Michael McDowell and the No. 95 team blew an engine at Las Vegas last year in the second attempt of the season, while they still had plans to make all the races. Once they trimmed their schedule, results improved.

Five of the six races for which they qualified on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks ended in a narrow range of results from 29th to 32nd, which made them an interesting choice for the bottom salary cap slot.

Casey Mears earned eight results in the 20s during last year’s 10 races on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks. The only time he failed to finish in that range was during the last two races; he was 31st at Charlotte and 18th at Texas.

His average finish on this track type was 25.1, which is about where fantasy owners can expect him to run again this week. If he fits a niche on a fantasy roster, he should be predictable.

After finishing 36th in the Kobalt 400 at Vegas last spring, Cole Whitt improved on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks and had a worst result of 31st. His average on this track type was 27.8.

His last three attempts at Kansas, Charlotte, and Texas ended in results of 23rd, 28th, and 26th respectively, which suggest he is on the rise. Front Row Motorsports will undergo some changes this week after loaning David Ragan to Joe Gibbs Racing, but that should not impact Whitt’s performance.

When David Ragan takes the green flag at Atlanta in the Folds of Honor Quik Trip 500, he will be in the best equipment of his career since leaving Roush-Fenway Racing; in fact, with Joe Gibbs on the rise, it could be the best he has ever run.

Driving for Roush, he scored 10 top-10s and 22 results of 17th or better in 46 races on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks. He is still moderately priced in salary cap games and should be one of the best values of the week. Now is the time to lock him in.
Feb 26 - 10:15 AM

Reed Sorenson’s average finish on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks improved by nearly five positions in the second half of the 2014 season. He went from 33.6 in the first five races on this track type to 28.8 at the end.

Sorenson is racing for a new team with limited experience, so he is unlikely to be a great value this week, but fantasy owners should do research on every driver in the field.

Kevin Harvick has every right to be confident heading into the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He has three NXS victories at the 1.5-mile oval, including going two-for-two in the series’ most recent trips to Atlanta (August 2013 and 2014).

Atlanta is the first of 12 races that Harvick is scheduled to run in the No. 88 Chevrolet Camaro for JR Motorsports. The team will unload with chassis No. 892 this weekend. In four starts, it has one win, three top-five and four top-10 finishes. Harvick has led the most laps in three of four races with it, including his dominant win at Atlanta last year, ultimately leading a total of 34.4 percent of all laps completed in chassis No. 892.-JR Motorsports

Chase Elliott’s debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway last year was a historic one. Less than six months ago, Elliott drove his NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet to his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series pole at the 1.54-mile facility, becoming the youngest pole winner in the track’s history.

Returning this weekend as the reigning series champion, Elliott, a native of nearby Dawsonville, Ga., is focused on defending the title and winning in front of his hometown crowd.-JR Motorsports

Viva Motorsports is gearing up for the second race of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Season, the Hisense 250 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Jeffrey Earnhardt will once again be behind the wheel of the No. 55 Chevy Camaro. The team looks to capitalize on the momentum from a solid 16th place run in the season opener. The Car: The Viva Motorsports team will be unloading chassis VM-010 as the primary race car and VM-005 will ride along as backup.-Viva Motorsports

After a successful weekend in Daytona, David Starr and the No. 44 Zachry Group Camry team are ready to take to the 1.5-mile speedway in Atlanta this weekend.

In only two starts at the speedway, Starr has an average starting position of 29.5 and an average finishing position of 27.0. Currently sitting inside the top-5 in drivers points, Starr is hoping to work off of the momentum of last weekend this Saturday in the Hisense 250. This will mark Starr's 43rd NASCAR XFINITY Series race.-TriStar Motorsports NC

Cunningham Motorsports’ co-owner Kerry Scherer announced today that his organization has reached an agreement with Roush Fenway Racing to become a driver development team for them in the ARCA Racing Series.

Their primary driver will be 17-year old Kyle Weatherman, who will join the Cunningham team for the next ARCA race at Mobile International Speedway in Mobile, Ala., on Saturday, March 14. Weatherman has made 13 ARCA Series starts, earning five top-five finishes and 10 top-10 finishes, while leading 91 laps in three races. His career-best qualifying effort came in 2013 when he sat on the outside pole at Iowa Speedway. In seven years of racing Weatherman has built an impressive racing resume, which includes more than 190 victories and four national championships in the USLCI Legend Car Series.-ARCA Racing

Mike Wallace will make his first attempt at Atlanta since 2005 and he hopes this week goes better. In two attempts that year, he failed to qualify in the fall and was 40th with a blown engine in the spring.

His latest attempt on this track type ended in a respectable 34th at Kansas last fall, however. That is not enough to get him a roster selection, but it will make him a driver worth watching as a possible dark horse later in the season.
Feb 25 - 10:34 AM

Last year JJ Yeley was entered in eight races on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks for three different teams. He settled in with BK Racing at the end of the year and scored a best of 29th at Kansas.

In order to become a solid value, Yeley needs some stability with a team and that has been lacking since his departure from Joe Gibbs Racing in 2007. Evaluate him this week, but fantasy owners will probably want to wait until the end of the year before starting him on an unrestricted, intermediate speedway.
