Jeff Gordon had fresh tires on his Chevrolet and was in the process of passing teammate Jimmie Johnson for fifth-place when he lost a right front tire at New Hampshire. He was able to stay on the lead lap, but was the last driver to do so with a 26th-place finish in the Sylvania 300.

Gordon salvaged a 21-point advantage over 13th in the standings, but a baffling question remains as to what went wrong with the setup of his car. That was the first time all day he had any issues, and it is unlikely that a radical setup change would account for the problem.
Sep 22 - 5:17 PM

Kasey Kahne’s Atlanta Oral-B 500 victory is beginning to look more like a distant memory with each passing race. He finished 23rd in the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire and slipped to 11th in the Chase rankings. Only 12 drivers will advance to the second round after Dover.

If Kahne can survive the AAA 400 at Dover, he could get back on track in the next two races, which will be run on similarly-configured, 1.5-mile tracks, but his Chicagoland effort ended outside the top 10, so that is not a certainty.
Sep 22 - 5:16 PM

Like his teammate Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth had a seesaw race at New Hampshire. Unlike his teammate, however, his day ended in the middle of the rundown with a 21st-place finish in the Sylvania 300.

A 21st-place finish might not seem that bad, but it made him the fifth-worst Chase contender and ruined his record of consistency. Without a win to his credit, Kenseth will need to regain that constancy before he can be viewed as a good fantasy value.
Sep 22 - 5:14 PM

Ryan Newman has gotten progressively worse in each of the last three races this season. He finished ninth at Richmond on the heels of a seventh at Atlanta, narrowly earned a top-15 at Chicagoland, and finished 18th last week at New Hampshire.

There is still room for Newman to drop down the standings and if he does, the likelihood of him earning an invitation to the Contender round is low. That might not be such a bad thing for fantasy players if it takes some of the pressure off of his shoulders, however.
