FanDuel Bargain Bin: Sunday

There are 15 days of baseball left in the season. Your window for DFS success is fast closing. FanDuel’s main contest includes all 15 games today. Due to when lineups are posted, you might have to play the later games blind.

We have a wide range of aces at our disposal. Felix Hernandez, Stephen Strasburg, Jon Lester, Matt Harvey, and Gerrit Cole are the cream of the crop. They all cost over $9,600. There are plenty of other viable picks like Carlos Martinez, Jake Odorizzi, and Julio Teheran.

Speaking of Teheran, he’s opposed by bargain pitcher Aaron Nola. Yesterday I recommended Phillies righty Jerad Eickhoff, pegging him for 10 to 12 points with a ceiling of 17. He scored 12 and would have recorded 16 if the bullpen didn’t blow a lead. I have the same expectation of Nola. A 10 to 12 point day should be within reach. He may even have a 20 point ceiling. The downside is that he’s opposed by Teheran. He owns the Phillies.

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

Jason Kipnis – 2B – CLE (FanDuel Price: $2,900)

Kipnis has some trouble with left-handed pitchers (.674 OPS). White Sox starter John Danks handles fellow lefties just fine (.682 OPS). On the surface, this isn’t a great pairing. If you pick Kipnis, you’re betting Danks only makes it through the order a couple times. Once the Indians are into the soft underbelly of the Chicago bullpen, Kipnis will have better matchups. They do have a couple tough lefty specialists, so a close game could leave Kipnis with a handful of difficult at bats.

Adrian Beltre – 3B – TEX (FanDuel Price: $3,200)

It’s suboptimal to only roster hot players, but it is reassuring to see steamy streaks. Beltre is rocking the world with a .531/.595/.875 line over his last eight games. It’s just in time to propel the Rangers to the top of the division. Beltre is one of those guys who can become unstoppable for extended periods of time. Unfortunately, his matchup with King Felix is rough.

Todd Frazier – 3B – CIN (FanDuel Price: $2,800)

If something was wrong with Frazier, it’s fixed. The slugger went on an extended power slump from late July through early September. Over the last 10 days, he’s popped five home runs, two doubles, and slashed .278/.386/.750. Brewers starter Ariel Pena has struggled with command in two major league starts. He’s due for a drubbing.

Also Consider: Russell Martin – C – TOR … Corey Seager – SS – LAD … George Springer – OF – HOU

VIABLE PUNTS

Victor Martinez – C – DET (FanDuel Price: $2,200)

After a career season in 2014, injuries have ruined Martinez current campaign. The result is a minimum price despite hitting in the heart of a powerful lineup. Martinez is showing some signs of late-season life with a .342/.372/.474 slash over his last 10 games. While I don’t like to put too much stress on recent performance, we do know Martinez is much better than his overall numbers.

Eric Hosmer – 1B – KAN (FanDuel Price: $2,600)

Hosmer turned out to be a good pick yesterday despite facing a lefty. Today, he’ll see homer prone righty Alfredo Simon. Hosmer is better when he has the platoon advantage. Simon has been slain by left-handed hitters - .281/.353/.504 and 14 of the 21 home runs he’s allowed.

Mike Aviles – SS – CLE (FanDuel Price: $2,500)

While Danks pitches well against lefties, righties have banged him around with a .285/.341/.474 line. Aviles hasn’t been particularly good this season, but that’s due to some nagging injuries. He’s supposedly recovered from those injuries. His 1.145 OPS this month supports that assertion. He’s been batting second against left-handed pitchers.

Also Consider: John Jaso – C – TBR … Neil Walker – 2B – PIT … Mike Moustakas – 3B – KAN

TOURNAMENT GAMBLES

Jedd Gyorko – 2B – SDP (FanDuel Price: $2,600)

Gyorko’s visit to Colorado continues. He remains one of the only bargains at the park. He popped a double and a home run yesterday. Today he’s opposed by terrible ground ball pitcher Kyle Kendrick. If you recall from yesterday’s recommendation, Gyorko has a .731 OPS against worm burners. He won’t have the platoon advantage, but that’s not too concerning against Kendrick.

Josh Reddick – OF – OAK (FanDuel Price: $2,800)

Reddick has been a frequent guest of this column. Terrible numbers against left-handed pitching have held down his price tag, but he still whomps righties. This year, he’s slashing .294/.350/.489 against northpaws. That’s $3,800 production at a $1,000 discount. Of course, you’ll have to watch out for late-game situational matchups. He’s opposed by Collin McHugh.

Alex Gordon – OF – KAN (FanDuel Price: $2,700)

Gordon has been somewhat inconsistent since returning from the disabled list, but he’s still offered plenty of output. He’s now batting leadoff for the Royals and should easily get five plate appearances against Simon and the Tigers awful relief corps. He’s 0-for-18 over his last four games, but the proceeding game included a 4-for-5 performance with a home run.

Also Consider: Pedro Alvarez – 1B – PIT … Jed Lowrie – 3B – HOU … Brandon Crawford – SS – SFG
