Chase Elliott leads the first practice session for the Nationwide Series Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The lap of 123.324 mph in the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro was best of the 43 cars out on the track for this session. No. 54 Kyle Busch, No. 5 Kevin Harvick, No. 2 Brian Scott and No. 22 Ryan Blaney are the rest of the top five on the speed chart. Blake Koch in the No. 23 Chevrolet Camaro was the slowest. Elliott also had a 10-lap average speed of 121.057 mph. This was the best of the 10 cars running at least 10 consecutive laps.

Josh Wise has been on a downward spiral on NASCAR’s short tracks this season. He finished 23rd at Bristol, 35th at Martinsville, and 39th at Richmond in three races on this course type.

The No. 98 team is giving their all with limited resources and short tracks are often considered driver’s courses. There appears to be too much of a deficit to overcome for the moment, however.

Austin Dillon will race chassis No. 457 this week in the Irwin Tools Night Race. This chassis was last raced at Pocono in June where it finished 17th.

Chassis No. 457 has mostly seen action on unrestricted, intermediate speedways and it had some success at Auto Club this March. Dillon nearly cracked the top 10 with an 11th in that event.

Greg Biffle enters the Irwin Tools Night Race with a five-race, top-20 streak to his credit, but the good news is that his latest three efforts netted top-15s.

Better still, Biffle’s single top-10 at Bristol since fall 2011 came in last year’s Irwin Tools Night Race, so he could be considered a sleeper for Saturday night’s race.
Aug 21 - 2:27 PM

Brad Keselowski will race chassis No. PRS-918 this week. It was last run at Michigan and June where it finished third.

Michigan is a relatively flat track, but the speed carried through the corners translates to quick turns. Keselowski raced a new chassis at Bristol this spring and finished 14th.

Jamie McMurray is batting 0.500 at Bristol in his last 10 races. In that span of events, he has five top-10s including a best of third in the 2010 night race.

His other results are poor enough to give him an average finish of only 13.9, however. His Food City 500 this spring netted a 38th. He should not be considered and automatic pick this week, but should be watched for signs of strength in practice.
Aug 21 - 2:25 PM

Justin Allgaier has shown remarkable consistency on short tracks with three results ranging from 17th to 23rd.

Allgaier’s best finish on this track type came at Bristol this spring and he could be one of this week’s top differentiators. He is a high risk driver who could crack the top 15 under the right circumstances.
Aug 21 - 1:44 PM

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. recorded a remarkable second-place finish at Bristol this spring and hoped that would translate into a strong short track season. He suffered crash damage at both Martinsville and Richmond, however, and finished outside the top 35.

Accidents can completely stall momentum, but if Stenhouse rebounds this week fantasy players may consider starting him at Richmond.
Aug 21 - 1:43 PM

Brad Keselowski entered the Toyota / Save Mart 350k at Sonoma with a four-race top-10 streak. Three of these were top-fives, but the tide shifted soon after and he has been much less consistent on oval tracks.

The No. 2 team seems to have given up consistency to gamble for wins. In the last six oval races, Keselowski won twice and has another top-10, but he also finished outside the top 15 in two events.
Aug 21 - 1:42 PM

Denny Hamlin finished sixth in this spring’s Food City 500 at Bristol and that has been the highlight of his short track season. Since then he finished 19th at Martinsville and 22nd at Richmond.

Traditionally Hamlin has been much stronger on the short, flat tracks so this trend is disconcerting. But he also has earned top-10s in his last five oval races this season so his momentum seems to have shifted.
