire Saturday afternoon. He led just four laps, drove around the outside of Terry Jones on lap 73, and then held on up through lap 75, which ended up being long enough to win when the race officially ended five laps shy of the intended distance. The race didn't go back to green as a result of damage to the safer barrier that required repairs that would have taken longer to fix than the series' allotted time. With sprinkles in the air, Jones, in the No. 30 NORTRAX Toyota, finished second after leading 25 laps, more laps than anyone else.

The Advance Auto Parts Clash has been delayed due to rain.

The track officials and NASCAR are attempting to dry the track so it will still run Saturday night. Whenever the green flag waves, Brad Keselowski will lead the field to green after getting the pole in a random draw.

Kyle Busch scored top-five finishes in his first three plate races last year, but chose to ride in the back at Talladega SuperSpeedway in the fall and finished 30th—thus denying him a chance to sweep this track type.

Busch did manage to sweep the top five at Daytona International Speedway, however; he finished third in the 500 and second in the 400. His three-race streak on this course type was the first time since 2008 that he managed to post back-to-back top-10s on NASCAR’s plate track.

Brad Keselowski won last year’s Coke Zero 400, but it was unlikely he was on many fantasy radar screens with four previous results outside the top 15.

Some players may have chosen to roll the dice on him, however, because three of four races from 2012 through 2014 ended in top-10s. Still, the balance is not in his favor with only four single-digit results in 16 career attempts.
Feb 18 - 7:50 PM

After two years of frustration, Kyle Larson finally earned the results he deserved at Daytona International Speedway; he swept the top-10 in 2016.

Larson ran well as a rookie and sophomore, but was involved in accidents in all four Daytona events with results of 34th or worse. Last year, he managed to stay out of trouble and finished seventh in the 500 and sixth in the Coke Zero 400.

Ryan Newman won the 2008 Daytona 500; in the 17 races since then, he has been involved in accidents in 12 races.

Accidents are unpredictable, but when a racer accumulates that many and is involved that regularly, an alarm has to go off in fantasy players’ heads. Newman has been incident-free in two of his last three attempts, however, and scored an eighth in July 2015 and 11th last February.

Daniel Suarez was fastest among the four 2017 Rookie of the Year contenders in Saturday’s practice with a speed of 192.922 mph.

That put him just outside the top five in sixth. It is also immediately behind last year’s rookie contender Ryan Blaney. Fantasy players should pay close attention to Young Guns throughout 2017.
Feb 18 - 3:37 PM

Aric Almirola posted the second-fastest speed in Saturday’s practice for the Daytona 500 with a lap of 193.054 mph.

Richard Petty Motorsports will field only one car this year and they hope that being able to focus on Almirola will help improve their results. One cannot make many predictions based on Daytona International Speedway, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.
Feb 18 - 3:33 PM

Joey Logano posted the fastest single lap in practice for qualification for the Daytona 500 with a lap of 193.116 mph.

Logano had the fastest time at the three-hour mark and held his advantage until the end. Time trials for the Daytona 500 set only the front row, but it provides insurance against a bad finish in Thursday’s qualification races.
Feb 18 - 3:29 PM

Joey Logano had the fastest single lap at the three hour mark of Saturday’s practice with a speed of 193.116 mph.

Logano was joined by Brad Keselowski in third with a speed of 192.773. Kyle Larson wedged between them and was the only other driver with a speed greater than 193 mph in this qualification-setup practice.
Feb 18 - 2:35 PM

Trevor Bayne had the fastest single lap in Saturday morning’s practice session with a speed of 192.299 mph.

This practice runs four hours long as drivers and teams work on qualification setup. Daytona 500 rules set only the front row on time trials so winning the pole is of increased importance. Bayne’s teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was second on the chart with a 191.992.
Feb 18 - 12:43 PM

Martin Truex Jr. had difficulty making his way through technical inspection for Saturday morning’s practice for the Daytona 500.

The team missed more than an hour of practice for Sunday’s qualification session as the team worked on both the front and rear of the car. Truex finished second in last year’s 500.

Michael Waltrip will compete in his 30th Daytona 500 with a chartered entry for Premium Motorsports.

Waltrip has started every Daytona 500 he attempted except for the 2012 edition. He is widely considered a great plate racer because of a pair of 500 wins in 2001 and 2003, but he has not cracked the top 20 in his last five starts in this event. He did, however, have a fifth-place finish in the 2013 Coke Zero 400 and was ninth in 2012.
Feb 18 - 11:40 AM

Jimmie Johnson has shown quite a bit of strength in the past four years at Daytona International Speedway with two wins and five top-fives, but his other three efforts tell a much different story.

Johnson has suffered through two accidents that sent him home 35th or worse. His other result was a 16th. Prior to sweeping Victory Lane in 2013, however, he had a best result of 20th in the three previous years and sustained crash damage five times in six races. He also broke a rear axle in that span.
Feb 18 - 11:38 AM

Jamie McMurray has sustained crash damage in 14 of his last 17 Daytona International Speedway races, including a DNF (failure to finish) in his latest attempt.

In several of those races, he was involved in more than one accident. Occasionally drivers are capable of surviving contact with a top-10 finish, but that has not been the case with McMurray. His single top-10 at Daytona since midway through 2010 was a seventh in the 2013 Coke Zero 400.
