Renfroe Boosts His Trade Value
Hunter Renfroe went 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBI to guide the Padres to a 16-12 victory over the Rockies in extra-innings on Friday. He ripped a solo shot off starter Jeff Hoffman in the second inning to get the trifecta started. He then smacked a two-run homer as the Padres scored six runs in the ninth inning to tie the game and send it to extras. He clubbed another two-run shot as the Padres scored five times in the 12th inning. The trio of taters gives Renfroe 21 longballs and 40 RBI on the season to go with a power-centric .253/.300/.631 slash line in 63 games. He hit 26 home runs in each of the last two seasons and could easily reach that mark before the All Star break this year. He is on pace to hit 48 home runs. Only one player in Padres history has hit more than 41 home runs (Greg Vaughn hit 50 in 1998).
Renfroe's name was bandied about in trade rumors earlier in the day on Friday. The Padres are falling out of contention. They are 13 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West but are only 4.5 games behind the second Wild Card slot. If or when the playoffs look like a longshot the Padres may start dealing off some of their assets whom they don't view as key to their long-term competitive cycle. They have a crowded outfield situation with Renfroe, Wil Myers, Franmil Reyes and Manuel Margot along with a strong farm system. Renfroe may have the most trade value of that bunch. If he can be such a productive power hitter in San Diego, which is a tough ballpark in which to hit home runs, just imagine how he would fare in most of the other ballparks around the league. His outburst on Friday night immediately after his availability on the trade market was announced could not have been better timed.
If he does get traded out of San Diego it could do wonders for his fantasy value for two reasons. The first is that he could end up in a better hitters' park. The second is that he would probably get more at-bats with his new team. He has garnered just 198 at-bats so far this season, which is about 100 fewer at-bats than the league leaders. If he gets traded to a contender he will probably get to play a full game every day rather than sharing time like he is now. He is under team control through 2023, so he wouldn't be a rental for his new team. The Padres' farm system is already loaded and could get a big infusion of fresh talent if Renfroe gets moved.
24 Hour Cycle
Jake Bauers hit for the cycle against the Tigers on Friday. He doubled in the second inning, singled and tripled in the fourth inning and finished off the cycle by drilling a two-run homer in the eighth. Bauers went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs in the ballgame. It was the second day in a row that a player hit for the cycle, following Shohei Ohtani's feat on Thursday. Jorge Polanco hit for the cycle earlier this season. Historically cycles are as rare as no-hitters, but in recent years no-hitters are becoming rarer while cycles are becoming more frequent. There have been 289 individual no-hitters thrown since 1875, plus 12 combined no-hitters. There have been 327 cycles in major league history.
Despite the great game, Bauers is still slashing a paltry .222/.305/.384 with eight homers and 26 RBI through 64 games in his first season with the Indians. The 23-year-old outfielder has yet to put everything together in the majors. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of his development from a fantasy perspective is the lack of stolen bases. He has swiped just two bags in four attempts this year. He stole 16 bases between the majors and minors last year and snared 20 bags in 2017. He still has a chance to evolve into a power hitter with wheels and last night's display was a good reminder of just how talented he is.

Rookie Sensation Does It Again
Yordan Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to power the Astros to a 15-2 blowout win over the Blue Jays. He cracked a two-run shot off reliever Sam Gaviglio in the fourth inning -- his third home run since getting promoted last weekend. According to Statcast data, all three batted balls had an exit velocity of at least 108 mph. Alvarez has five hits in 13 at-bats and has also walked six times in his four games since being promoted to the majors. The big outfielder will turn 22 years old later this month. He was leading the minor leagues with 23 home runs in 56 games.
J.D. Martinez blasted a pair of home runs and drove in three runs on Friday as the Red Sox routed the Orioles 13-2 in Baltimore. Both bombs came against Dan Straily -- a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo dong in the fifth. Straily gave up seven runs and four homers in 1 1/3 innings. The Red Sox whacked six home runs in total. The Orioles have surrendered a league-leading 138 home runs already this year and are on pace to obliterate the all-time record. Martinez is slashing .306/.384/.566 with 15 home runs and 38 RBI in 61 games. Those are elite numbers but his power is actually down a little bit compared to his last two seasons. His ISO over the past three years was .387 in 2017, .299 in 2018 and is sitting at .260 this year.
