The lap of 118.442 mph was the best of the 40 cars completing laps in this session. No. 48 Brennan Poole, No. 3 Ty Dillon, No. 1 Elliott Sadler and No. 21 Daniel Hemric made up the rest of the top-five on the speed chart. The No. 74 Dodge driver, Mike Harmon, was the slowest.

Martin Truex Jr. posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the Toyota Owners 400 with a speed of 124.178 mph.

In a 400-lap race, qualification matters because track position is difficult to make up. A good pit selection that comes with a top-five start makes it easier to handicap a driver at the top of the order.

In addition to driving his regular No. 42 Chevrolet SS in Sunday's Cup Series Toyota Owners 400, Kyle Larson will pilot the No. 42 CreditOne Chevrolet Camaro in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond Int'l Raceway (RIR) on Saturday.

Joey Logano will make his 300th career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start at Richmond International Raceway on Sunday.

In doing so, Logano will become the youngest Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver ever to reach the 300 start plateau. Logano will also make his first appearance of the season in the FOX broadcast booth at Richmond, serving as a guest analyst for the NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Saturday.

In 2014, he took the checkered flag after leading 52 laps in the K&N Pro Series East race. In Custer’s three combined starts in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (two races) and NASCAR XFINITY Series (one race) at Richmond, Custer has a win, two top-five finishes, three top-10s and 76 laps led. He is third in the XFINITY Series championship standings, 130 points behind series leader Elliot Sadler.-Stewart-Haas Racing
