Kyle Larson posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the Citizen Soldier 400 at Dover International Speedway with a speed of 165.578 mph.

This has been Larson’s best track during his career, but he cannot afford to leave anything to chance. He needs a solid qualification run later on Friday to start up front and avoid as much trouble as possible. That eclipsed June 2014’s speed record in qualification of 164.444 mph set by Brad Keselowski, but records are not officially set in practice.

Jamie McMurray finished 21st in this spring’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway, but what he really wants to duplicate is his 2015 success. Last year, he swept the top-10.

His best result last year on this track was a fourth in the fall, but that was not quite enough to advance him to the second round of the Chase. He must have his sight set on winning, but that is something he has never done in Delaware. McMurray finished second in 2006, which is one of only two top-fives at Dover.

Reed Sorenson entered this spring’s AAA 400 with a three-race streak of running at the end of a race at Dover International Speedway. He crashed on lap 204 and failed to finish.

Premium Motorsports is making the most of their opportunities, but it is hard to know how they might have fared with a complete race. For now, there are better dark horse contenders to consider in the Citizen Soldier 400.

With an average finish of 6.2 in five starts, Dover International Speedway is Kyle Larson’s best track. All but one of his starts there has ended in a top-10.

While this is Larson’s best track, one of his principal rivals for the top-12 in points shows this as his second worst. Austin Dillon should be easy to beat on paper, but there is a reason NASCAR runs the race and in order to keep a current streak of four top-10s alive, Larson needs to stay out of trouble.
Sep 30 - 11:04 AM

Paul Menard has scored six top-20 finishes in his last seven Dover International Speedway starts. Two of these were top-10s.

Dillon missed the top 10 this spring, but only by one position. He is flying under the radar with modest runs in recent weeks and could be one of this week’s greatest fantasy differentiators.
Sep 30 - 11:00 AM

In terms of average finishes, Dover International Speedway is Austin Dillon’s second-worst track with a 26.7 in six starts.

Dillon is five points behind the cutoff bubble and needs a much better result than he has ever experienced at Dover. He was 20th in June 2014, which is one of three top-25s. One piece of good news is that Dillon has been running at the end of every Dover race he entered.
