For the first time during the Chase, Joey Logano failed to finish in the top five. He crossed under the checkers 11th in the Geico 500.

There were two reasons for his "poor" performance. He sustained crash damage early in the race when he was collected by Jamie McMurray. Even so, he was racing among the top 10 when he may have done a little blocking to insure that his teammate Brad Keselowski had the best opportunity to win. With that 11th-place result, he now has a current top-15 streak of 13 consecutive races.
Oct 20 - 11:35 AM

Casey Mears kept his perfect streak of top-15s on restrictor-plate, superspeedways alive with a 10th-place finish in the Geico 500.

Three of these strong runs were top-10s, which made him one of the best values at his salary cap level in most games. He also has earned five other top-15s. One of these came at Phoenix this spring. He could be a great dark horse in two weeks on that same track.
Oct 20 - 11:20 AM

Kevin Harvick advanced to the Eliminator round of the playoffs by winning the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte, but his ninth-place finish at Talladega was equally impressive. It was the seventh consecutive race this season in which he scored a top-15 finish.

His worst two results were a 13th at Dover and 12th at Kansas and they came in the past four weeks, however. The competition is getting tighter. To advance to the Championship race at Homestead, a driver will almost certainly need to sweep the top 10 at Martinsville, Texas, and Phoenix.
Oct 20 - 10:37 AM

Kasey Kahne raced to a 12th-place finish in the Geico 500, but missed the Chase by three points. He was one of three Hendrick Motorsports drivers who were eliminated in the Contender round along with Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Kahne would actually have needed to finish four positions better than he did in order to displace his teammate Jeff Gordon because the tie-breaker would have been in the No. 24’s favor, but this was one more example of just how close the contests are going to be in the new knockout-style Chase.
Oct 20 - 10:30 AM

Marcos Ambrose finished eighth in the Geico 500. That was his second consecutive plate track top-10 and it came on the heels of a 10th in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona.

Ambrose has occasionally been strong on plate tracks. Four of 45 career Cup top-10s have come at Talladega and Daytona. He might not be done just yet; Ambrose has also scored top-10s at Martinsville, Texas, and Phoenix in his Cup career, which will end at the close of the 2014 season.
Oct 19 - 10:51 PM

Kurt Busch’s name did not get called very often during the Geico 500—and as it turned out that was a good thing. He stayed out of trouble and finished seventh.

Busch has been erratic and occasionally crash prone on plate tracks, so this was a fairly significant accomplishment. It was his first top-10 in the past five races of the season, but his second consecutive top-15. He may be turning his season back around.
Oct 19 - 10:44 PM

Kyle Busch entered the Geico 500 with a 26-point cushion over the elimination bubble and as such was the most likely driver to advance to the Eliminator round on points. He raced conservatively in the back of the pack for most of the race, but was run over from behind on lap 104 when Aric Almirola and JJ Yeley triggered a 10-car accident. Busch finished 40th.

Busch sustained heavy damage, but the team completely remade the car in a mere 45 minutes. Still that was not enough to keep him from falling to ninth in the standings, seven markers behind Jeff Gordon—the last driver to advance based on points.
Oct 19 - 10:36 PM

In only his second start in Joe Falk’s No. 33, Travis Kvapil finished sixth in the Geico 500 after starting seventh.

Restrictor-plate, superspeedway racing is always host to several dark horse top-10s, but that does not detract from how special they are for the driver and their fantasy owners. This was Kvapil’s first top-10 in his last 63 starts. Prior to this weekend, his most recent top-10 was an eighth in the 2012 fall Talladega race.
