Ryan Newman finished eighth in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. That was his second consecutive top-10 finish on the heels of a ninth at Sonoma Raceway.

Both of these races were considered wild card affairs and that gives Newman a little breathing room as the series heads back to a track that allows drivers to control their own fate to a greater degree. NASCAR visits Kentucky Speedway next week where Newman has a career average finish of 13.8 in four starts.

Jeff Gordon crashed on the final lap of both the Daytona 500 and Geico 500 earlier this season to finish in the 30s, so it came as little surprise to see him spinning as the checkers waved. Fortunately he had already crossed the finish line on the final lap and was credited with sixth in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

It was not the victory he wanted in his final attempt on this legendary track, but it moved him up one position in the points and that could be critical in 10 weeks when the Chase begins.

Kurt Busch finished fifth in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway after starting the race 28th.

Daytona is one of the easiest tracks on which to overcome a poor starting position. Busch was one of three drivers who started outside the top 24 and then finished among the top 10. He was joined by third-place finisher Denny Hamlin who started 35th and fourth-place Kevin Harvick who started 34th. Fantasy owners do not need to worry about qualification on any of the plate tracks.

Quebec native Kevin Lacroix dominated the first-caution free race in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series history and triumphed in the Ecko Unlimited 100 at Circuit ICAR.

The 26-year-old Lacroix started from the fourth position in his No. 74 Lacroix Tuning/Excellence Chrysler Dodge on Sunday and made a quick move to the front as he took the lead from three-time defending ICAR winner Andrew Ranger on the second circuit. While Lacroix held a comfortable advantage throughout the 30-lap event, Ranger made a valiant run at the end only to end up 0.896 behind at the finish. Lacroix made his series debut in the 2015 season-opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and finished 26th.

Along with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, and Denny Hamlin—the drivers who lined-up first through third—Kevin Harvick has swept the top 10 in the first three restrictor-plate, superspeedway races this season. Harvick finished fourth in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Harvick did his best to push the leaders to the checkers and overachieved. As the field took the final flag, he turned Denny Hamlin in front of the pack to trigger a massive accident.
Jul 6 - 3:34 AM

Denny Hamlin finished third in the Coke Zero 400 and was then turned by Kevin Harvick as the field crossed under the checkers. Hamlin’s spin collected virtually every car on the lead lap, but not until after the results were set.

Hamlin was one of four drivers who currently have perfect records of top-10s on plate tracks this year, which makes him a solid pick for the fall Talladega SuperSpeedway race.
Jul 6 - 3:28 AM

Jimmie Johnson was the only driver who could occasionally challenge Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Coke Zero 400. Johnson led the second-most laps of 35 to Earnhardt’s 97, but he could not quite get enough help to make a last-lap pass on his teammate.

Johnson finished fifth in the Daytona 500 and was second to Earnhardt at Talladega SuperSpeedway in the Geico 500 to easily become the second-best driver on restrictor-plate, superspeedways this season.

Denny Hamlin was spun by Kevin Harvick in front of the field at the finish line and in the chain-reaction crash, Austin Dillon was launched into the catch fence on the frontstretch. He tore down the fence, destroyed his car, and ultimately landed on his lid after finishing seventh in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

Dillon climbed from the car uninjured. Safety advances in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series allows drivers to race this fearlessly and contributes to some exciting finishes. The wreck started at the front of the pack and every lead lap car except the winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. sustained damage.
Jul 6 - 2:59 AM

Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the field to green and he led the field to the checkers after pacing the pack for 97 laps in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.

This was Earnhardt’s second restrictor-plate, superspeedway victory in a row. He won the Geico 500 at Talladega SuperSpeedway and also finished third in the Daytona 500. Earnhardt is once again the Pied Piper of plate tracks.

George Brunnhoelzl III is once again all alone atop the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour career wins list at Caraway Speedway.

With his performance Saturday night Brunnhoelzl took home the checkered flag in the Daggett & Shuler Attorneys at Law Rusty Harpe Memorial 150 for his 12th career victory at the venerable .455-mile oval. That breaks a tie for the track lead he was in with Andy Seuss, who won the tour’s last visit to Caraway in March.
Jul 5 - 3:09 PM

In only his seventh start, 23-year-old Rico Abreu from St. Helena, California, earned his first NASCAR win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Columbus Motor Speedway Saturday night.

With his win in the NAPA 150, Abreu continues his breakout year that saw him with the prestigious Chili Bowl Nationals sprint car event, make his first stock car start in February, sign with HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks and win his first Coors Light Pole Award in the previous K&N Pro Series East event at Langley Speedway. Abreu captured his second Coors Light Pole Award in a row earlier in the evening at Columbus, but it was the decisive pass for the lead that he made on Lap 115 that ultimately delivered his first victory.
Jul 5 - 2:50 PM

Sprint Cup regular Austin Dillon won the Subway Firecracker 250 , his fifth victory in 90 NASCAR XFINITY Series races.

This is the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet Camaro driver's third NXS victory and 10th top-10 finish in 2015. It is his first victory and fifth top-10 finish in six NXS races at Daytona International Speedway.
Jul 4 - 11:34 PM

Rico Abreu, the Rutherford, California, native captured the Coors Light Pole Award for the second-consecutive NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race when he took top qualifying honors at Columbus Motor Speedway in advance of the NAPA 150.

He turned a fast lap of 14.154 seconds (84.659 mph) around the .333-mile oval to set the series’ track qualifying record. The previous mark of 14.176 (84.565) was established by Max Gresham in 2011. Tonight’s NAPA 150 will be just the seventh series race for Abreu, who came to NASCAR this year from dirt sprint cars. His first pole was earned on June 20 at Virginia’s Langley Speedway.
Jul 4 - 7:37 PM

Andy Seuss continued his dominant ways at Caraway Speedway Saturday evening when he took the Coors Light Pole Award for the Daggett & Shuler Attorneys at Law Rusty Harpe Memorial 150.

Seuss, originally from Hampstead, New Hampshire, posted a fast lap of 16.078 seconds (101.878 mph) around the .455-mile oval. It marked his 12th career NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour pole overall, and eighth at Caraway. He won this same event from the pole in wire-to-wire fashion a year ago. A defense of that victory tonight would be a tour record 12th career triumph at Caraway.
Jul 4 - 7:32 PM

Alex Tagliani, who hails from nearby Lachenaie, Quebec, posted a fast lap of 96.342 seconds (78.956 mph) Saturday at Circuit ICAR to capture his sixth career Canadian Tire Series pole.

It’s Tagliani’s second pole in three visits to the 2.113-mile airport course. He was the inaugural event’s polesitter in 2011. The Circuit ICAR winner in each of the previous three years, Andrew Ranger qualified on the outside pole for the Ecko Unlimited 100. The Roxton Pond, Quebec, native’s fastest lap Saturday was 96.372 seconds (78.932 mph). On Sunday he will look to extend his own series record for consecutive wins at a track.
