Someone needs to convince Ryan Newman that it is fall at Dover. He has finished eighth in each of the last AAA 400s.

Newman has been much stronger in the fall than spring. His last two FedEx 400s ended in the 30s. With recent momentum on his side this season, he should be able to reverse his personal trend.

Sam Hornish Jr. will attempt to get reacquainted with Dover International Speedway this week. His last Cup start on this track came in 2012 and his last attempt in an XFINITY car was in 2013.

Hornish’s most recent Cup effort ended in a 25th; his best result came in the XFINITY series in 2013 with a seventh. His finishing result this week is uncertain, but there is one statistic that is reliable: Hornish will finish worse than he qualifies. In 12 starts in both series, he has never improved during a race.

Brett Moffitt will make his second Dover start this week in Front Row Motorsports’ No. 34. Last spring he raced a Jay Robinson / Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) collaborative effort to a 22nd-place result.

Moffitt has been better in MWR cars than those for Front Row. Now that he is running fulltime, his efforts have softened somewhat and he should only be used if he qualifies modestly enough to earn positive place differential points in games that award them.

JJ Yeley will race for his fourth different owner in four Dover International Speedway races when he starts this Sunday’s FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks. His best result in that span was a 34th for Tommy Baldwin Racing (TBR).

His 34th in the No. 36 was the fourth consecutive race he made at Dover for TBR, which suggests he benefited from the chemistry the team built. He is in another fulltime ride this week, and should be able to finish in the mid-30s again.

Travis Kvapil is still seeking to make his first start of the 2015 season. He failed to qualify three times in the No. 40 Johnathan Cohen entry and once in the No. 39 Michael Hillman ride. This week he will be behind the wheel of the No. 39 once more.

Only 45 cars are entered and Kvapil missed the top spot by only one position at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway. Dover International Speedway is a driver’s track, however, and he might be able to make up the difference.

Jimmie Johnson has appealed his P1 penalty for taking too many passes through the inspection line in the past two weekends. The penalty would have caused him to make one of the last two selections for a pit stall, which would insure that he had one of the worst pits in the field.

Dover International Speedway has one of the most treacherous pit roads and this would have been a distinct disadvantage. By appealing, the team can defer the penalty to next week at Pocono where pit selection is not as critical.
