With a lap of 190.398 mph, Kevin Harvick earned his sixth pole of the season. Starting up front has been a good omen for this driver. Four of his previous five poles this year ended in top-10 finishes, including a victory at Darlington and second-place finishes at Kansas and Michigan.

Harvick will need an error-free race to finish that well again. Last week he won the pole for the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol, but a late-race penalty for speeding on pit road kept him from finishing in the top 10.

Sprint Cup regular Matt Kenseth tops the speed chart in the Happy Hour practice session for the Nationwide Series Great Clips 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The No. 20 Toyota Camry driver ran a fast lap of 177.738 mph. No. 3 Ty Dillon, No. 22 Joey Logano, No. 9 Chase Elliott and No. 60 Chris Buescher round out the top five of the 39 cars out on the track. The No. 46 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Carl Long was the slowest in the final practice session. Kenseth also had a 10-lap average speed in both the first practice and the final practice. His 173.188 mph average was the best of three cars running at least 10 consecutive laps in the first session and his 172.807 mph average was the best of 13 cars running 10 consecutive laps in the final practice session.

Chris Buescher leads the first practice session for the Nationwide Series Great Clips 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The lap of 177.880 mph in the No. 60 Ford Mustang was best of the 36 cars out on the track for this session. No. 20 Matt Kenseth, No. 3 Ty Dillon, No. 54 Kyle Busch and No. 22 Joey Logano are the rest of the top five on the speed chart. John Jackson in the No. 72 Chevrolet Camaro was the slowest.
Aug 29 - 7:31 PM

Dale Earnhardt Jr. posted the quickest 10-lap average in the first practice session for the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta. He went 184.691 mph during his first 10 laps on the track.

Included in that 10-lap average was the fourth-fastest speed overall, which was recorded on his second lap. Earnhardt seems to have the right balance of speed and durability over the long run that ends up in top-five finishes on the unrestricted, intermediate speedway, but he needs to qualify among the top 10 in order to utilize that speed.
Aug 29 - 5:26 PM

Carl Edwards posted the fastest lap in the first practice session for the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta. His top speed of 192.855 mph was set during his first lap on the track.

Edwards has a long history of success on this track, but Roush-Fenway Racing’s struggles in 2014 have made him a questionable fantasy value. This practice has gone a long way to answering that query and if he remains fast on Saturday, he could become a favorite.
Aug 29 - 4:04 PM

In a press conference prior to the first practice session for the Oral-B USA 500, NASCAR president Mike Helton announced that Tony Stewart will receive a waiver and would be eligible for a Chase berth if he wins one of the final two regular season races.

The waiver is a secondary concern for Stewart this week as he simply looks to return to a sense of normalcy by racing. In his press conference earlier in the day, Stewart was still visibly shaken by the fatal event that led to his three-week hiatus and until he gets inside the car, it is simply too soon for fantasy players to assess his ability to challenge for a top-10 position.

Based on his consistency, Cole Whitt could be a conditionally good pick for fantasy players. His last four efforts on the similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks of Texas, Kansas, Charlotte, and Kentucky have ended in results ranging from 27th to 31st.

Whitt will not anchor many rosters, but if he fits the final niche he could be a good value. Consistency is often at least as important for players as raw strength.
Aug 29 - 10:06 AM

Kurt Busch will race chassis No. 760 at Atlanta. This car has been raced previously at Kansas in May and Indy in July.

Chassis No. 760 did not fare well in either race, finishing 29th at Kansas and 28th at Indy. As is often the case with this driver, he showed promise during the afternoon, but ultimately it is the finishing result that matters most to fantasy owners.

Aric Almirola’s record on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks this year resembles a bell curve. He has three top-12 finishes at Texas, Kansas, and Charlotte, which are bracketed by a 25th at Vegas and 39th at Kentucky.

Almirola has had several bad runs since winning the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona and needs to turn his fortune around. In the past six races, his average finish is 26.3 and even if he improves on that, he might not be a great value in this week’s Oral-B USA 500.
Aug 29 - 10:04 AM

Kyle Larson has been consistently strong everywhere NASCAR has raced this year, but some of his most modest results have come on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks. With the exception of a fifth at Texas and 12th at Kansas, the remainder of his efforts ended outside the top 15.

In certain games, Larson may still be a good value. He finished 19th at Vegas and 18th at Charlotte, which gave him a sweep of the top 20 entering Kentucky. In that race he cut a tire and pounded the wall, but he was already struggling prior to the incident.
Aug 29 - 10:03 AM

Jimmie Johnson will race chassis No. 48-797 this week. This is the same car he drove at Michigan two weeks ago and finished ninth.

Johnson overcame a mid-race problem with his shifter lever in that race and the ninth-place finish might have been better without that problem. This team has long been one of the best on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks and should be considered one of the marquee choices for the Oral-B USA 500.

Aug 29 - 10:01 AM

Ryan Newman has finished 16th or better in the five races contested on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks so far this year. His worst result was a 16th at Texas, but his best effort came in the most recent race at Kentucky.

Newman’s best Atlanta effort in a decade came in his most recent attempt there as well. He finished fifth in last year’s AdvoCare 500. This upward trend is a good omen for fantasy players.
Aug 29 - 9:59 AM

If the first five races this year on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks are an indication, David Ragan should finish somewhere in the 30s at Atlanta. His best result on this track type in 2014 is a pair of 31sts at Charlotte and Kentucky.

Ragan also has a 32nd at Vegas, so there is a strong possibility that he will finish in the low 30s. If his salary cap has shrunk to an acceptable level in some games, he could fit into the final slot on a player’s roster.
Aug 28 - 6:47 PM

Tony Stewart will race for the first time in three weeks following a fatal accident in a sprint car event in upstate New York. He will be distracted by media attention, but should be considered a strong contender.

Stewart missed last year’s AdvoCare 500 because of a physical injury, but two of his past three Atlanta races ended in top-fives including a victory in 2010. Look for him to limit his availability to the media by spending a lot of time in the car and if his practice sessions are solid, do not shy away from starting him.
Aug 28 - 6:46 PM

Paul Menard is consistent and occasionally strong on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks. In five races this year he has a best of third at Vegas and a worst of 17th at Kansas.

On those two tracks plus Texas, Charlotte, and Kentucky he has combined for an average finish of 10.4. At his salary cap level, that makes him one of this week’s best values.
