Kyle Larson earned only one top-15 in his first five Charlotte Motor Speedway attempts, but he has come on strong recently with three in his last four.

Despite earning three top-15s in his last four Charlotte races, a clear pattern has yet to emerge. Larson finished 13th in spring 2016, was fifth that fall, experienced trouble last spring, and was 10th in the fall. He fits the roster as a solid top-10 contender, but may not be an appropriate anchor.

Ryan Newman has finished outside the top 25 in four of his last six attempts of 2018.

Two of Newman’s worst results in the past six races have come on similarly configured, 1.5-mile tracks including last week’s 30th at Kansas Speedway. Newman’s poor finish at Kansas was the result of crash damage, but he was not exactly in the lead pack for much of that race and that makes him a questionable value at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Coke 600.

Timmy Hill will make his second 2018 attempt on a similarly configured 1.5-mile speedway in this week’s Coca-Cola 600.

Hill’s one previous start on this track type this year came last week at Kansas Speedway. He finished 32nd in that race, which was comparable to this other starts in 2017. His best finish last year on the "cookie-cutter" tracks was a 28th at Kansas, but he also had a 29th in the Coke 600.
May 22 - 11:48 AM

Ryan Blaney had an eight-race, top-10 streak on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks end at Kansas Speedway when he pushed up into Kyle Larson and crashed out of the KC Masterpiece 400.

In the eight races before then, Blaney’s worst finish on this track type was a 12th at Atlanta Motor Speedway this spring and his average was 7.5. There is no reason he should not be able to reload and score another top-15 in the Coke 600.
