Player News - Grizzlies

The potential No. 4 pick for the Grizzlies is expected to play "at least 20 minutes a game next season," according to official team reporter Michael Wallace.

This is from a team employee, but Wallace has covered his team very well for years. Memphis has some serious work to do to change their narrative among NBA agents, rookies who didn't work out for them, and fantasy owners after their tank job last season. Additionally, if the Grizzlies do trade the No. 4 pick, they'll be taking on criticism for most of the season.

The Grizzlies struggled to get players in for workouts and getting medical information from certain players, according to Adrian Wojnarowski on his podcast.

The Grizzlies have really looked bad in the last two years and it's reflecting in how agents treat them. Wendell Carter is reportedly among the top prospects, but that's about it for players projected to go into the top five. On the bright side, at least the Grizzlies have hired some strong assistants in Jerry Stackhouse and Nick Van Exel.

The Grizzlies have gauged the trade market on a package of Chandler Parsons and the No. 4 overall pick, according to Michael Scotto of The Athletic.

It's fair to say Parsons has the worst contract in the NBA with $49.2 million going his way over the next two years. The Grizzlies somehow believe they can still win 50 games next year, so maybe a rebuilding team can pick up some draft capital to have Parsons fill up some empty payroll while said team develops their youth. The Grizzlies haven't exactly made wise calls in the last few years, so they certainly could make a hasty decision.

Grizzlies owner Robert Pera thinks that his team can return to being a 50-plus win club if Marc Gasol and Mike Conley can stay healthy next season.

"Assuming Marc and Mike come back healthy, I think we have a couple of surrounding pieces that are younger players that are going to make a positive impact," Pera said. "We’ll get another good player in this draft. I see no reason why we can’t return to being a 50-win plus team." The Grizzlies are coming off a ridiculously injury-plagued season, but their 2017-18 troubles resulted in the club earning the No. 4 overall selection in the upcoming draft. 50-plus wins is a bit of a reach, but a healthy Conley plus an impact rookie could get them back into the post-season conversation.

Keith Smart will join David Fizdale as an assistant with the Knicks, according to Ian Begley of ESPN.

Smart had served as an assistant in Memphis for two years. Per Begley, Smart will be a top assistant on Fizdale's staff.

Free agent forward Brice Johnson attended a three-day mini camp hosted by the Nets.

Despite being in the league for two years, Johnson has only made a total of 21 appearances for the Clippers and Grizzlies. Still only 23, Johnson will have plenty of chances to showcase himself this offseason and we'll likely see him latch on with a team for the Summer League. Some other notable free agents at the camp included Xavier Silas, Josh Gray, Naz Mitrou-Long, Jarrod Uthoff, Semaj Christon, Byron Mullens and Walt Lemon Jr.

Marc Gasol voiced his support of J.B. Bickerstaff as the new head coach.

"J.B. deserves a real shot at this without any restrictions," Gasol said. "He has earned it… He’s always so positive. He always helps me understand, ‘Do your job. Control what you can control and the rest will take care of itself.’ Our communication has been really good. We’re both going in the same direction. And that’s important." Gasol's relationship with former coach David Fizdale soured, but Gasol and Mike Conley both have a strong bond with Bickerstaff. He coached a team that was committed to tanking in 2017-18, but we'll see if he can turn things around in Memphis.

Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said the Grizzlies will make a pitch to Tyreke Evans in free agency.

Grizzlies beat reporter Michael Wallace said that Chris Wallace didn't sound as confident about retaining Evans as he did during the trade deadline, and it's not like it will be easy for them to afford him. If the Grizzlies don't use their mid-level exception worth around $8.6 million, the most they will be able to offer is $3.9 million because they don't have his bird rights.

Nick Calathes plans to rejoin the NBA as a free agent this summer.

He's been terrific in EuroLeague and is an MVP candidate with his Athens team, but Calathes didn't make much of an impact in the NBA back in 2014-15.

J.B. Bickerstaff has agreed to a three-year contract to become the Memphis Grizzlies' head coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com.

This news has been expected all day with word of "framework" of a deal already in place for the 2017-18 interim coach. The Grizzlies continue to have a strange year after they foolishly held Tyreke Evans through the trade deadline, and now they're just going to stay the course after they finished the year as the second worst team in the NBA.
Apr 27 - 12:07 AM

The Grizzlies and interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff are working on a framework of a deal to make him the new head coach according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

Marc Stein of the New York Times reported earlier in the week that this was the expectation, but it's not clear when the deal will be finalized. The Grizzlies had an embarrassing finish to the season, losing 29 of their final 33 games. Now that they tanked their way to a top-5 pick, the Grizzlies will try to bounce back next season with Mike Conley and Marc Gasol leading the charge.
Apr 26 - 10:55 AM

According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the Grizzlies are expected to keep J.B. Bickerstaff as head coach.

"I can just tell you, basically everyone I talk to is operating under the assumption J.B. Bickerstaff is going to be brought back," Stein said. "Ultimately, we'll see until we get an announcement from the team that's the case it's official." There will already be five new coaches around the NBA for 2018-19, but the Grizzlies probably want to give Bickerstaff a fair chance with a healthy Mike Conley and a top-5 pick.
Apr 26 - 10:30 AM

Mike Conley (heel surgery) expects to be a full go for 2018-19.

"Thankfully I had the surgery early enough to where I have a full summer of work and getting my body ready for an 82-game season," Conley said. His ADP should be way down after making it through just 12 games with 17.1 points, 4.1 assists and 2.3 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 2.0 triples on 38.1% shooting. He will be entering the third year of his five-year, $153 million deal, but carries a lot of risk because of his durability and the potential for Memphis to tank again.
Apr 23 - 10:08 AM

Chandler Parsons shared his thoughts on his disappointing 2017-18 season.

"I had moments this year where I felt good and felt like myself, and I had moments where the soreness and stiffness were just too much," Parsons said. "I want to play. I want to be healthy. And I’m doing everything in my power to get there." He averaged 7.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 19.2 minutes, playing in a total of 35 games. Needless to say, the Grizzlies should be relieved that he's halfway through his four-year, $94 million contract.

Dillon Brooks scored a career-high 36 points on Wednesday, going 14-of-22 from the field with three 3-pointers, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Brooks also went 5-of-5 from the line with just two turnovers in 33 minutes of action. He came full-circle with this performance, ending the season with a bang after making his NBA debut with an unexpected 19-point, four-steal gem back on Oct. 18. He's a player to monitor closely throughout the offseason and training camp.
