After a quiet Wednesday night of hockey, we kick off New Year’s Eve with nine games of NHL action. It should be a very interesting night, as we don’t have any huge favorites and most of the better offensive teams are on the road. We also have yet another evening with several teams (Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals) playing their second game in as many nights.
Make sure to check the RotoGrinders NHL Starting Goalies Page to confirm that the goalies listed below are starting prior to game time.
Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets, $6,600 – On a night with no real standout in net, I plan to get some salary relief with my goaltender. Hellebuyck has been superb in goal for the Winnipeg Jets this season, posting a 2.01 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. The Jets’ rookie tender is extremely inexpensive and he should easily come away with the win tonight. Dollar for dollar, he is my top goalie this evening.
Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars, $9,100 - I am not looking to pick on the Nashville Predators, but they have struggled away from home and Seguin is matchup proof. Thanks in large part to Seguin and the Stars’ top line, Dallas leads the league in goals per game this season. Seguin is as safe as they come in cash games.
Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks, $9,400 - Kane had another huge game (1 G, 3 PTS) Tuesday night against the Arizona Coyotes and now he will face the National Hockey League’s worst team in terms of possession. Because of their lack of puck skills, the Colorado Avalanche sit in the bottom third of the league in scoring chances against and high danger scoring chances allowed. The Chicago Blackhawks are one of hockey’s top Corsi teams and they should dominate this hockey game. Look for another multi-point night from the NHL’s scoring leader.
Blake Wheeler, Winnipeg Jets, $6,900 - The Arizona Coyotes have had a rough month of December, allowing by far the most goals against per game (3.92). They are currently tied with the Calgary Flames for most against allowed per game on the season. This can be mostly attributed to their lousy goaltending and 22nd-ranked penalty kill. The Winnipeg Jets have been very inconsistent this year and they have not traveled well, but I think we can ignore those facts in this game. The matchup for Winnipeg is just too good to pass up. Look for Wheeler and the Jets’ top line to have a multi-goal game.
Tyler Toffoli, Los Angeles Kings, $5,800 - Toffoli has been on fire in his last four games, producing six goals and 15 shots on net. The 23-year-old Toronto native has looked tremendous playing on the Kings’ top line and I love his upside again tonight. The Calgary Flames have been a much better team in December, but they still struggle in their own end, especially in goal. Los Angeles is the best possession team in hockey and you can bet Toffoli will have plenty of scoring opportunities in this game.
Dustin Byfuglien, Winnipeg Jets, $7,700 - If I am paying up on defense this evening, Byfuglien is my guy. The Arizona Coyotes will not be able to control the big man and he should be all over the ice in this game. The Desert Dogs have been a defensive disaster in December, leading to a 27th-ranked penalty kill. Look for Byfuglien to break through with the man advantage at the very least.
