Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey (groin) has already progressed to running this week.

Ramsey needed core muscle surgery right after OTAs and minicamp less than two weeks ago. He should be back to 100 percent for training camp. Ramsey, even after a strong rookie season, is a big candidate to take another step forward in Year 2.

Jaguars claimed OL Demetrius Rhaney off waivers from the Rams.

Rhaney can back up at multiple spots on the offensive line, but was limited to special teams last year. He'll give Jacksonville some end-of-the roster depth going into training camp.

Rams waived C/G Demetrius Rhaney.

A seventh-round pick in 2014, Rhaney saw some spot action two seasons ago, but he was primarily a special teams contributor. Getting cut at this point in the offseason is not a great sign, but perhaps Rhaney latches on with another team before camp.

Jaguars DC Todd Wash said 2015 No. 3 overall pick Dante Fowler "has matured a lot."

"He is more focused on the little details," Wash said. "You just see a young man mature, which is really good to see because he is a good football player." Fowler was whistled for eight penalties last season including three offsides in just 570 snaps. He will need to be more disciplined moving forward to reach his potential, but it sounds like he is on the right track.

Jaguars signed third round DE Dawuane Smoot to a four-year contract.

The Jaguars have signed their entire draft class. Smoot got subpackage reps inside at OTAs, but projects to back up Calais Campbell as a rookie.

Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey underwent surgery to repair a core muscle injury on Thursday.

The injury must have occurred at minicamp. Ramsey will need about six weeks to recover. Assuming that timetable holds, Ramsey should resurface in late July or early August, which is right around the time training camp starts. The 22-year-old was as good as advertised last year, earning PFF's No. 19 cornerback grade as a rookie. He'll be ready in plenty of time for Week 1.
Jun 16 - 1:30 PM

Jaguars DC Todd Wash plans to match up CBs Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye based on opposing receivers' body type and style.

The Jaguars had Ramsey (6'1/209) shadow the opponent's top receiver as a rookie. However, Bouye is smaller (6'0/186) and might be asked to cover the opponent's top receiver if that receiver is also smaller. According to PFF, Bouye was the sixth best corner in pass coverage out of 119 qualifiers, and Ramsey was 18th. The Jaguars have one of the best CB duos in the NFL.

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell guaranteed Blake Bortles will have fewer pass attempts this season.

Bortles was third in the league with 625 attempts last year. The Jags made it clear they plan to run a more balanced attack by selecting Leonard Fournette with the No. 4 overall pick, and coach Doug Marrone only half-jokingly said "zero" was the ideal number of attempts for Bortles each game when asked about it last week. It would not be surprising if Bortles threw the ball over 100 fewer times this season even if he holds onto the job all year.

Jaguars fourth-round WR Dede Westbrook returned to practice Wednesday.

Westbrook sat out most of OTAs and the first minicamp practice with an undisclosed injury. He was only able to get in individual drills on Wednesday, but the work puts him on track to be a full-go for training camp. Westbrook faces a steep climb up the depth chart in Jacksonville.
Jun 15 - 11:20 AM

Blake Bortles will work with QB guru Tom House this summer.

Bortles also spent time with House early this spring. He'll continue to work on his throwing motion and a quicker release, which played a big role in Bortles' 2016 struggles. Jaguars EVP Tom Coughlin and coach Doug Marrone both believe Bortles has improved his mechanics.

Jaguars LT Branden Albert said he's moving on from his contract dispute, and admits he overplayed his hand.

"No," Albert replied when asked if he's underpaid. "At the time, when you see the situation and (how) the market came out, you try and do what’s best business-wise. It didn’t work that way and it’s time to move on." Albert ran with the third-stringers on the opening day of minicamp, but even with second-rounder Cam Robinson in the fold, Albert should be on the blindside come Week 1.
Jun 13 - 5:43 PM

Jaguars fourth-round WR Dede Westbrook did not practice Tuesday with an undisclosed injury.

Westbrook missed the final eight practices of OTAs with the injury, and it looks like he will miss the three minicamp practices as well. Already buried in a crowded depth chart, the missed time will not help Westbrook earn a meaningful rookie role. He should be considered questionable for training camp.

Jaguars LT Branden Albert said he will attend training camp.

Albert sat out the voluntary portions of the offseason program in hopes of landing a new deal from his new team, but he reported for minicamp on Monday and says he has put the contract situation behind him. Second-rounder Cam Robinson will provide competition, but Albert should win the left tackle job in camp.
Jun 13 - 11:37 AM

Jaguars LT Branden Albert officially reported for mandatory minicamp on Monday.

The practices run Tuesday-Thursday. Albert has remained away from the team since being acquired from the Dolphins in late February. He was believed to be seeking a contract adjustment, one that does not appear to be coming. Even with second-rounder Cam Robinson in the fold, Albert should man the blindside in 2017.

First Coast News' Mike Kaye thinks T.J. Yeldon could be a surprise cut.

Kaye thinks Chris Ivory will be first-rounder Leonard Fournette's "running mate" early on before Fournette takes over the three-down role, leaving Yeldon only "a handful of snaps on offense per game." We are not so sure. Effective out of the backfield, Yeldon is a much better complement to Fournette's skill set than Ivory, and he costs much less the next two years. Either way, Fournette is the only Jags back worth owning in standard re-draft leagues.
