Dalton Sargeant had never seen Madison Int'l Speedway before Friday. It didn't matter though when Sargeant, in the No. 77 Big Tine Ford for Cunningham Motorsports, won the General Tire Pole for Friday night's Montgomery Ward 200.

Sargeant circled the half-mile short track in 18.138 seconds, just .045 seconds off the track record set by Alex Bowman in 2012. Venturini Motorsports' Zane Smith, in the No. 55 Icon Vehicle Dynamics-LaPaz Margarita Mix Toyota, qualified second at 18.200 seconds. Current championship points leader Austin Theriault was third in Ken Schrader's No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Toyota.

Kyle Larson posted the fastest single lap in final practice for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway with a speed of 94.389 mph.

Larson is not the first driver one thinks of on road courses, but he does have a fourth at Watkins Glen International in his rookie season. He finished in the top 15 in three consecutive races, so he might be a pleasant surprise.

Noah Gragson (No. 18 Switch Toyota Tundra) won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award for the M&M's 200 at Iowa Speedway with a lap of 136.151 mph.

Chase Briscoe (third) posted his first top-10 start at Iowa Speedway and his sixth in nine races this season. Chase Elliott got loose entering turn 10 and spun into the wall during the final 15 minutes of practice for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. He made hard contact and will have to roll out a backup.

Elliott had climbed to seventh on the leaderboard, so he was starting to get comfortable on the road course. Perhaps he was a little too comfortable. He spun harmlessly in the first practice session.
Jun 23 - 7:50 PM

Erik Jones crashed with an hour remaining in final practice and will have to go to a backup.

This is the first time Jones has been to Sonoma and road course racing is a unique skill. He will improve throughout the weekend, but he is not going to be a good fantasy value.
Jun 23 - 6:58 PM

Denny Hamlin posted the fastest single lap in the first practice session for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway with a speed of 94.068 mph.

Jun 23 - 4:57 PM

Chad Knaus had his laptop stolen from his rental car prior to the Toyota / Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway and reportedly has lost his race notes.
