What has the Edge left behind?
by Gregg Rosenthal

A lot of questions came through the Season Pass Chat today about Justin Forsett. Of course, this was prompted by the team’s release of Edgerrin James earlier this week.

Blind logic would suggest that Forsett will assume the No. 2 role behind Julius Jones and immediately have fantasy value. I’m not so sure.

Some facts on Forsett, a seventh-round pick out of Cal in 2008:
* He is 5-foot-8 and 194 pounds. Also known as half the size of Brandon Jacobs.
* As a rookie, he was waived and signed to practice squads throughout the season. That’s never a good sign.
* The Seahawks didn’t trust Forsett to be their No. 2 back earlier in the season, signing two washed up backs in T.J. Duckett and Edge.

The point is, I’m not sure the Seahawks see Forsett as more than a strict third-down back. He can clearly excel in that role, will get a few more touches going forward and have some deeeeep PPR value, but look for Louis Rankin to fill Edgerrin’s old role. Yes, we’re talking about that big 5-7 carry per game role.

Rankin is a nice fit for the zone blocking scheme of the Seahawks and he may have more of a chance to eventually have fantasy value down the line.

Of course, with the Seahawks’ offensive line playing the way it is, none of their backs have much of a chance. Regardless, we’ll get a good look on Sunday as the hapless Lions are in town, meaning plenty of opportunities for the Seahawks to run the ball.

D. Pressley - DL - NO
Saints signed DT DeMario Pressley off their practice squad.
Kendrick Clancy was placed on injured reserve Saturday, ending his season. Pressley was a fifth-round pick in 2008 will be getting his first big chance after breaking his foot in his rookie training camp. | 11/7/2009 5:27:00 PM

Kendrick Clancy - DL - NO
Saints placed NT Kendrick Clancy (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.
It's a pretty big loss for the Saints. Without Clancy, they were gashed by Michael Turner for 151 yards last Monday night. Anthony Hargrove should see more snaps with Clancy done. Clancy is a free agent after this season. | 11/7/2009 5:22:00 PM

Bobby Engram - WR - KC
Chiefs released WR Bobby Engram.
The Chiefs are desperate for someone to emerge opposite Dwayne Bowe and Engram was clearly not the answer. Engram had five catches on the season and at age 36, he has to be thinking he may be near the end of the line. | 11/7/2009 5:18:00 PM

Kolby Smith - RB - KC
Chiefs activated Kolby Smith (knee) from the PUP list.
No surprise here. With Larry Johnson suspended, Smith will play behind Jamaal Charles and could see significant carries. Still, Smith was never that fast and is coming off major knee surgery, so we're not expecting much. | 11/7/2009 5:16:00 PM

Steve Slaton - RB - HOU
Steve Slaton will come off the bench for the Texans Sunday against the Colts.
Owners should hardly give up on Slaton because of the news. He should still get the ball plenty Sunday, although he's not a recommended flex option this week. It would surprise us if Slaton doesn't regain the starting job this season and still provide some big fantasy weeks. | 11/7/2009 5:05:00 PM

Ryan Moats - RB - HOU
Ryan Moats will start at running back for the Texans Sunday, according to ESPN's Bob Holzman.
Holzman got the news from Texans coach Gary Kubiak, and relayed it to Adam Schefter. The news isn't a shock, but certainly helps Moats' fantasy value in a decent matchup against the Colts. Steve Slaton and Chris Brown will both likely be heavily involved, so Moats is a good, not great, flex option. | 11/7/2009 5:02:00 PM
