NHL Plays: Wednesday

by Corey Abbott
Updated On: January 13, 2021, 1:27 pm ET

NHL Plays will highlight the best and the most underrated daily fantasy options among forwards, defensemen and goaltenders.

Please note, these players were chosen early in the day, so make sure to check Rotoworld’s player news for any lineup changes, injuries and potential changes in the crease for starting goaltenders.

Additionally, it is worth reminding everyone that FanDuel allows you to roster nine players (2C, 2W, 2D, 2UTIL 1G) with a salary cap of $55,000, while DraftKings has a cap of $50,000 for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 1G, 1UTIL) and Yahoo has a $200 budget for nine players (2C, 3W, 2D, 2G).

Don’t forget, for everything NHL, check out Rotoworld's Player News, and follow @Rotoworld_ HK and @CoreAbbott on Twitter.

Wednesday night has five games on the slate, including an early start of 5:30 p.m. ET for the Pittsburgh at Philadelphia matchup. That game is not being included in contests for Yahoo.

Forwards:

Auston Matthews (Toronto) - C - $8,400 (FanDuel), $8,200 (DraftKings), $35 (Yahoo)

Matthews scored 11 times in 14 games to start the 2019-20 season and has nine goals in his previous four career season openers. The Leafs center also has 12 markers and 17 points in 14 career matches versus Montreal. Matthews is projected to open the year on a line with Mitch Marner and Joe Thornton.

Brayden Point (Tampa Bay) - C - $7,900 (FanDuel), $7,000 (DraftKings), $30 (Yahoo)

Point was an offensive force during the postseason and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he picked up right where he left off during the 2020-21 season. He won’t have Nikita Kucherov on his wing due to an injury, but Steven Stamkos is slated to fill in on Tampa Bay’s top line. Chicago still could have plenty of issues defensively and Point provided two goals and one assist in two outings versus the Blackhawks last year.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (Edmonton) - W - $7,300 (FanDuel), $6,900 (DraftKings), $29 (Yahoo)

Nugent-Hopkins racked up 22 goals and 61 points in 65 appearances last season. He played well alongside Leon Draisaitl and he is slated to start the 2020-21 campaign on a line with Connor McDavid. Nugent-Hopkins is also projected to get playing time on the top power-play unit.

Bargain Bin: Mike Hoffman (STL) - W - $6,000 (FanDuel)/$3,200 (DraftKings)/$21 (Yahoo), Andre Burakovsky (COL) - W - $ 5,500 (FanDuel)/$4,800 (DraftKings)/$19 (Yahoo), Nazem Kadri (COL) - C - $6,400 (FanDuel)/$4,900 (DraftKings)/$24 (Yahoo), Kailer Yamamoto (EDM) - W - $4,800 (FanDuel)/$3,900 (DraftKings)/$17 (Yahoo)

Defenseman:

Cale Makar (Colorado) - $6,100 (FanDuel), $6,000 (DraftKings), $23 (Yahoo)

Makar accounted for 12 goals and 50 points in 57 games during his rookie season en route to capturing the Calder Trophy. He has an incredibly high ceiling going into his second NHL campaign on the high-octane Avalanche. Makar has a new defense partner in Devon Toews and he is expected to quarterback the team’s top power-play unit.

Quinn Hughes (Vancouver) - $5,500 (FanDuel), $5,100 (DraftKings), $19 (Yahoo)

Hughes has plenty of bang for the buck upside on opening day in the NHL. The 21-year-old blueliner amassed 53 points (eight goals, 45 assists) in 68 games during his rookie season in 2019-20. Hughes is expected to keeping rolling, while logging heavy minutes for the Canucks and seeing time on the top power-play combination. Additionally, he supplied one goal and three helpers in four contests against Edmonton last season.

Bargain Bin: Tyson Barrie (EDM) - $5,300 (FanDuel)/$4,400 (DraftKings)/$14 (Yahoo), Alexander Edler (VAN) $4,300 (FanDuel)/$5,800 (DraftKings)/$19 (Yahoo), Torey Krug (STL) - $5,200 (FanDuel)/$5,200 (DraftKings)/$19 (Yahoo)

Goaltenders:

Frederik Andersen (Toronto) - $8,200 (FanDuel), $8,100 (DraftKings), $33 (Yahoo)

Andersen is looking for a bounce-back performance in 2020-21 in what will be a contract year for him. He has performed very well against Montreal during his career, while sporting a 7-3-2 record with a 2.57 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. Andersen didn't get an opportunity to play against the Canadiens last season.

Bargain Bin: Thatcher Demko (VAN) - $7,300 (FanDuel)/$6,900 (DraftKings)/$27 (Yahoo)
