Reed Sorenson finished 34th in this spring’s STP 500 at Martinsville. That was a modest result, but was still better than his last four attempts on this track.

Most of Sorenson’s efforts in the past three years have included parking early, but the Tommy Baldwin Racing teams attempt to go the full distance each week. This spring, Sorenson was running at end of the race, but he was eight laps off the pace.

In his last three starts at Martinsville, Josh Wise has finished consistently in the mid-30s with a 35th in the last two spring races and a 34th last fall.

Wise has shown the same kind of consistency this year on short, flat tracks. His 34th in the STP 500 was followed by results in the high 20s and low 30s at New Hampshire and Richmond in the three most recent events.

Three of Cole Whitt’s five races on short tracks this season have ended in a narrow band of results around 30th. His best finish was a 29th in the STP 500 at Martinsville this spring.

Whitt’s last two attempts on this short track ended in a pair of 30ths at Bristol and Richmond, while his two bad results came as the result of on track incidents. Whitt is predictable, but not necessarily a good value.

After scoring a top-10 last week on the restrictor-plate, superspeedway at Talladega, Travis Kvapil is back behind the wheel of the No. 33 Joe Falk ride for the Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville.

Kvapil was in Frank Stoddard’s No. 32 this spring and finished 33rd, but last year in BK Racing equipment, he finished 24th in this race. Look for a finish somewhere in between those two results in this week’s Goody's 500 and plan accordingly.

Joey Logano has been almost perfect on short, flat tracks this year. He won the Richmond spring race, the fall New Hampshire race, and finished worse than sixth only once in six starts.

Logano’s only failure to finish in the top-six came as the result of getting tangled with a lapped car in the first New Hampshire event; he was running second at the time.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a current 12-race, top-15 streak going on short, flat tracks. The last time he finished outside that mark was in the spring 2013 STP 500 at Martinsville.

Earnhardt has something to prove this week after getting knocked out of Chase contention at Talladega and he will challenge his teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon for the victory. His Achilles Heel for most of his career has been in getting behind on race trim setups, however, and that will be critical this Sunday. He has not proven to have reversed that trend, so he is a bit of a gamble.

In six short track races this season, Kevin Harvick has earned only one previous top-five. The good news for fantasy players is that came in the most recent event on this course type with a fifth in Richmond’s Federated Auto Parts 400.

Harvick’s previous records on a track or track type are much less important than his current momentum this year, however, and he is a weekly threat to finish in the top five. That also makes him an expensive driver and players might not view him as a great fantasy value.
Oct 24 - 9:38 AM

Matt Kenseth entered the most recent short track race at Richmond with a perfect record of top-15 finishes on this track type, but crash damage dropped the No. 20 70 laps off the pace and relegated Kenseth to a 41st-place finish in the Federated Auto Parts 400. He hopes to rebound in the Goody's 500.

Kenseth also ended the 2013 season with an equally long streak, which gives him nine top-15s in his last 10 races. He should be viewed as a good fantasy value this week.
Oct 24 - 9:37 AM

Kyle Busch has a current four-race streak of top-15s at Martinsville, but this might not be the best week to start him. Six of his previous nine races there ended well outside of the top 20.

Busch has always been an all or nothing driver and Martinsville is no exception. While cars are durable on short tracks, they will only take so much abuse and Busch could easily wind up outside the top 20 again this week in the Goody's 500.
Oct 23 - 10:39 PM

Denny Hamlin finished sixth or better in nine consecutive races from 2006 through 2010, but his efforts have fallen off in recent attempts. Only three of his last six attempts have resulted in top-10s.

During his incredible streak, he won four races and finished second on two other occasions. This spring he finished 19th, but never contended for a top-five. That makes him a risky proposition.

In an 11th hour agreement, short track racing ace Peyton Sellers will drive Win-Tron Racing’s No. 35 Danville Toyota / Pembelton Forrest Products Toyota Tundra in Saturday’s Kroger 200 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

The pairing seems like a natural fit, as Win-Tron Racing hails from the short track ranks, while Sellers will compete at his hometown track, often dubbed as the paperclip. Sellers will make his third start at the 0.526-mile oval, while his Mooresville, North Carolina-based Win-Tron Racing team will do the same. Together, the pair hopes to make the best of what Sellers calls a "good situation," and deliver a top-10 finish in the penultimate short track race of the season.

John Hunter Nemechek has two previous starts at the .526-mile Martinsville Speedway.

With five top-10's in eight starts this season, Nemechek looks to improve on his previous Martinsville finishes of 16th and 11th. In eight starts this season, he has fared best at tracks where he had never before raced a lap. His three sixth-place finishes at Dover, Eldora and Bristol and 53 laps led en route to a top-15 at Gateway paved the way for a promising run at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last month, where he did not disappoint. He captured his first career NCWTS top-five.-NEMCO Motorsports

Germán Quiroga has three previous starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Martinsville Speedway.

He has earned two top-10 finishes, coming home seventh in March of this season and in October of 2013. The Mexico City native qualified fifth in his first start at the Martinsville, Virginia race track.-Red Horse Racing
