The Florida Times Union wonders whether Brandon Allen could enter the mix for the Jaguars' starting quarterback job.

A second-year sixth-round pick out of Arkansas, Allen has moved the Jaguars' offense better than Blake Bortles and Chad Henne this preseason, albeit against second- and third-team defenses. While beat writer Ryan O'Halloran considers Allen starting "unlikely because this regime is all about winning Week 1," O'Halloran does acknowledge "stranger things have happened." Allen should play almost the entire game in the Jags' preseason finale.

The Jaguars did not release an unofficial depth chart in their game notes this week.

Instead, they listed question marks at quarterback and kicker. The Jags have lost confidence in Blake Bortles, who delivered an embarrassing performance Thursday night. There's incentive for Jacksonville to sit Bortles as his $19 million option for next year (which the Jaguars foolishly exercised) is only guaranteed for injury. With Chad Henne and Bortles battling it out at QB and Leonard Fournette (foot) injured, Jacksonville's offense looks to be in dire straits.

The Jaguars passed on signing free agent K Dan Carpenter after his workout on Friday.

Jason Myers has missed 3-of-4 field goals this preseason. "I think he’s well aware of the situation he’s in," said coach Doug Marrone. "He has to go out there and perform well and earn the trust of his coaches as well as his teammates." While Myers' job is safe for the time being, he can't afford any more slip-ups.

Jaguars signed RB DuJuan Harris, formerly of the 49ers.

It's the first we've heard of Harris since the Niners let him go shortly after the draft. Harris should see reps at Jaguars camp with Leonard Fournette (foot) and T.J. Yeldon (hamstring) both banged up, though it's unlikely he'll factor into the team's regular season plans. The 28-year-old contributed 253 yards on 46 touches with one touchdown over 10 games for San Francisco last season.
Aug 20 - 9:10 AM

Leonard Fournette (foot) expects to be ready for Week 1.

This is good news for their workhorse back. Foot and ankle injuries clearly hindered Fournette's rushing ability in his last season at LSU, making this injury something to keep an eye on.
Aug 19 - 12:53 PM

Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (ankle) says he expects to be ready for Week 1.

This is a great sign for Lee, who was previously thought to have a high-ankle sprain. He is already out of a walking boot and no longer needs crutches. Lee was by far the most efficient player for the Jaguars on short passes last season and an important part of their offense.
Aug 19 - 12:15 PM

T.J. Yeldon exited the second preseason game with a hamstring injury.

The severity of the injury is not known, but it is another setback for a player who has struggled with injuries throughout his short career and sat out the entire offseason program with an ankle issue. Yeldon's spot as the third-down back is likely secure, but that could change if he is not able to get and stay healthy.
Aug 19 - 10:48 AM

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero confirms Jacksonville's starting quarterback job is "wide open."

It's "not a forgone conclusion" Blake Bortles has lost his job despite a shaky preseason. Coach Doug Marrone refused to commit to Bortles following Thursday's game, but the Jaguars haven't given up on him as their starter. Jacksonville isn't expected to pursue any outside options, leaving Bortles and Chad Henne to compete for the Week 1 job.
Aug 18 - 8:05 PM

Jaguars rookie WR Dede Westbrook caught 6-of-7 targets for 131 yards in Thursday night's second preseason game.

Westbrook played against a bunch of Bucs backups, but he's now had back-to-back strong performances to open the preseason after catching a 42-yard touchdown in the first exhibition. All seven of his catches this summer have gone for at least 20 yards. Westbrook appears to be positioning himself to serve as a deep threat in the No. 4 receiver role as a rookie.
Aug 18 - 12:17 PM

The Florida Times Union's Ryan O'Halloran believes "it would make perfect sense" for the Jaguars to cut Blake Bortles this summer.

1010 XL Jacksonville's Hays Carlyon had a similar suggestion Friday morning. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft, Bortles has melted down this summer, first experiencing a "tired arm" last weekend -- perhaps an excuse by coach Doug Marrone to see more of Chad Henne or not -- and then a rock-bottom preseason effort Thursday night. Bortles missed wide-open big plays, and even his completions were a chore. Bortles' 2017 salary is guaranteed, but the Jaguars can't let Bortles on the field and expose him to injury, which would guarantee his $19 million salary for 2018. Henne is the favorite to start.
Aug 18 - 11:10 AM

The Florida Times Union's Ryan O'Halloran believes Chad Henne will be the Jaguars' Week 1 starter against the Texans.

Jaguars beat writers are having a field day following Blake Bortles' disastrous Thursday night performance. Coach Doug Marrone has been hinting at this for a week, first giving Bortles a day off at practice because of a "tired arm" and then saying before Thursday's exhibition that Henne would work with the first-team offense. Henne moved the offense and should have had a touchdown, but both Keelan Cole and Allen Robinson dropped surefire scores. Bortles' confidence is in the gutter. Henne gives the Jaguars a slightly better chance to win.
Aug 18 - 10:53 AM

Speaking after Thursday's preseason game, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone refused to commit to Blake Bortles at quarterback, and said he's competing with Chad Henne.

"It's this simple: I'm looking for the best person to lead this offense," Marrone began. "It's right up there for grabs, and either person can take it. ... (Bortles has) got to go earn it." Marrone refused to even shut the door on third-stringer Brandon Allen. They're the comments of a desperate man following a fiasco of a performance from Bortles on Thursday. Bortles seems to have regressed instead of progressed on his dismal 2016, showing stunningly awful ball placement while looking like a quarterback lacking for confidence. Henne was scarcely better, but Marrone could probably convince himself Henne is more manageable than Bortles' unwieldy motion.
Aug 17 - 11:30 PM

Chad Henne completed 6-of-10 passes for 44 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game Thursday night.

Henne didn't do anything on the field to distinguish himself, but it's important to note that the Jaguars left their first-team offensive line and receivers in the game when Henne entered late in the first half, and left them in with Henne fairly deep into the second half. The decision to do so suggests the Jaguars are at least considering the possibility they'll have to turn to Henne as a better option than struggling Blake Bortles.
Aug 17 - 10:42 PM

Allen Robinson caught 4-of-8 targets for 34 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game.

Blake Bortles targeted Robinson deep down the left sideline on the Jaguars’ first drive, but the predictably errant pass was uncatchable. Robinson did come down with a wild Bortles pass into heavy traffic for an 11-yard gain and showed his RAC ability on a ten-yard bubble screen, but Bortles missed Robinson twice more on underthrows, bringing out the Jaguars’ boo birds. The good news is Bortles targeted Robinson relentlessly, sending 7-of-13 pass attempts in his direction. Nevertheless, it's a reminder that Robinson's fantasy value is at the mercy of a shot-confidence quarterback.
Aug 17 - 9:37 PM

Blake Bortles completed 8-of-13 passes for 65 yards in the Jaguars' second preseason game.

Bortles didn't commit any turnovers, but he came awfully close on several occasions. He also flat-out missed Allen Robinson on three and arguably four big-play chances, incessantly under- and over-throwing the Jaguars' top receiver when Robinson had created separation down the sidelines and over the middle. Bortles was booed repeatedly by the Jaguars' home crowd. Dealing with shot confidence, we'd bet against Bortles starting 16 games this season.
