As is the case with every NHL Fades, we are going to look at some players who you should think twice about placing in your lineup or who you should avoid using entirely. Remember to check back on this page later in the day for confirmations on starting goalies and keep an eye on Rotoworld’s daily blurbs for all your fantasy hockey needs.
Keep in mind that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 4W, 2D, 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UT).

Patrice Bergeron (BOS) - C - $8,100 (FanDuel), $7,600 (DraftKings)
This is a difficult fade because of how impressive Bergeron’s numbers have been for the last couple of months, especially in January, but he has been dealing with an illness and Brad Marchand has been suspended. Bergeron missed Wednesday’s practice because he was feeling under the weather, but coach Bruce Cassidy believes he will play against Ottawa. He has two goals and no assists in his last six outings against the Senators, including one marker in two matches this season. He is the most expensive pivot on DraftKings and he is pricey on FanDuel as well. You shouldn’t have a problem finding a better option who has far less question marks.
Sean Monahan (CGY) - C - $7,300 (FanDuel), $6,600 (DraftKings)
Monahan had one goal and eight shots on Wednesday after he didn’t earn a point in his previous two contests following a six-game point streak. He appeared to be cooling off before his performance against Los Angeles. Still, it’s hard to trust an offense that has scored one goal in three straight games. Monahan also hasn’t enjoyed any success on the scoresheet against Edmonton this campaign. He does not have a point in two outings versus the Oilers in 2017-18.
Jonathan Drouin (MTL) - C - $5,600 (FanDuel), $4,800 (DraftKings)
Drouin notched one goal and two assists on Tuesday in a 4-2 win over Colorado, but a repeat performance probably isn’t likely. He hasn’t earned two straight multi-point performances since October and he has two goals in his last 18 games. Drouin also has just one goal and one assist in five career meetings against Carolina. He didn’t have a point versus the Hurricanes in a 3-1 loss back on Dec. 27.
Anders Lee (NYI) - W - $6,600 (FanDuel), $6,200 (DraftKings)
Lee has netted three goals in the last 11 games and he has no assists during that span. He has also been held to one shot on net four times in his past five outings and he hasn’t earned a power-play point since Dec. 23. Vegas has also been stingy and they have been incredible at home, so the Islanders could face some trouble breaking through on Thursday night.
Mike Hoffman (OTT) - W - $6,200 (FanDuel), $5,200 (DraftKings)
Hoffman has two goals in seven games and he has been held off the scoresheet 13 times over the last 17 contests. He has one power-play point in 14 outings and hasn’t produced a point in two tilts versus Boston this year. Perhaps the trade rumors are getting to Hoffman. Either way, it’s hard to recommend him at this time.
Brandon Saad (CHI) - W - $6,000 (FanDuel), $5,400 (DraftKings)
Saad hasn’t recorded a point in seven straight games. He has been getting his chances, but his recent slump doesn’t inspire confidence going into the second half of a back-to-back set for the Blackhawks. Saad and Chicago were also blanked 4-0 by Detroit on Jan. 14.
Brendan Gallagher (MTL) - W - $6,100 (FanDuel), $5,000 (DraftKings)
This is more of a fade for FanDuel, where Gallagher is a bit overpriced. He ended a five-game goalless skid on Tuesday and he has scored two goals in his last 10 matches. Gallagher also has just two assists in his past six meetings versus Carolina.
Zach Werenski (CBJ) - D - $5,200 (FanDuel), $5,900 (DraftKings)
Werenski’s price has been on the decline on FanDuel, but he’s still fairly expensive on DraftKings. He has chipped in two assists in nine games. Werenski hasn’t been very productive since he returned from an undisclosed injury at the end of December. He has one goal in three career matches versus Arizona, but he didn’t hit the scoresheet in a 1-0 win over the Coyotes on Dec. 9.
Cam Fowler (ANA) - D - $5,300 (FanDuel), $4,800 (DraftKings)
Fowler registered a pair of power-play assists on Tuesday night, but he only had two helpers in his previous eight outings going into that contest. Look for him to take a step back against Winnipeg on Thursday night. Fowler has one goal and four points in 13 career games versus the Jets. He also didn’t have a point in a 4-1 loss to Winnipeg back on Nov. 24.
Mike Smith (CGY) - G - $8,600 (FanDuel), $8,200 (DraftKings)
Smith hasn’t been confirmed as Thursday night’s starter yet, but if he gets the nod it will be his second game in two nights and it would probably be a difficult matchup. Edmonton will be steamed after a 5-0 loss to Buffalo on Tuesday and they have already defeated the Flames twice this season. Smith was chased from the crease in his last start against the Oilers when he allowed five goals on 27 shots in two periods of work, but he didn’t receive the loss that night. He has posted a 0-1-0 record with a .901 save percentage and a 4.24 goals-against average in two appearances versus Edmonton in 2017-18.
UPDATE: David Rittich will start against Edmonton
