Carl Edwards has been searching for speed in the early sessions of practice for the Goody's 500. He posted only the 26th fastest single lap in Saturday morning’s practice and was 19th of 34 drivers who posted 10 or more laps.

Edwards is happy with his car and that might be encouraging to his fans. It is not a very high recommendation to start him, however.

Jeff Gordon not only had the second fastest single lap in the Saturday morning practice session for the Goody's 500, he posted the quickest 10-lap average with a speed of 97.344 mph from his laps five through 14.

One of the reasons Gordon has won eight races on this track is that he knows how to set up a car for long runs and that will serve him well on Sunday.
Oct 25 - 12:10 PM

Jeff Gordon posted the second fastest lap in Saturday morning’s practice session for the Goody's 500. His top speed of 97.699 was 7/100ths slower than teammate Jimmie Johnson.

Gordon stumbled in qualification and will roll off the grid 13th. He mistimed his lap, however, and went out while the track was cold. He should still be considered one of the favorites for Sunday’s race.

Alex Bowman qualified 19th this spring, but fell to 36th before the checkers waved over the STP 500 at Martinsville. He decided to try and reverse that trend this week; he qualified 32nd for the Goody's 500.

There are plenty of solid dark horses available to fantasy owners at Martinsville this week, which limits the attractiveness of Bowman, but if he runs well on the half-mile short, flat track, he should be watched at Phoenix.

Jimmie Johnson posted the fastest single lap in the Saturday morning practice session for the Goody's 500. His fastest lap was 98.023 mph.

Johnson qualified seventh and should be able to get to the lead early. Expect him to lead a lot of laps on Sunday and earn the bonus points that go along with that.
Oct 25 - 9:53 AM

Greg Biffle was probably not particularly happy with his qualification effort that landed him 21st on the Goody's 500 grid, but that is about average during his last three starts at Martinsville.

Biffle qualified 22nd in the spring 2013 STP Gas Booster 500 and finished ninth. This spring, he started just outside the top 10 in 11th and fell to 18th, so he is one driver for whom starting position on this bullring seems to be unimportant.
Oct 25 - 9:38 AM

Kasey Kahne qualified 24th for the Goody's 500. This will be the third consecutive race at Martinsville for which he will start in the mid-20s.

If this trend holds, Kahne should finish in the low- to mid-20s as well. Kahne has not been particularly strong during his career at Martinsville and should be viewed as a questionable value.
Oct 24 - 10:26 PM

Clay Rogers has attempted to qualify for three races—all on short, flat tracks. He failed to qualify at Richmond and parked after only 45 laps at New Hampshire this September.

Rogers took a provisional to start the Goody's 500 in a third BK Racing entry. This team will probably start-and-park again this week.
Oct 24 - 10:01 PM

Brian Vickers finished 16th this spring in the STP 500 after starting 13th. On Friday, he picked up where he left off and qualified 17th for Sunday’s race.

Vickers’ last four races on this track ended in top-20 finishes, so fantasy owners should expect a result in the same general range this week.
Oct 24 - 9:39 PM

Mie Wallace was forced to take a provisional to start the Goody's 500. He will start last in 43rd.

Wallace’s last start at Martinsville came in 2005 when he was racing for Morgan-McClure. Look for him to be rusty and simply attempt to finish the race.
Oct 24 - 9:25 PM

Kyle Fowler logged 37 laps in Martinsville’s first practice session for the Goody's 500. He posted the slowest single lap and was at the bottom of the grid in terms of 10-lap averages as well, but the most important thing was that he got plenty of seat time.

Only 43 cars are entered this week, so Fowler will start the race with a provisional in 42nd. Look for him to run until the end of the show and finish, but he will not be a very good fantasy value.
Oct 24 - 9:21 PM

Canadian Tire Series regular Alex Guenette has the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in Happy Hour practice for the Camping World Truck Series Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway.

The average speed of 92.207 mph in the No. 32 Chevrolet Silverado was best of the six trucks that ran 10 consecutive laps on the track for this session. No. 15 Mason Mingus (91.514 mph), No. 08 Camden Murphy (89.135), No. 07 Enrique Contreras III (87.682), No. 82 Cody Erickson (87.172) and No. 93 Dustin Hapka (86.511) are the rest on this list.
Oct 24 - 8:21 PM

Darrell Wallace Jr. is fastest in Happy Hour for the Camping World Truck Series Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway.

At 95.888 mph in the No. 34 Wendell Scott Hall of Fame tribute Toyota Tundra, he was the fastest of the 37 trucks out on the track for the final practice. No. 88 Matt Crafton, No. 51 Erik Jones, No. 00 Cole Custer and No. 17 Timothy Peters are the rest of the top five on the speed chart. No. 86 Brandon Brown was the slowest. Wallace Jr. switched numbers on the Toyota Tundra from #54 to #34 (Wendell Scott drove the No. 34 during his career) for this race. The No. 54 will return after Martinsville.
Oct 24 - 8:18 PM

Jamie McMurray set a new qualification record and won the pole for Sunday’s Goody's 500 at Martinsville Speedway. His fastest lap was 18.954 seconds, which converts to 99.905 mph.

McMurray had one of the fastest cars this spring before contact with Dale Earnhardt Jr. cut a tire and sent him into the wall. It is safe to say that he has unfinished business and wants to dominate the race. The track record of 100.201 mph was set by Joey Logano this spring during the first session.
Oct 24 - 5:40 PM

Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick were the only two Chase contenders who qualified outside the top 12 for Sunday’s Goody's 500. Gordon missed advancing to the second round of time trials by six inches; Harvick was well off the pace and starts 33rd after scraping the wall twice.

Gordon will suffer with bad pit selection, but Harvick will have to change his strategy and gamble on two tires early. Martinsville is not Harvick’s best track in terms of average finishes and this is not what he wanted to start the Eliminator round.
