FanDuel Bargain Bin: Sunday

Today, we dive into the 3-4 spots of several pitching rotations, meaning there’s plenty of matchups to exploit from a hitting perspective. In fact, it would be a disservice to single one out as a stack, so I decided to compile a list of splits to target.

The following numbers are a heavy sample size of the past three seasons (unless noted otherwise):

Baltimore RHB vs Rodon (.375 wOBA vs RHB, 36 innings)

Colorado LHB vs Rubby De La Rosa (.372 wOBA vs LHB)

Tampa RHB vs Sabathia (.371 wOBA vs RHB)

LA Angels LHB vs Lewis (.358 wOBA vs LHB)

You could make a pretty healthy FanDuel lineup by mixing and matching players in those situations.

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

Kole Calhoun – OF – LAA (FanDuel Price: $2,500)

Calhoun has the best combination of salary, security, and upside of anyone in today’s slate.  The park shift in Texas has been very kind to him over the first two games, going 4-9 with 2 doubles, 1 HR, 6 RBI’s. He has a great matchup against Colby Lewis, who owns a .358 wOBA split vs LHB. Lock him in.

Matt Carpenter – 3B – STL (FanDuel Price: $3,200)

Any time you can snag Carpenter for a bargain salary, you seriously need to consider investing. The Cardinal third baseman hit somewhat of a cold-stretch, but he’s coming around with 4 hits over the past three games. In addition, Padres pitcher Ian Kennedy has a susceptible .336 wOBA split to lefties. Carpenter and teammate Kolton Wong make a good 1-2 punch today.

Joey Butler – OF – TB (FanDuel Price: $2,900)

Butler has proven himself as a well-rounded player: he can pile up base hits, belt a deep ball, and swipe a bag or two. These are the players you feel good about targeting on a consistent basis. That especially holds true in Butler’s situation today, enjoying a nice park shift at Yankee Stadium against C.C. Sabathia (.371 wOBA vs RHB, 1.64 HR/9)

Also Consider: Kolton Wong – 2B - STL

VIABLE PUNTS

Dioner Navarro – C – TOR (FanDuel Price: $2,300)

First, you’ll need to check if Navarro is in the lineup, as he doesn’t always start. However, in the event that he’s starting, he’ll likely bat 4th or 5th for one of the highest projected scoring teams of the day. Justin Verlander is no longer a pitcher to fear, and Navarro has a ton of lineup security within the league’s most productive offense.

Erick Aybar – SS – LAA (FanDuel Price: $2,700)

Using the same rationale as our top pick, Kole Calhoun, LAA shortstop Erick Aybar deserves a look as well. He, like Calhoun, has been unbelievable in this series, going 8-9 (!) with 3 RBI’s and 5 runs scored. His price has jump a little because of it, but Aybar still makes for a comfortable value play in a nice spot.

Nolan Reimold – OF – BAL (FanDuel Price: $2,200)

The Orioles disappointed in a righty/lefty matchup against John Danks on Friday, but I wouldn’t count them out just yet. They have another favorable draw vs a subpar southpaw in Carlos Rodon (.375 wOBA vs RHB). Reimold is the cheapest way to get exposure to the Baltimore bats, getting another uptick if he’s batting 2nd in the lineup – as he sometimes does against lefties.

Also Consider: Danny Espinosa – 2B - WAS

TOURNAMENT GAMBLES

Adam Jones – OF – BAL (FanDuel Price: $3,000)

It was just mentioned in the Reimold write-up, and earlier in the introduction: Baltimore RHB vs Rodon is a fantasy friendly matchup to be aware of. Unfortunately, Adam Jones isn’t hitting the ball right now, and one has to wonder if his injuries are lingering. Therein lies the risk/reward proposition – but there’s a great matchup to exploit here.

Steven Souza – OF – TB (FanDuel Price: $2,600)

Souza is the true definition of a “boom or bust” play. He’s going to smack a homerun or record for outs; there isn’t much of an in-between. However, his prospects of recording a round-tripper are better than usual today, enjoying a park shift in Yankee Stadium against the generous C.C. Sabathia (1.64 HR/9 vs RHB).

Carlos Gonzalez – OF – COL (FanDuel Price: $3,100)

With CarGo, we essentially have the same dilemma outlined with Adam Jones: good player, cheap, slumping, but in a good matchup. The Rockies take on Rubby De La Rosa today, and he owns a generous .372 wOBA split vs left-handed bats. Most people will be afraid of Gonzalez’s recent history (2 hits total in past 5 games), but this could be a bounce-back outing for a cheap price point.

Also Consider: Adam Eaton – OF - CWS
