Carl Edwards was running eighth with five laps remaining in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway. He was one of the first drivers to pit for fuel in the closing laps and got back on track to finish 10th in the final rundown.

By not attempting to stretch his fuel too far, Edwards was able to maintain position and fared better than the three leaders at the time. Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, and Martin Truex Jr. all ran out of gas and finished behind the No. 19 despite having much stronger cars.

Tony Stewart qualified well in his last two NASCAR races, but he failed to secure a strong finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Crown Royal Jeff Kyle 400 at the Brickyard last week. This week, he had a little luck on his side and secured his second top-10 finish of the year in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway.

Along with AJ Allmendinger, Stewart picked the right time to get momentum on his side. He is the winningest driver at Watkins Glen International and could challenge for at least a top-five if he can keep up with the strategy.

Clint Bowyer was one of the success stories in the Windows 10 400. He finished eighth at Pocono Raceway after having enough fuel to outlast most of the competition.

That was Bowyer’s sixth top-10 in the past nine races, but if he wants to move up in the standings to a comfortable spot, he is going to need to score more top-fives.

Kevin Lacroix muscled his way past Andrew Ranger – one of the most successful of those road race experts – on the final lap Sunday to take the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series JuliaWine.com Le 50 Tours checkered flag at Circuit de Trois-Rivieres.

It was just the fourth start for the 26-year-old rookie, who became the fastest driver in the series’ nine-year history to record two wins. The Saint-Eustache, Quebec, native was victorious in his second appearance on July 5 at Circuit ICAR after six years away from the sport. Following Ranger across the finish line at the famed 1.53-mile temporary street course was Alex Tagliani, Alex Labbe and L.P. Dumoulin. The remainder of the top 10 included Marc-Antoine Camirand, D.J. Kennington, Jason Hathaway, season points leader Scott Steckly and Simon Dion-Viens.

AJ Allmendinger finished seventh in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway, which gives him momentum at a critical time. Next week the series rolls into Watkins Glen, where ‘Dinger is the defending winner.

Allmendinger will need to win to earn an invitation to the Chase and everyone knows this is his best opportunity. He will be popular next week even after a disappointing Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in June.

Jimmie Johnson added a sixth-place finish in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway to his third in the Axalta We Paint Winners 400 this June. It was the first time since 2011 that he has swept the top-10 at this track.

His sixth-place finish comes on the heels of a 22nd at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and a 15th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway—both of which are flat tracks. Johnson did not have a dominant car, but he picked the right strategy at the end.

A blown engine on lap 20 of the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway ended a 49-race streak of events in which Kevin Harvick was running at the end. His last failure to finish was also occasioned by a blown engine in the spring 2014 Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Now is the time to experiment before the Chase begins. The No. 4 team will reload and run well at Watkins Glen International next week, but there may be better road ringers for one’s roster.

Greg Biffle spent less than 15 laps among the top five, but one of them was critical. He advanced from 14th to fifth as cars around him were forced to take fuel and he was scored in that position at the end of the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway.

This was Biffle’s first top-10 in the past nine weeks and only his second top-15. It is too soon to jump on his bandwagon, but momentum has shifted with less stimuli.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of several drivers who overcame mistakes in the pits and incidents on track Sunday at Pocono Raceway. He was caught speeding on pit road during a green flag stop near lap 50 and was later spun entering turn one. His fuel mileage strategy allowed him to cross under the checkers fourth in the Windows 10 400, however.

Hendrick Motorsports did not look like they were going to have a very good day until other cars starting running out of gas. Earnhardt finished one position behind Jeff Gordon and two ahead of Jimmie Johnson, however, and they managed to salvage the day.
Aug 2 - 5:44 PM

Jeff Gordon was running just outside the top 10 with one lap remaining in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway, but as drivers ran out of gas in front of him, he advanced to third at the checkers.

Gordon was one of the last drivers to pit during the last fuel stop. He was not overly strong most of the afternoon, but played the cards that were dealt him and that ultimately paid off for fantasy players.
Aug 2 - 5:34 PM

Brad Keselowski had a difficult Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway. He struck two pit crew members on about lap 55 and knocked a tire out of his box. He was penalized, lost a lap, made it back up with a Lucky Dog pass, and eventually survived a fuel mileage gamble to finish second.

The points count the same for fantasy owners even under circumstances like that, so Keselowski’s owners will pocket their luck and move on to Watkins Glen International.
Aug 2 - 5:27 PM

Matt Kenseth conserved his fuel better than anyone else on the track and scored his second win of the 2015 NASCAR season. His official lead over second-place Brad Keselowski was 9.013 seconds in the Windows 10 400 at Pocono Raceway.

With 10 to go Kenseth was in fourth. He watched Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., and Kyle Busch run out in front of him and swept past for the win on the final lap. Fuel mileage races are unpredictable, but they require a lot of skill and experience nonetheless.
